3 Dedication Michael J. Flynn The Proceedings of the 16th Symposium on Computer Arithmetic are dedicated to Michael J. Flynn in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field. Michael J. Flynn received a BS from Manhattan College, MS from Syracuse University and PhD from Purdue University. He was awarded an honorary DSc from University of Dublin (Trinity Col). He began his engineering career at IBM as a designer of mainframe computers such as the IBM 7090 and later as design manager for the IBM System 360 Model 90 series computers. These processors were IBM's highest performing scientific processors. The Model 90 series incorporated many new (1967) ideas such as data flow out-of-order instruction execution, speculative execution and advanced arithmetic algorithms (fast tree multiplier and binomial series divide). After leaving IBM he joined the EE faculty at Northwestern University in 1966 and moved to Johns Hopkins University in During this time he introduced the now familiar stream outline of computer organization (SIMD, etc.). In 1970 he coauthored the first published discussion of techniques for issuing multiple instructions in a cycle, now called superscalar design. He became Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford in 1975 where he set up the Stanford Emulation Lab. to understand the role and affect of instruction set tradeoffs and the efficient design of microprocessors. He retired from Stanford as Emeritus Professor in Early on Mike realized the importance of computer architecture in the development of modern hardware. In the early 1970 s he founded both of the specialist organization on Computer Architecture: the IEEE Computer Society's Technical Committee on Computer Architecture and the ACM's SIGARCH. He has had a special interest in computer arithmetic and in 1981 co-authored one of the standard computer arithmetic texts. During the 90s he headed up an interdisciplinary program on sub-nanosecond arithmetic (SNAP). He has authored or co-authored 5 books, over 300 professional papers and holds two patents. He served as Vice President of the IEEE Computer Society and Associate Editor of the Transactions on Computers. He is a fellow of both the IEEE and the ACM and a fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. He received the ACM/IEEE Eckert-Mauchly Award, the IEEE Computer Society's Harry Goode Memorial Award and the Tesla medal from the International Tesla Society (Belgrade) for outstanding contributions to Computer Architecture. Mike is an avid gardener with a special affection for camellias and roses. ix
