5 DAAD stands for... Deutscher Akademischer AustauschDienst= German Academic Exchange Service DAAD is.....a membership organization of the German institutions of higher education DAAD supports over 74,000 individuals around the world

12 What Does a DAAD Scholarship Typically Include? Health Insurance All-Grantees Meeting in Bonn Some travel reimbursement

13 Timetable June November December January April DAAD application submission - Selection committees & personal interview - Applying to US & Canadian schools Award notification Placement/ Nominations/Applications Orientation workshop in Bonn May- July Obtaining visa (J1 or F1) September Semester begins/ health insurance waiver requests

14 Selection Process Takes place in the central office (Bonn, Germany) 40% of applicants are invited to a personal interview with a selection committee of 4-6 professors and administrators 25% are selected The scholarship covers 9 months, and one year extensions are possible (if a degree seeker). Students have to submit a new application.

15 Placement for the one-academic year grantees Flexibility of choice between placement or choosing any other school in North America A wish list of partner schools is provided Partner Schools in the US Partner Schools in Canada Placement also possible through partnership with an exchange program of a German school, an American school and the DAAD. Visiting student status & transfer of credits (German/American University)

16 German Degrees/ Diplom and equivalency Bachelor s, master s, doctoral degrees Traditional German degrees: Diplom, Magister

17 Billing/Logistics If the student is placed at a partner school, the bill is sent to the NY office (3 rd party billing) In all other cases, the bill is sent to the student. Limited funds are transferred to student s German account All students receive health insurance coverage; 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after the scholarship period Health insurance waiver requests Application fees, transcript fees, health services fees SEVIS fees
