1 483 About the Contributors Evans Osabuohien has a PhD (Economics) and started teaching and researching at Covenant University, Nigeria, in He is currently a Research Fellow at German Development Institute, Bonn, with a Fellowship from The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH). He has held the same Fellowship (AvH) at German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), Hamburg (January-September, 2013). His other internationally recognized awards include: Swedish Institute s Guest Doctoral Fellowship where he was a guest PhD Candidate at Lund University, Sweden (2009/2010); Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa s (CODESRIA) grant for PhD Thesis (2009); First Prize for FLACSO-WTO Chair Award (2012). He had his BSc and MSc (Sociology) in 2003 and 2008, respectively, from the same university. He has a substantial experience of the real sector of Nigeria and has travelled wide and far including China and India. His areas of research interests include Industrial Sociology, Sociology of Work, and Entrepreneurship Studies. He is a member of Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association. 2 Sheetal Agarwal is a Research Scholar in the Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi, India. She has completed her MPhil in Social Anthropology on Development and Displacement: Process of Marginalization of Women in India. She obtained her Master s in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Bachelors in Sociology from University of Delhi, India. She has taught Social Anthropology as a Visiting Faculty at Amity University, Noida and Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. She has also worked as a Research Associate with Centre for Women s Development Studies on a UGC project on Safety of Women on Campuses and Programs for Gender Sensitization. Her areas of interests are Gender, Displacement, Religion and Spirituality, Kinship and Indian Society. She is currently working on her PhD on Youth and Spirituality, exploring how youth connect with spirituality in a world where commercial and materialistic pursuits are taking over social and cultural value systems. Gideon Kofi Agbley is a Lecturer in Development Studies at the University for Development Studies, Ghana. He obtained his PhD in Development from the University of Cambridge. He is a Certified PRINCE 2 Project Management Professional. He is currently researching on large-scale land deals and its impact on gendered livelihoods commissioned by CODESRIA s Gender Institute on Land Grabbing. He teaches and conducts research in the following areas: Development Theory, Organizational Theory, Land Use Change and Rural Development, Public Policy Analysis, Social Policy Planning, Human Development and Capability Approach. His approach is to demonstrate the relevance of the capability approach in crosscutting issues such as social mobility, poverty and inequality, change management, gender, identity and social exclusion, disability, education and sustainable development, among others. He previously managed Odometa Agricultural Estates Ltd, a plantation development and out-grower value chain company. Ben E. Aigbokhan is a Professor of Economics at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Nigeria. He obtained his BSc (Applied Economics) from University of East London, MSc (Economics) from University of Stirling, Stirling, Scotland, and PhD from University of Paisley, Paisley, Scotland. He has taught in Paisley, Ambrose Alli University and Samuel Adegboyega Universities. His areas of research specialization are poverty and income distribution, fiscal policy, labor market issues, and monetary integration. He has published widely in international journals in these areas. He has undertaken consultancy assignments for UNECA, World Bank, ECOWAS, UNDP, and UNSTATS. He has undertaken funded research under the African Economic Research Consortium, Nairobi, Kenya. He is an alumnus of Oxford Round Table. He is currently the Vice-Chancellor of Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State, Nigeria, and Member of the Governing Council of Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan, Nigeria. Olanrewaju Emmanuel Ajiboye joined the service of Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos, about a decade-and-a-half ago, where he currently teaches and carries out researches in Social Gerontology, Gender, Theories, and Research Methodology. He holds PhD in Sociology with specialization in Gender and Social Gerontology from University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria. He has taught courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is the Coordinator of Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Social Work and Master of Social Work (MSW) in the Department of Sociology of Lagos State University. He is currently the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos. He has held various administrative positions in the University. His research articles have appeared in learned journals, locally, and internationally. 484

3 Kassa Teshager Alemu is a PhD Candidate in Development Studies at the University of South Africa and lectures at Department of Development Management in Ethiopian Civil Service University, Addis Ababa. He has a Master s degree in Development Studies with specialization in Local and Regional Development from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, and a Bachelors degree in Development Administration from Ethiopian Civil Service University. He has published widely and has rich experience in teaching and research. His research interests include local governance and decentralization, livelihoods, land, agriculture, food security, migration, social protection, value chain, rural and urban development, local economic development, private sector and NGOs development. Simplice A. Asongu is the founder and lead economist of the African Governance and Development Institute, chief economist of Africa-MENA consulting, founder and director of PLEHO International, founder and director of ASBL Freducan, and vice president of the Association of African Young Economists. As an independent economist, he has a scientific output of over 140 self-funded papers, of which more than 110 are singularly authored. His works have been published and/or are forthcoming in leading scientific outlets like the Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Economic Studies, South African Journal of Economics, African Finance Journal, and the African Development Review. Ibukun Beecroft is a Doctoral Student and ardent Researcher of Economics at Covenant University, Nigeria. She holds a BSc in Economics from Covenant University and MSc in Finance and Development from the University of London. She has worked with the Office for National Statistics, London, UK. She has won various research and travel grants to conduct economic research, some of which include: Free Trade Versus Protectionism in Africa: The Unending Contradiction, 2012, funded by the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), United Kingdom; UNU-WIDER Conference on L2C-Learning to Compete, 2013, Helsinki, Finland; Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis, 2014, amongst others. Her co-authored paper also won First Prize in the FLACSO-WTO Chairs Award, She has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Environment, Development, and Sustainability. Her research interests include: Political Economy, Fiscal and International Economics, and Economic Development. Michael Bruentrup is a Senior Researcher at German Development Institute (DIE), Bonn, with research focus on agricultural policies, agricultural trade policies, rural development, and food security, and a regional focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. He studied agricultural sciences at the University of Munich/Weihenstephan where he specialized in plant production and agricultural economics. Subsequently, he joined the University Hohenheim s multidisciplinary research program tagged Adapted Farming in West Africa, working as an agricultural economist. He wrote his PhD on Agricultural Price Policy and its Effect on Production, Income, Employment, and the Adoption of Innovations: A Farming System-Based Analysis of Cotton Policy in Northern Benin. He prepared a special research program on mountain agriculture in South East Asia for Hohenheim University. Later, he worked several years as a freelance consultant for German and international development and research organizations in the areas of microfinance, gender, agriculture, and resource economics. His latest interests at DIE are on linkages between bioenergy, rural development, and food security, as well as the role of agro-industry more generally (including large-scale land acquisitions) for development. He is extensively involved in policy advice for German and international development organizations. 485

4 Manase Kudzai Chiweshe is a Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the Centre for Development Studies, Chinhoyi University of Technology, Zimbabwe. He obtained his PhD from Rhodes University, South Africa. He has also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Sociology Department, Rhodes University Grahamstown, South Africa. He is currently a Research Fellow with the Futures Agricultures Consortium, Institute of Development Studies, and University of Sussex, United Kingdom. His research interests entail land and agrarian reforms, institutions, youths and development, gender and the sociology of soccer. James E. Conable is a Research Associate with the Expert Group on Development issues under the Graduate School Faculty of Social sciences, Lund University, Sweden. He holds BSc and MSc degrees in Development Studies from Lund University. His research areas include democratization, environment, globalization, and poverty. He has published peer-reviewed journal articles and presented papers at International Development Seminars and Conferences. Among his titles are Democratization Amidst Violence, Conflict and Wars: The Case of Nigeria; Investigating Local and International Framings of Deforestation: The case of REDD + Mechanism; The Era of Empire or Globalization? The Impact of the Global Shift on Development Thinking and Society; Investigating the Impact of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers on Poverty Reduction and Economic Empowerment: The Case of Nigeria, among others. He has recently authored two books released in 2012 and Uchenna R. Efobi is a PhD student in the School of Business, Covenant University, Nigeria. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). His research focus is on Institutions, International and Development Studies. He has won some research awards and grants, which include Global Trade Alert and African Centre for Economic Transformation joint award for commissioned paper on Contemporary Protectionism (2012), First Place Prize in the FLACSO-WTO Award, 2012 edition, and Grant for MSc Thesis Writing (from Covenant University) in He has about 28 publications in refereed journals and book chapters including the South African Journal of Economics, Journal of Economic Policy and Planning, African Development Bank Working Paper Series, Journal of Economic Cooperation and Development. He has also served as a reviewer to the Journal of Developing Areas. Essien D. Essien is an Ethicist. He has a PhD and currently teaches Social, Comparative Religious Ethics and Christian Ethics in the Department of Religious and Cultural Studies of the University of Uyo, Nigeria. His area of research include: Political Ethics which cover Development Studies, Governance and Ethics, Ethics of Political System, and Peace Ethics. He is a member of professional bodies and Associations such as the American Academy of Religion, Society of Christian Ethics, African Association for the Study of Religion, Nigeria Association for the Study of Religions, Global Knowledge Partnership, Global Ethics Network, Ethics World and Globethics. Dr. Essien has published two books, six book chapters, and many articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. 486

5 John Gasu has a PhD (Political Science) from University of Ghana, Legon, and teaches at the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies, Tamale, where he is the current Head of the Department of Social Political and Historical Studies. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and also contributed chapters to edited books. John is the author of the book Democracy and Governance in Neoliberal Africa: The Case of Ghana ( ). He is currently finalizing the manuscript for the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)-sponsored book titled Strengthening Higher Education Leadership in Africa: A Study of Ghana s Situation. Tayo George currently teaches Sociology at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels at Covenant University, Nigeria. She has attended several local and international conferences and has 20 publications in notable journals in the area of widowhood, education, religion, and women development. She has won several awards and grants locally and internationally. Her PhD research won CODESRIA small grant for thesis writing in Dr. George is passionate for scholarly research and result oriented. She has served in various capacities in sponsored researches within and outside Nigeria. She was the Team Leader of African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) collaborative funded research on Towards Effective Service Delivery of Nigeria s Primary Education: The Role of None-State Actors completed in 2010 and won a grant of USD5, 000 for research dissemination workshop in She won the prize for the best female student in the 2001 Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPMN) Professional examination where she is currently an Associate Member. Ciliaka M. W. Gitau is a PhD candidate in the School of Economics, University of Nairobi, Kenya. She holds Master s and Bachelor s degree from the same university. Her research focus is on development, international, financial and institutional economics. She has won some research awards and grants and has publications in refereed journals and book chapters. Godfrey E. Massay is a program officer for capacity building at Land Rights Research and Resources Institute (HAKIARDHI) in Tanzania. He leads land rights and governance training program for local institutions and communities. His research activities focus on Constitutionalism, land grabbing, land dispute settlement, wildlife management areas, and foreign investment in Tanzania. Godfrey s most recent work has analyzed land dispute resolution mechanism in the light of increasing land conflicts in Tanzania. Godfrey holds an LL.B from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Francis Matambirofa is the former Director of the African Languages Research Institute (ALRI) at the University of Zimbabwe. He has worked at the University of Zimbabwe in various capacities and held different responsibilities for more than 20 years at the same institution. His research interests are in the areas of language and linguistics, cultural studies, gender and democracy. Dr. Matambirofa has had teaching and research fellowships in the United States, where he taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Bryn Mawr College, Switzerland, Norway, and Mozambique, among other countries. He has also published books, book chapters and journal articles, as well as presented numerous seminar and conference papers in linguistics, lexicography, culture and gender studies at national, regional, and international forums. 487

6 Issah Moshood has a BSc Degree in Sociology from the Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. He is presently on his MSc (Sociology) degree program in the same university where he is currently a graduate assistant in the Department of Sociology. He was an outstanding student during his undergraduate studies emerging as the overall best student. His areas of research interests include Sociology of Development and Demography. Chipo Plaxedes Mubaya holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University of the Free State, South Africa. She is currently Deputy Director/Senior Research Fellow in the Directorate of Research and Resource Mobilization at the Chinhoyi University of Technology, Zimbabwe. Her research interests lie in rural development, Natural Resource Management, and rural/urban climate change adaptation. She has conducted research on gender dimensions in Natural Resource Management, specifically on issues of gendered access, use, and management of water and forest resources, including understanding vulnerability by gender and other marginalized social categories as part of a project on Building Adaptive Capacity to deal with Increasing Vulnerability due to Climate Change in Zimbabwe and Zambia. She is currently a team member for the African Union Commission for the Year of Agriculture 2014 on Maintaining the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Programme (CAADP) Momentum in the next decade. Patience Mutopo is a postdoctoral researcher with the Cologne African Studies Centre, University of Cologne, Germany, and the Rural Development Sociology Group, University of Wageningen, The Netherlands, under the Volkswagen Social Science Programme. She obtained her PhD, with a Magna Cum Laude from the University of Cologne in Germany. She is also a Senior Lecturer with the Centre for Development Studies, Chinhoyi University of Technology, Zimbabwe. Her research focus is on gender, land and agrarian reforms, livelihoods analysis, and the politics of policy making processes. She is a member of the Land Deal Politics Initiative, run by the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, The Netherlands, and the Network on the Legal Empowerment of the Poor administered by the Centre for Development Studies and the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, University of Oslo, Norway. Julius M. Ndambuki holds a BSc degree in Civil Engineering and a Master s from University of Nairobi, Kenya in 1988 and 1993, respectively. He proceeded to obtain his PhD (Civil Engineering) from Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, in He is widely published and is a Rated Researcher. His research interests include stochastic optimization, Decision Support Systems, Multi- Objective Optimization, as well as impacts of Climate Change on Water Resources availability. He is a Professor of Civil Engineering and current Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa. 488

7 Christian Lambert Nguena is a meticulous Researcher/Lecturer and economic development professional, who undertakes complex assignments, meets tight deadlines, and delivers superior performance. Recently, he published more than seven scientific articles in ranked journals, three chapters in book, one research report, six working papers, and six conference proceedings in a year. He is currently Editor-in- Chief of the AAYE Policy Research Working Paper Series and editorial board member of several ranked journal including Journal of Management and Sustainability. He won several awards for his research efforts and recently he has been awarded as a Young African Scholar at the 17 th International Economic Association World Congress out of several African researchers. Beyond academic research and lecturing, he is a bilingual development policy expert with extensive working experience with several international organizations, think tanks and academia including the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the United Nations Agencies, the European Union, the African Economic Research Consortsium, the International Development Research Centre...etc. He is also the Co-Founder and CEO of (The Association of African Young Economists). His core competencies include forecasting, money-banking-finance, sustainable development, econometrics. Yusuf Noah has his BSc Degree in Sociology from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1986, MSc in Industrial Sociology, and PhD Degree in Sociology from the same university in 1991 and 2003, respectively. He started his teaching career in 1992 as Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin. He became Professor of Industrial Sociology in October He has taught in other universities within Nigeria including Crawford University Igbesa, Ogun State, and Ibrahim Badamasi University, Lapai, Niger State. His research interests include Industrial Sociology, Industrial Relations, Women and Work and Worker Participation Studies. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Ilorin Journal of Business and Social Sciences. He is a member of prominent professional associations like Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association, Social Science Council of Nigeria, Nigerian Industrial Relations Association, and American Sociological Association. He serves as an External Assessor to several universities in Nigeria. Abiodun E. Obayelu lectures at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Nigeria. He obtained BAgriculture and Master s in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. He also obtained MSc and PhD degrees in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His research interests include: agricultural innovations, impact evaluation, environmental/resource economics. He has published over 40 research papers and has won a number of awards and international recognitions, including: Doctoral Research Award by African Economic Research Consortium-AERC and International Development Research Centre-IDRC (2009); PhD Thesis Award by Postgraduate School University of Ibadan (2009); and United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship-USASBE recognition for outstanding service in reviewing, evaluating, and providing scholarly insights for the 2012 national conference at New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a member of editorial board of African Journal of Economics and Management Studies; Emerald Emerging Markets Case Studies; and associate editor of the Journal of Agricultural Science. 8 Manyanhaire Itai Offat is a Senior Lecturer, PhD candidate, and holder of a Masters of Arts Degree in Environmental Policy and Planning (MEPP), Bachelor of Science Honors Degree in Geography from the University of Zimbabwe and a Bachelor of Science in Education (Geography) from Instituto Superior Pedagogico Enrique José Varona, Cuba. He is Program Leader in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Zimbabwe Open University. He has 15 years of work experience in distance and open learning working at regional centers and the national center within the Zimbabwe Open University. He has extensive experience in publishing, journal papers, module writing, reviewing and editing, presenting papers at conferences, supervising open and distance learning processes, and serves on university committees and examination boards. He has a passion for teaching and learning of environmental issues through distance and open learning. Kehinde Ola teaches Economics at Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State, Nigeria. He has special interest in rural economics. He obtained BSc (Economics) from University of Ilorin, Ilorin, and MSc (Economics) from Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos State. Oluyomi Ola-David holds a PhD in Economics and is a member of faculty in the Department of Economics and Development Studies, Covenant University, Nigeria. While her Doctoral research investigates the productivity effects of FDI presence in developing countries, she teaches undergraduate courses in macroeconomics, development economics, and entrepreneurship development studies. She has coordinated online discussions for UN-Habitat on urbanization, cities, and sustainable development towards the Post-2015 development framework. She has also participated in a funded collaborative research project on the socio-economic effects of the informal sector in Nigeria and is a contributor to many international journals and forthcoming publications including the 18 th Volume of the African Perspectives Yearbook on Africa s Progress in Regional and Global Integration. She is an alumnus of Brown University s International Research Institute on Technology and Entrepreneurship Management and a member of the Association for the Advancement of African Women Economists. Felicia Olokoyo is a lecturer in the Banking and Finance Department, Covenant University, Nigeria. She graduated in 2003 with a BSc degree in Banking and Finance with First Class Honors. She got her MSc and PhD degrees in Finance from Covenant University with a specialization in Corporate Finance. She has research interest in international finance, capital structure, corporate performance, and corporate governance. She is a Fulbright Scholar and a State Alumnus and has won several awards. She is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and the Nigerian Society for Financial Research (NSFR). She is also a member of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), the International Forum for Democracy and Peace and the International Academy of African Business and Development. She has published in reputable referred journals and also serves as a reviewer to numerous journals. 490

9 David O. Omole has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He also completed Master s (2006) and PhD (2011) in Civil Engineering specializing in water resources and environmental engineering. His research is on water quality and has recently focused on sustainable consumption, groundwater quality, environmental laws and regulations, as well as water treatment plant technologies. He is passionate about helping the poor get access to quality water in adequate quantity. He is a 2009 International Foundation for Science (IFS) Scholar and also won the National Research Foundation, South Africa, Knowledge, Interchange, and Collaboration (KIC) Travel Grant in He is currently a post-doctoral research fellow at the Civil Engineering Department of Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa. Andrew Onwuemele holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Benin. He was formerly a lecturer at Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State and later Osun State University, Osogbo in the Department of Geography. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research in the Social and Governance Policy Research Department. He has a particular research interest in Rural Development and Natural Resource-Based Livelihoods, Resilience in Rural Livelihoods and Natural Resource Management, Adaptive Responses to Environmental Change; Community Driven and Participatory Development Processes. His present research includes impact of climate change on rural households, response strategies of rural households to climate change particularly coastal communities in the Niger-Delta, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, gender and environment, spatial pattern of rural development, rural infrastructure, and rural non-farm farm sector, among other rural issues. Renny Rueda Castañeda is a PhD candidate on Economy and Social Sciences (WISO) of the University of the University of Hamburg, Germany. He is an Economist with studies on Government, Management, and Public Affairs (Externado Colombian University, Columbia University of New York), Economic Analysis (University of Berkeley, USA), and MA on International Law (Complutense University of Madrid, Spain). He has also served as an economic consultant to the Inter-American Development Bank and a lecturer on international economy and political science in various Universities in Colombia. His research deals with the construction of norms on scenarios of political asymmetry, focusing in cases of constitutionalization of principles and approaches to modern development at the Bretton Woods Institutions. Beyond his academic activities. Renny is also a co-founder of Ecodemocracy, an organization that aims to enhance the discussion on technological, scientific and direct democracies, as well as the effects of the current global economic architecture over autonomous domestic political processes. 491

10 Falendra Kumar Sudan is currently a Professor in the Department of Economics, University of Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, with specialization in Development Economics, Demography, and Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. He is Adjunct Research Fellow to University of South Australia, Adelaide; Visiting Senior Research Fellow to Institute for Human Development, New Delhi; and Visiting Faculty to Institute of Dalit Studies, New Delhi. He has been awarded various inter-disciplinary post-doctoral research projects and national and international fellowships in multi-disciplinary perspectives funded by institutes such as: World Bank, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Labor, Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi, University Grants Commission, New Delhi, and so on. He has served as Editor of International Journal of Environment and Development ( ). He has extensively visited foreign universities for academic and research collaboration and participation.
