Perfect Piece Inc. raised over $3,700 for Autism Speaks AND HANNAH SCHWEPPE MVP of Perfect Piece Inc. and awarded the title Entrepreneur for JEREMY FISCHER MVP of Infinite Industries. Infinite Industries raised over $1,200 for Cancer Family Care. JOHN WOODSON Senior Web Design Student of the Year CRAIG NIEMAN Personal Finance Outstanding Senior of the Year JOE BODNAR Music Video of the Year I Want It That Way TAYLOR BEIRNE Outstanding Honors Accounting Student of the Year NATALIE THOMPSON Winner of the 2012 Budget Challenge. Natalie won 1 st Place in the online budget simulation competing against 47 of her peers for 12 weeks as part of Personal Finance. RAMSEY DEAL Personal Finance Investor of the Year. Ramsey placed 1 st in the stock market game earning over $3,000 in 8 weeks. These students won 1 st place in the Ohio Financial Literacy Challenge and they are representing the State of Ohio in the National Financial Literacy Competition May 14 in St. Louis, Missouri AUSTIN BENTLE, RAMSEY DEAL, JEREMY FISCHER ART DEPARTMENT AWARDS Presented by Mrs. Kurlas Senior Creative Awards presented to: EMMA SABRANSKY, SCOTT SHINKLE, KATIE SOWLES, HANNAH WESTENDORF Congressional Art Award: EMILY FEIST, KATIE HARRINGTON, EMMA SABRANSKY Mount St. Joseph Selection Art Competition and Exhibit: EDEN CROSSET, HANNAH WESTENDORF 5

6 OTHER ACADEMIC AWARDS Madeira Woman s Club Scholarship STAND TO BE RECOGNIZED The Madeira Woman s Club awards a $2,000 to each of these scholarship recipients: TAYLOR CHRISTMAN, REBECCA NORTH Kenwood Woman s Club Scholarship STAND TO BE RECOGNIZED TAYLOR CHRISTMAN, PAULINA FISHER Greater Cincinnati Watercolor Society Competition framed CERTIFICATE The Greater Cincinnati Watercolor Society was formed in 2002 to encourage the creation of watercolor at all skill levels and to promote interest, appreciation and enjoyment of watercolor. This $500 scholarship is offered to a senior who is planning to continue their career in the art field and has and enthusiasm for the arts. Congratulations to: HANNAH WESTENDORF AAA Safe Driving Award CERTIFICATE This $500 award was donated by AAA Driving School who provides driver s education at Madeira. This award is presented to: PAIGE SCHLAGBAUM Madeira Youth Soccer CHECKS The Madeira Youth Soccer Board of Director awards two scholarships, $1000 each, to these seniors. LIESL HARTZ, IAN NEUMANN 6

7 Mikie Hummel Memorial Award - CERTIFICATE This is a one-time gift of $1,000 from the Hummel family to be used by the recipient in their freshman year of college. This award is in memory of Dr. Michele Hummel, superintendent of Madeira Schools from August, 1995 to August, Given to a senior who: 1.is enrolled as an education major at a four-year college 2.best demonstrates the personal characteristics of Dr. Hummel positive personal energy, dedicated learner, service to others and to the Madeira Schools community. Congratulations to: CRAIG NIEMAN The Madeira Middle School PTA Roger Slagle Memorial Scholarship CHECK presented by Steve Kramer This award is presented to the student who most embodies: 1. love of athletics 2. passion for living life to the fullest 3. positive attitude Congratulations to: ANNE GULICK Madeira High School PTA * Courage & Inspiration Award in honor of Ryan Korengel CERTIFICATE presented by RYAN KORENGEL This award is intended to recognize and aid a senior who has demonstrated courage in overcoming unforeseen obstacles and/or has inspired others in an extraordinary manner. This one-time award in the amount of $500 is presented to: MAX MANTKOWSKI Madeira High School PTA * I Made a Difference Award The spirit of this award is intended to recognize and aid a MHS senior who has demonstrated through service to their school or community; through a work experience; through family situation, etc. how they can say I Made a DIfference. 8 The Roger Anderson, Jr. Outstanding Senior Boy Award - CERTIFICATE The Roger Anderson, Jr. Outstanding Senior Boy Award is presented to the senior boy who most closely meets the following criteria as judged by the professional teaching staff of Madeira High School: 1. Above average in academics with emphasis on improvement and achievement. 2. Above average in sports with emphasis on improvement and good sportsmanship. 3. Service to school. 4. Service to community. 5. Sincerity. The recipient has his name inscribed on a plaque which is placed in the high school and is awarded a certificate and $50. The recipient of the 2012 Roger Anderson, Jr., Award is: The Nadine Wilson Outstanding Senior Girl Award CERTIFICATE presented by Mr. Larbes This award was initiated by the Class of 2011 as the equivalent of the Roger Anderson, Jr. Outstanding Senior Boy Award. It was named in honor of Nadine Wilson who coached freshman, JV and Varsity Women s basketball, volleyball, field hockey and track during her career at Madeira. She taught her players dedication, sportsmanship and to respect each other. The recipient will have her name engraved on a plaque which is placed in the high school main hallway. Congratulations to: ANNE GULICK John D. Rahe Scholarship CERTIFICATE This scholarship, funded by the Madeira Schools Foundation, in honor of former Superintendent of Schools John D. Rahe, recognizes the following students for their outstanding character and scholastic achievement. Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to these students: NICOLE DRAHMAN, PAIGE SCHLAGBAUM Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 will be awarded to: TAYLOR CHRISTMAN, PAULINA FISHER Sushila Nayar Math & Science Scholarship - CERTIFICATE This scholarship was established by a Madeira graduate, Uday Khosla, in honor of his grandmother who was a physician in India, worked in the independence movement from Great Britain, and was India s first health minister in India s Parliament. She also has authored many books regarding the non-violence movement and is an example of how those with science backgrounds have social impact. This award of $5,000 is presented to: NICOLE DRAHMAN 8

9 James Rockwell Memorial Scholarship - CERTIFICATE This is a one-time award of $500. This award is presented to the student who will be pursuing a major in the field of Science and is accepted at a four-year college. The recipient should also be a dedicated scientific learner who exhibits exemplary scientific achievement. This year the award goes to: Matt Simpson Art Scholarship CERTIFICATE Presented by Elaine Goetz, Matt s aunt This $1,000 merit-based scholarship is awarded to a current senior who will graduate this year and will be attending a 2 or 4-year art program. This award is presented to the student who most emulates Matt - an extra ordinary person who has a passion, talent and the dedication required to pursue a degree in visual art. This scholarship is given in memory of Matt. The recipient of this award reflects Matt s intense desire to create, his open-mindedness, and his free spirit. This award is presented to: HANNAH WESTENDORF Richard & Florence Wellman Scholarship CERTIFICATE Presented by Mr. Wellman Richard & Florence Wellman met as teachers at Madeira High School in the early 1940 s. Two of their four children are currently teachers one high school level; one a college professor. All four children are college graduates and in memory of their parents the children have initiated this scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be awarded to a student who will major in education and emulates the hard working ethic of the Wellman s and their children. This scholarship is awarded to: CRAIG NIEMAN Pat Wood Spirit Award - CERTIFICATE This award is presented in memory of former student, Patrick Wood, who attended Madeira schools from fall, 1992 until January, This award, in the amount of $500, is presented to a student who exemplifies Patrick s love of life, love of others, having an unselfish attitude, and has a will to persevere. 10 Greg Chase Tenacity Award CERTIFICATE This award is given in the memory of Greg Chase to a student who best demonstrates the following criteria: 1. Senior student athlete who is seeking to further their education through a four year college, junior college, trade school or military. 2. Strong determination to succeed in both academics and athletics and the tenacity to reach their goals as demonstrated by achieving an overall minimum GPA of 3.25 for grades 9 through 12; and, participation in any one or more sport at a varsity level for a minimum of two years and has received all league recognition from the CHL in at least one sport. 3. Leadership by example showing the work ethic and sweat equity necessary to achieve personal and team goals. This award in the form of a $500 Savings Bond is presented to: KEVIN COSTELLO CHL Scholar Athlete Award - CERTIFICATES Presented to senior athletes for outstanding academic achievement by maintaining a 3.5 GPA while participating in High School Varsity Athletics during this school year. JOE BODNAR, ANNE GULICK OHSAA/Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award - CERTIFICATE As part of an ongoing program to promote Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity, the Ohio High School Athletic Association has initiated the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award to recognize students who display exemplary sportsmanship. 11 OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award - CERTIFICATE The Ohio High School Athletic Association gives this award to outstanding student athletes who have received a minimum of four varsity letters and maintained a high scholastic average. This year s recipients are: ANNE GULICK, Army Reserve Scholar/Athlete Award JUSTIN DEHAN, HANNAH WESTENDORF U.C. Army ROTC Award presented by Capt. Tim Martin JORDYN MITCHELL National Merit Scholarship - CERTIFICATES Over 1.5 million students took the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and entered the National Merit Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by National merit Scholarship Corp. 34,000 high performers were named Commended Students. The Madeira students who will receive a Letter of Commendation are: JUSTIN DEHAN, ROBBIE KNEIP, LAUREN SHULL CARSON SOTELLO was name a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar In September 2011, 16,000 students were named Semi-Finalists. MEGAN DAMASKA, ALEC FREYTAG,, SUSAN WALLACE ALEC FREYTAG is the recipient of a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award for use at Knox College. is the winner of a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. SUSAN WALLACE is the winner of a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. Raymond G. Seifert Award - MEDALS The Raymond G. Seifert Award recognizes students who are enrolled in a college preparatory course of study and who earn a straight A average in all subjects during the school year. Students are awarded a medal. 12 Awards of Merit - CERTIFICATES Students who complete the criteria for the college prep curriculum including 3 credits of one foreign language or two credits each of two different foreign languages, 3 units of Math which must include 1 unit of Algebra and 1 of Geometry, 3 units of Science which must include 2 units from among Biology, Chemistry & Physics, as well as earning the equivalent of an overall G.P.A. of 3.25 for grades nine through twelve, maintain above average attendance for grades 9-12, participate in co-curricular, extracurricular or community activities, maintain above average attendance for grades 9 12 and demonstrate outstanding citizenship/character traits receive an Award of Merit from the Ohio Department of Education. 13 Honors Diploma STAND TO BE RECOGNIZED An award has been established to honor Ohio high school graduates. Students who meet eight of nine criteria in the following categories will receive an Honors Diploma: (1) earn four units of English; (2) earn three units of mathematics that include algebra I, algebra II, and geometry or complete a three-year sequence of courses that contain equivalent content; (3) earn at least three units of science that include instructional emphasis on the physical, life and earth and space sciences; (4) three units of social studies; (5) either three units of one foreign language or two units each of two foreign languages; (6) one unit of fine arts; (7) either one unit of business/technology and two additional units in 1 through 6 or earn three additional units in 1 through 6; (8) maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year; (9) obtain a composite score of 27 on the ACT tests or an equivalent composite score of 1210 on the SAT.
