1 Nelson Rotary Club Queen City Rotary News Volume 6, Issue 8 December 2013 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Ed Edmondson Club President, 2013/14 The Power of the Rotary Family December is Rotary Family Month. The Rotary family is made up of 1.2 million members, but the Rotary family extends far beyond the number of members. It includes all the men, women, and children who are involved in the work of Rotary formally or informally. On the formal side we have Rotary members, Interact clubs, RYLA, Ambassadorial Scholarships, and Rotary Youth Exchange students. Our club offers Rotary Scholarships to graduating students from LV Rogers Nelson, Sentinel South Slocan, and JV Humphries in Kaslo. We host Group Study Exchanges and Group Friendship Exchanges. Informally husbands and wives, sons and daughters, friends and the Nelson community at large reach out to help our Rotary family with its many projects and events. We bring family and friends as guests to out meetings. As a club and family we look after each other, whether it is to exchange a Christmas Tree shift, take on added responsibilities to help a member out, visit and check up on members when they are ill or in hospital. We share family moments with our Happy/Sad Bucks, and send hope and encouragement through our Sunshine Committee. Wherever Rotary meets locally (Nelson Daybreak), regionally, nationally, or internationally you are made welcome as a family member. On Friday December 27th you are encouraged to bring your family to our noon hour meeting and enjoy the hospitality and friendship of the Rotary family. Engage Rotary, Change Lives QUOTE OF THE MONTH: Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. William A. 2 DGE NEWS By Norm McCarvell One of the roles of a Rotary District Governor is to support and promote the projects and work done by Rotarians around the world. The most important Rotary initiative which I and Rotarians throughout the world support is the fight to eradicate Polio. This has been a focus of Rotary since 1985 and has galvanized the efforts of Rotarians, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and local governments. In North America, Polio is a distant memory to many but those of us around in the 1950 s, likely recall the worry and fear as polio swept across the continent. The number of deaths and the levels of paralysis of survivors were unprecedented. My sister-in-law contracted polio in the mid fifties and has been a partial quadriplegic ever since. She has experienced iron lung machines, various types of respirators and a significant change in her life. Now, Polio remains in small pockets in three countries, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan with several new cases reported in Syria and the Horn of Africa. As stated in Rotary. org; After 25 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions....as long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high. Rotary s PolioPlus Eradication Program will continue to raise money and work with other Non-Government Organizations and Governments, in order to immunize children at risk and eradicate polio from the world. This is a fight worthy of our best efforts. SPONSOR A MARKET CHILD ONLINE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Go to org 2. Enter H.E.L.P. Honduras Society, click Search. 3. 3 ABC S OF ROTARY ROTARY PEACE PROGRAMS A special program of The Rotary Foundation was originally labelled the Rotary Peace Forum. The concept of a centre or educational program to promote greater understanding and peace in the world was originally discussed in 1982 by the New Horizons Committee and the World Understanding and Peace Committee. In 1984 it was further explored by a New Programs Committee of The Rotary Foundation. The essence of the Rotary Peace Program is to utilize the nongovernmental but worldwide resources of Rotary to develop educational programs around the issues that cause conflict among nations in the world as well as those influences and activities that promote peace, development and goodwill. The program includes seminars, publications or conferences as a means to initiate a global dialogue to find new approaches to peace and world understanding. Specific Rotary Peace Programs are selected twice a year by the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation. Many peace programs are held each year in conjunction with presidential conferences. Honduras International Convention Information on RI Convention, Sydney AU UPDATE ON POLIOPLUS by Jennifer Cowan The National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA) announced that with Nigeria sustaining the gains in the fight against wild polio virus, with only fifty cases reported in 2013, the agency is determined to eradicate polio in the country by Addressing a news conference in Abuja, Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Ado Mohammed said that there is a fifty-seven percent reduction in polio cases as against one hundred and twenty-one cases recorded in He however encouraged pregnant women especially in Borno, Kano and Yobe states to patronize primary healthcare facilities nationwide in order to reduce cases of maternal and child mortality. President Goodluck Jonathan had in November said that his administration would do everything possible to completely kick out polio in the country by Jonathan spoke at a forum on polio eradication organised by the Federal Ministry of Health at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa. Jonathan said that a situation where Nigeria is said to be exporting polio to neighbouring countries does not portray the country well. The most improved state was Niger State. 4 THE PASSING OF A GREAT WORLD LEADER: by Jennifer Cowan nelson mandela What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead. NELSON MANDELA Photo courtesy - Nelson Mandela Foundation On December 5, the world said good bye to one of the most important humanitarians of our time. Nelson Mandela, South African anti-aparthied revolutionary, polititian, and philanthropist served as President of South Africa from It is not an exaggeration to state that he effectively changed the world by tackling racism, poverty and inequality. In 1962, he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state, and sentenced to life imprisonment. After serving 27 years, an international campaign lobbied for his release, which occurred in 1990 during a time of escalating civil strife. It was at this time that he joined negotiations with President FW de Klerk to abolish apatheid and establish multiracial elections in He was elected as South Africa s first black president that year. Mandela was a controversial figure for much of his life. Denounced as a communist terrorist by critics, he nevertheless gained international acclaim for his activism, having received more than 250 honours, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Soviet Order of Lenin and the Bharat Ratna. He is held in deep respect We, the people of South Africa, declare for all our country and the world to know: That South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white, and that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of the people. Opening words of the Freedom Charter within South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Xhosa clan name, Madiba, or as Tata Father ; he is affectionately described as the father of the nation. 5 CHRISTMAS TREE SALES In pictures This year we ordered and recieved 500 Christmas trees and as usual, they were specactacular. A great crew got them out on display in record time at the Walmart Garden Centre, thanks to Rotarians and some members of the Nelson Leafs. We sold out on Dec 16 so it is safe to say we made some money for the coffers. A big thanks to all the dedicated Rotarians who braved the cold, without complaining, and kept spirits up despite the frigid temperatures of -16! Also, special thanks to our beloved mascot, Scooby, perhaps our most dedicated Rotarian of all. Great job everyone!! photos courtesy of K. Underwood Queen City Rotary News 5
6 INTERACT UPDATE By Wendy Lacroix Every year the city of Nelson hosts a Elf walk on Baker St. This year without exception all the elves came out dressed up in elf hats, reindeer ears, etc. The elves all gathered on Baker Street to welcome Santa and to parade him into the trading centre for some hot apple cider and baked goodies. Ten Interact Rotary members helped out by making popcorn for all the hungry parents and kids.they also assisted Santa in holding back the crowds while Santa had kids on his lap. This year the elf night was well attended by many families who were bundled up with hats, and scarves, as the temperature dropped down to a freezing minus 15!!! Ongoing Bottle Drive The elves included in the picture from left to right. Taavi Wickman, Ingrid Love, Josie Wright, Angela Lacroix, Jemma Rezansoff, team leader, Marg Stacey, and Roxanne Baker. The Interact members are still looking for your bottles as we are fundraising for project work in Guatemala. Please drop them off at the depot and say that you would like to donate them to the LV Rogers Interact Club. Your help is greatly appreciated.
