6 An EM Joint Programme must (1): be implemented by a consortium of 3 EUR partners minimum (additional partners may be from EUR or third countries) be an integrated programme in all its aspects be based on consortium agreement signed by the governing bodies of the partner HEIs (signed before signature of specific grant agreement) include a mandatory mobility component be fully developed at the time of the application and ready to run for 5 consecutive editions as from 2011/12 6

7 An EM Joint Programme must (2): lead to the award of a fully recognised double, multiple or joint degree Independently from the tuition language, provide for the use of at least two European languages spoken in the countries concerned attract and recruit top class students / doctoral candidates / scholars provide insurance coverage sign agreements with the student / doctoral candidate on rights and obligations of both parties 7

8 EMMCs: specific features All partners must be able to act as host institution and deliver part of the curriculum min. 20 ECTS (for one year EMMCs) or 30 ECTS (for longer EMMCs) for European HEIs min. 15 ECTS for third country HEIs The EMMC must last between 1 (60 ECTS) and 2 academic years (120 ECTS) final examination results to be known at the latest in October of the year in which the EMMC finishes The consortium is free to define its participation costs amounts but: amounts must be transparent and clear to applicants there can be two different amounts for European and third country students EU contribution to participation costs: EUR 8000/yr (Cat. A), EUR 4000/yr (Cat. B) (partial) fee waiver for participation costs in excess 8

10 EMJDs: specific features (1) Based on the EMMCs model and on the experience of Marie Curie fellowships Focus of Marie Curie on individual research of grantees EMJDs emphasis on a long term structured inter-university cooperation model and the implementation of an integrated doctoral programme A double objective Shape doctoral studies in the European Area of Higher Education by promoting innovative models of joint governance between the university, research and professional sectors Support researchers from European and third countries in a framework of excellence 10

11 EMJDs: specific features (2) Organisations other than HEIs can be formal partners of the consortium providing teaching, training or research opportunities recruiting, employing, hosting doctoral candidates Finalization of EMJD within a maximum duration of 4 years but fellowships for max 3 years Training / research for a minimum total of 6 months in at least two of the consortium countries. Training component on researchers transversal skills and competences 11

12 EMJDs: specific features (3) Clear definition and justification of the thematic area(s) covered by the EMJD Recruitment of doctoral candidates under employment contracts unless prohibited by national regulation Follow the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the recruitment of Researchers Contribution to participation costs Fixed amounts ; different for laboratory and non laboratory based research must be transparent and clear to potential candidates 12

26 2010 Action 1 SELECTION TARGET o At least 10 new EMMCs and o Potentially 21 renewals (EMMCs arriving at the end of the 5 years cycle) o 10 new EMJDs All applications will be assessed on an equal footing! o Renewals have to demonstrate their quality (past performance not taken into account) o Last year: 15 renewals not selected (out of 34)! o EM Brand Name procedure offered to non renewed EMMCs 26 26
