3 Preface Welcome to the Seventh IEEE Southwest Symposium on Image Analysis and Interpretation (SSIAI 2006). The symposium takes place in downtown Denver, Colorado, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. The Grand Hyatt Denver Hotel promises comfortable meeting facilities in close proximity to Denver s 16 th Street Mall and other downtown points of interest. While you are here, I hope you can begin to explore the rich historical and cultural offerings in the vicinity. This year s symposium has 32 lecture and 16 poster presentations on a wide variety of topics within the general framework of image analysis. In addition, a number of plenary presentations and invited papers promise something of interest for everyone. Though the name Southwest reflects the origin of these symposia in the southwest region of the United States, SSIAI has typically had strong participation from outside the US. This year is no exception; SSIAI 2006 participants come from all over the world. I would like to thank Professors Joseph Havlicek and Til Aach for constructing the excellent technical program, arranging the plenary speakers, supervising the paper review process, and preparing for publication of the proceedings. The volunteer work of the many reviewers is greatly appreciated. Prof. K. Clint Slatton publicized the symposium and Prof. Marios Pattichis arranged for the proceedings to become available via IEEE Xplore. Ms. Sandi Willingham has once again graciously managed the registration and financial responsibilities with the support of Texas Tech University. Northern Arizona University provided webspace for the SSIAI 2006 website. I am very grateful for the advice of Prof. Jeffrey Rodriguez and Prof. Hamed Sari-Sarraf as I learned the details of conference organization and planning. I would also like to thank Ms. Amanda Graves, Mr. Patrick Rodecker, and Ms. JaDee Hoy of the Grand Hyatt Denver Hotel for their help with meeting facilities and accommodations.
