We have reached and exceeded our Rotary Foundation Goal of $289,800. As of yesterday, we were at $319,000 with 10 days to go.

But I am very proud to announce that we have 186 Rotary Direct participants. Thank you!

You have successfully completed 37 District grants totaling $335,000 with the help of $58,000 matching District Designated funds.

Rotarians have embraced the proverb that societies become great when the old plant trees under whose shade they will never sit.

1 DISTRICT 7670 District Governor Newsletter Volume X I I Billi Black, District Governor June 2016 My Fellow Rotarians, STATE OF THE DISTRICT We have many things of which to be proud! For the first year in a while we have a net increase in membership of 2.6% - that has got to be attributed to your hard work and the leadership of Tiffany Ervin as District Membership Chair. We have reached and exceeded our Rotary Foundation Goal of $289,800. As of yesterday, we were at $319,000 with 10 days to go. Our Paul Harris Society, those that donate $1,000 a year every year has increased to 61. All of these are signs of excellence. But I am very proud to announce that we have 186 Rotary Direct participants. Thank you! I know this took many clubs out of their comfort zone but with time and more participants, you will enjoy the benefits. I understand this tool will be enhanced this year with an editing feature. Each month, Rotary will promote on its social media outlets a set of upcoming Live Auctions events, and ebay, the world s largest auction website, will donate a portion of all sale proceeds from those events to Rotary. Live Auctions events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States -- held at such auction houses as Sotheby s, Swann, and Freeman s -- without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing agreement, only U.S. auction sales are eligible. Meet Your 2016 CART Grant Recipients Dr. Chihiro Sato During May 2016, at the CART Annual Meeting in Columbia, SC, five grants were awarded to researchers totaling $600,000.

Her research will seek a biomarker that is different in the brains of the Alzheimer s disease patient and the brain of a healthy person. She is focusing on the Tau protein found in the nerve cell.

She hopes to use the biomarker to create a useful, inexpensive, and effective medical test for early detection of AD before massive brain damage has a chance to occur.

3 Meet Your 2016 CART Grant Recipients Dr. Chihiro Sato During May 2016, at the CART Annual Meeting in Columbia, SC, five grants were awarded to researchers totaling $600,000. The second researcher is Dr. Chihiro Sato of the Washington University Saint Louis School of Medicine. She received a CART Grant for $125,000. Her research will seek a biomarker that is different in the brains of the Alzheimer s disease patient and the brain of a healthy person. She is focusing on the Tau protein found in the nerve cell. She will use spinal fluid for her testing. She hopes to use the biomarker to create a useful, inexpensive, and effective medical test for early detection of AD before massive brain damage has a chance to occur. This is PDG Bill Parker s last CART Corner submission as the District 7670 CART Chair. Starting on 1 July, PDG Dennis Sanders will take over. Please give him your best support!! We measure CART giving from 1 May to 30 April. Please submit CART funds at least quarterly. Student publishes Chronicles of Peace interviews with 16 Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Fellows Gabriel Maisonnave, a master s student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Media and Journalism and a Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Fellow, produced Chronicles of Peace, a series of short audio interview with Rotary Peace Fellows. Maisonnave earned his bachelor s in international relations from the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires. He s interested in using traditional and new media to showcase stories about peace, conflict and reconciliation worldwide. Chronicles of Peace was produced in the spirit of using storytelling as a tool for building peace. The project includes three- to five-minute interviews with 16 Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Fellows whose work focuses on peace and conflict resolution. The fellows are enrolled in master s programs at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University, studying in a range of areas including political science, public policy, international relations and global health, among other disciplines. Fellows are fully funded for their academic through the Rotary Foundation. The Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center is one of six such peace centers around the world. It s the only one in North America and the only center co-hosted by two universities. The centers were established by Rotary International in 2002 in memory of its founder Paul P. Harris. The club congratulates each of these outstanding students and their parents for their academic achievement, their citizenship, and their hard work throughout the 2016 school year. Since 1983, one year after it was formed, the Rotary Club of Caldwell County has awarded scholarships to graduating high school seniors from all three high schools. Recipients for 2016 were recognized at the club's meeting. Front row, Chloe Marie Rosario from Hibriten High School, and Mikalah Martin from South Caldwell High School. Karen Kenney, chair of the Read2Me 2016 Essay Contest, introduced the students from the fourth, fifth and sixth grades who were this year s winners of the essay contest. Winners were presented certificates and prize money. The Rotary Club of Spruce Pine recognized and honored three Seniors of the Month from Mitchell High School. Hickory Area Post Polio Survivors Support Group's First Meeting A Success Twenty three people attended the kick off meeting of the new Hickory Area Post Polio Survivors support group on June 14, 2016 at Golden Corral in Hickory. The meeting was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hickory, and was attended by post polio survivors, their family members, AG O'Neal Shelton, and Polio Plus Chair Kimmie Rogers. Susie Fender of the Land of the Sky Post Polio Survivor group in Asheville was the guest speaker. Fender explained how their group operates, and shared lots of helpful information. The Land of the Sky support group has monthly meetings with medical professionals, medical suppliers, authors of books about polio, and personal testimonies as guest speakers followed by a time of fellowship and sharing for group members. The Asheville group has committed to mentor the new group forming in the Hickory area. Post polio survivors Gladys Seitz, Betty Buff, and Susie Fender are seen talking together after the kick off meeting of the new Hickory Area Post Polio Survivors support group.
