2 United States Veteran Service Organizations, Non-military associations, colleges and Boy Scouts of America Scholarships for Scouts As an Eagle Scout, there are many scholarship opportunities available to you. Some only apply if you go to a certain school, or a school in a certain state. Others require a parent or grandparent to be a member of the granting organization. Some require proof of need, others do not. Be sure that your high school college counselor knows that you are an Eagle Scout and interested in special scholarships. When you apply or are accepted by a school and you are talking to them about financial aid, ask if they have any special scholarships for Eagle Scouts. There is a wealth of information available on the web about scholarships for Eagle Scouts. Try your favorite search engine with "Eagle Scout" Scholarship. The listing below is just some of the many sites with information. Offerings, information, and web sites are constantly changing so some information may get out of date. PURPOSE: Various organizations and associations offer scholarships for Eagle Scouts, awards and recognition for Scouts of all ages. Some churches and other non-military organizations also offer scholarships but you have to ask to learn what it is and how much. Although many of these organizations exist, many others do not offer any and few that did, no longer support it based on their economic impacts so selection is going to be lean, but well worth the research if your child seeks funding for college. Approximately 66% are unaware of these opportunities and only a few venture out to explore them. MAIN BODY: Let s begin by promoting those that still offer accessible and reasonable monetary scholarships that await your application and potential awarding. A list of US Veteran Service Organizations, non-military associations, colleges, and Boy Scouts of America reviewed below explaining those awards and scholarships that are available to Scouts. Key to some is being a member of or able to provide proof that a parent, relative was eligible or a past member of that VSO. 2

3 This is not hard to overcome since many of the children today have had someone in their family that serviced in the US Armed Forces and qualifies based on their association with a service organization. Use that leverage to gain access to these programs. Many do not and its monies lost that otherwise could be used to pay for tuition fees. Several VSO s are derivative elements from parent organizations such as the United States Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy. These forces promote various organizations that are chartered and non-chartered by Congress that offer programs that focus in on the community children and youth and families. Veteran Service Organizations This list is limited to a snapshot of current VSO s, associations, and non-military groups that offer incentives, programs, and scholarships available. NOTE: This list is not complete. Other organizations might provide programs that offer scholarships and other academic awards that are not known or publicly published. You must conduct a thorough research. 30 Scholarships for Scouts If you re a high school student in America, you ve no doubt heard of the scouts. Both the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts of America are renowned institutions for young people, and while their popularity has waxed and waned with the times, there scouting community is thriving. With the founding principles or building character and responsible citizenship, the Boy Scouts of America and the National Eagle Scout Association offer a relatively large number of scholarships to scouts who achieve the highest level scout badge (Eagle). Most scouts will have to remain active through the application process in order to qualify, but there are also a small number of scholarships available to alumni. Similarly, the Girl Scouts of America have a number of scholarship opportunities for girl scouts. Girl Scouts of America works with corporations, community organizations and even colleges and universities themselves to help girl scouts obtain financial aid. Women s colleges like Douglass College (Rutgers University) and Lesley College (Lesley University) offer awards to girls scouts that are renewable for up to four years, and do not require that the student declares any specific major. It is important to note that most of the scholarships available to girl scouts are reserved for recipients of the Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest honor that a girl scout can receive, and recognizes outstanding leadership and service in the name of the Girl Scouts. Organizations that are not officially associated with scouting also offer scholarships to outstanding scouts. The American Legion, Elks Foundation and other private and non-profit entities reward top students with scholarships for boy and girl scouts. Many of these are provided regionally, and you can ask your current troop for more information about local scouting scholarships for college. 30

42 Final Thoughts There are some other resources that I urge you to follow-up with: your employer. Most larger corporations (and some smaller companies as well) offer either grants, loans, or a combination of both to outstanding sons and daughters of their employees (or to their employees) community-based agencies like the United Way. In most larger communities, the United Way/Appeal/Community Chest offices have a listing of organizations that want to make a specific contribution to the community but chooses not to donate directly to the UW's pool. churches and religious groups. Most of our larger religious organizations have organizations or mechanisms in which small grants or large loans (or workstudy grants) are given to deserving Scouts and Venturers/Sea Scouts. the federal government. Yes, our government still offers (it's getting smaller each year, but they do provide) the Pell Grant, other state and federal grants and several loan programs. Also consider voluntary service through AmeriCorps (as long as they are still being funded), which allows you to work in a community in exchange for a tution stipend or repayment on student loans or both. There's also a program called JTPA (it used to be called CETA; that have a small pool of funding to support for instance, local Councils hiring one or two volunteers to work in rural or intercity areas of their council. You get a small (it *is* small) paycheck, supplemented by the hiring agency; most importantly, you get valuable experience which transfers over to WORK. Check with your local Council. Girls seeking scholarships should contact their high school guidance counselor or the financial-aid office at the school they wish to attend for information on any scholarships that might be available to Girl Scouts. Read a full list of scholarships for Girl Scouts on the STUDIO 2B Web site, the Girl Scout Web site for girls 11-17, for stories and more information about college scholarships.
