The present document was prepared on the basis of replies to a questionnaire that the United Nations Centre against Apartheid circulated among a number of organizations and scholarship agencies. It should be noted that it is incomplete as a number of those contacted have not responded so far. Organizations are encouraged to check the accuracy of the data contained in this document and, if necessary, provide additional information for inclusion in an up-dated directory to be published in due course. ]

15 NASSAU FELLOWSHIP SCHEME (NFS) British Council, London Description: NFS was launched in 1985 at the Heads of Government meeting in Nassau. The multi-lateral NFS programme has expanded rapidly with a total of 600 students having been sponsored so far for degree courses, diploma course, short courses, seminars of study visits in the fields of management and trade unionism. Number of students; one year postgraduate awards in health education annually.

19 19 - SKILLS FOR SOUm AFRICA (SFSA) Description; SFSA provides high-level training and work experience for victims of apartheid to create a large pool of competent and experienced Black managers and administrators for public and community life, business and commerce in post-apartheid South Africa. Particular attentio is paid to the sponsorship of wcmen candidates. Number of students; Since 1987, 132 fellows.
20 SOUTH AFRICAN EDUCATION PROGRAM (SAEP) Address 809 United Nations Plaza New York, NY Telephone; (212) Fax: (212) The Programme provides full scholarships to South African students to pursue degrees at United States universities in the field of physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, management, accounting, economics and agriculture. Number of students: 320 (in 1991) ; a total of 524 participants have completed degrees. 21 SOUTH AFRICAN EXTENSION UNIT (SAEU) Description; SAEU was launched in 1984 in Dar-es Salaam. Originally funded only by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC) it now attracts funds from non-commonwealth sources, bringing its current budget to annually. The students study basic English, mathematics and agriculture, with the majority pursuing "0" level courses, while some more advanced take "A" levels. SAEU is currently examining distance education in vocational subjects. Number of students: 1987/88 about /91 about 3,000
22 SOUTHERN AFRICA EDUCATION TRUST FUND (SÄEFT) Address Suite 1202, 1 Nicholas Street Ottawa KIN 7B7, Canada Telephone: Fax; SAETF, an independent Canadian charity founded in 1988, provides Canadians-based education and training programmes for black South Africans, supported by the Canadian Government. SAETF provides academic scholarships for advanced studies, work experience and informal training, creates partnerships and training when requested by non-governmental organizations within South Africa.
