This past year has bee a especially excitig oe for Villaova Uiversity ad the Villaova School of Busiess (VSB). The big ews was, of course, our Me s Basketball team s performace i the NCAA touramet ad that pheomeal champioship wi i Housto. Just a few weeks later, we leared that the Villaova School of Busiess was raked #1 i Bloomberg Busiessweek s rakig of the best udergraduate busiess schools. At the Ceter for Global Leadership, we have also had a excitig year. Our program offerigs cotiue to expad, the umber of studets egagig i iteratioal activities cotiues to grow, ad the fiacial support we are able to offer studets cotiues to icrease. Our studets are studyig abroad i record umbers ad the programs that iclude a study abroad elemet are expadig. For example, we have oce agai itegrated a immersio trip ito a special sectio of the required Global Political Ecoomy course, ad our ew olie MBA icludes the same Global Practicum excursio as our Fast Track MBA. These iitiatives come o top of the already vibrat study abroad programs at the udergraduate level, icludig our freshma Global Citizes program, which will be returig to Sigapore i Sprig 2017; our sophomore program i Urbio, Italy; ad our various summer study abroad optios. We were successful i securig a additioal $350,000 i scholarship fuds from The Freema Foudatio, which has allowed us to dramatically icrease erollmet i our Shaghai study abroad ad itership program. These fuds, alog with cotiued support from our Advisory Coucil ad other doors, have placed CGL o a solid ad sustaiable path for the future. We cotiue to egage our Advisory Coucil members i meaigful ways, icludig servig as studet metors, arragig site visits ad iterships for our studets while abroad, ad takig part i professioal developmet activities such as our Jauary trip to Havaa, Cuba. The Ceter, our leadership ad the joural we support have also gaied recogitio for our work. Our Director, Kim Cahill, was selected for a prestigious Fulbright travel grat; the Joural of World Busiess, housed at the Ceter, has grow i promiece ad ifluece; ad last year s Aual Review wo a umber of prestigious awards. 4 Aroud the World: Global Programs The Freema Foudatio Awards $350,000 for Asia Itership Scholarships The Freema Foudatio awarded a two-year $350,000 grat to Villaova Uiversity s Ceter for Global Leadership. The grat will expad studet participatio i iterships i East ad Southeast Asia by allowig udergraduates from across the Uiversity s schools ad colleges to take part i programs icludig the Shaghai Busiess ad Commuicatio Itership ad the Global Citizes program i Sigapore. It will also expad itership opportuities i a variety of other idustries ad locatios. The grat is a cotiuatio of The Freema Foudatio s partership with Villaova to create opportuities for studets to study ad work i key emergig global markets where they gai a competitive edge for years to come. Last year, a Freema Foudatio award of $100,000 to Villaova was a powerful driver of icreased studet participatio i the East ad Southeast Asia itership programs. Empowerig Madagascar Villaova Uiversity has bee ivolved with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) global humaitaria activities sice From the begiig, CGL Associate Faculty Director Ke Taylor, PhD, has bee actively egaged i this relatioship. I Summer 2015, Dr. Taylor was the VSB represetative i a uiversity delegatio that visited Madagascar for 10 days to explore ways i which Villaova could assist CRS i their ogoig efforts. CRS has bee operatig i Madagascar (CRS-MG) for 52 years, durig which time they have lauched six large-scale projects throughout the coutry. Most recetly, CRS-MG was awarded a $38 millio, five-year USAID food security grat i Durig the fall of 2016, Uiversity Presidet the Rev. Peter M. Doohue, OSA, PhD, 75 CLAS siged a Master Collaboratio Agreemet with CRS to deepe the affiliatio betwee the istitutios by cooperatig through educatio, research, advocacy ad service. This ew commitmet by Villaova has already begu to impact VSB. I the sprig of 2016, Dr. Taylor brought this learig opportuity ito the classroom by itegratig a case study of Madagascar ito his hoors sectio of Global Political Ecoomy. Studets were combied ito teams with Dr. Ruth McDermott-Levy s Global Health course i the College of Nursig to ivestigate the ecoomic ad social impact of Malagasy health issues. I February, CGL hosted Tom Shaw, CRS s seior techical advisor o microfiace, who gave a presetatio to the Villaova commuity. His topic focused o CRS s smart skills approach to ehace savigs amog the poor of Madagascar. 8 Aroud the World: Global Programs EMBA Class XVI visits South Africa I the sprig of 2016, Executive MBA Class 16 visited Johaesburg ad Cape Tow, South Africa, as part of their Global Maagemet Course taught by Ceter Faculty Director Dr. Joatha Doh ad May Nuez 03 MBA. While i Johaesburg, the group visited the Apartheid Museum, a youth program i Kliptow, Soweto ad Erst & Youg. They also toured the BMW plat ear Pretoria; worked with etrepreeurs at Jozihub, a icubator for small busiess; ad visited a airplae factory. I Cape Tow, the group visited the Desmod Tutu Foudatio, Pep Stores, Distell Corporatio ad the V&A Waterfrot. A group of the studets atteded a small service at which Archbishop Desmod Tutu presided ad had a opportuity to iteract with him. The studets also had a chace to meet with EMBA studets ad alumi from the Graduate School of Busiess, Uiversity of Cape Tow. The EMBA studets always travel to a developig or emergig coutry or regio, ad this esures that the studets are exposed to social, political ad ecoomic coditios that are distict from those they experiece i the Uited States. The immersio program is a critical elemet i the Global Maagemet Course ad VSB s EMBA program more broadly. It provides studets with a opportuity to explore ad test may of the theories, frameworks ad models discussed i the classroom. Adam Smith EMBA 16 said, The trip to South Africa is extremely relevat to all of our class discussios because it offered so may differet views that expaded my uderstadig of the culture, challeges ad operatios i South Africa. 9 Aroud the World: Global Programs Villaova Top Raked for Study Abroad Each year, the Istitute of Iteratioal Educatio publishes Ope Doors, a report o iteratioal educatio that icludes iformatio o US studets studyig abroad for academic credit at their home uiversities. Uder the leadership of Liz Campaella, director, Office of Educatio Abroad, Villaova Uiversity raked secod atiowide amog master s istitutios i the Leadig Istitutios by Total Number of Study Abroad Studets category. Villaova was raked third i the atio amog master s uiversities for the umber of studets o semester-legth study abroad ad fifth i the atio for the umber of studets o short-term study abroad programs. For the academic year , 156 VSB udergraduates studied abroad o a semester or full-year program ad 106 udergraduates studied abroad durig the summer term. These short-term programs are especially suited to those udergraduate studets who may have difficulty beig away for a etire semester due to academic, athletic or other o-campus commitmets. They are also appealig as a secod iteratioal experiece for studets who may have already participated i a semester study abroad program. I additio, most of these programs ivolve a itership or practicum, allowig studets to gai professioal experiece while also pursuig their coursework. Overall, 49.5 percet of VSB s udergraduate class of 2016 completed a study abroad program prior to graduatio, ad 16 percet had two iteratioal experieces, a figure that has grow cosistetly over the past five years. 58 PROGRAMS 19 COUNTRIES VSB udergraduates studied i more tha 58 differet programs i 19 coutries icludig Brazil, Chia, New Zealad ad South Korea. Oe-third of semester studets were i o-eglish speakig coutries ad 23 percet udertook a iteratioal itership durig their time overseas i locatios such as Dubli, Hog Kog, Lodo, Shaghai ad Sydey. At the graduate level, 34 studets studied abroad o short-term iteratioal immersio programs durig the witer ad summer terms. Nearly all VSB graduate studets are employed full-time ad the short-term programs allow studets the flexibility to have a iteratioal experiece ad still maitai their professioal commitmets. Graduate studets traveled to 10 differet coutries i Asia, Europe, South America ad the Middle East. Additioally, all Fast Track MBA studets travel iteratioally durig sprig break to fulfill requiremets for the Global Practicum, ad all EMBA studets complete a required global immersio with a embedded travel compoet each May. VSB s olie MBA Global Practicum course lauched this summer, with 26 studets travelig to Budapest ad Prague. CGL Recogizes Six Global Leadership Fellows Graduates I April, CGL celebrated the six graduates of the 2016 Global Leadership Fellows (GLF) program. Lauched i Fall 2011, the program provides a small, select group of VSB studets with a opportuity to emphasize global leadership ad itegrate it throughout their udergraduate experiece. The GLF program icludes special curricular ad extracurricular offerigs that ecourage icreased iteratioal study ad supports the pursuit of careers i global busiess. GLF studets are paired with a metor from CGL s Advisory Coucil ad are awarded a certificate that ames them life-log VSB Global Leadership Fellows. Studets who egage i the GLF program must study abroad twice durig their academic career. They will develop global leadership skills, lear to avigate the complexities of coductig busiess iteratioally, ad gai a uderstadig of how specific busiess disciplies maifest i differet cultural settigs. As Cuba s doors slowly slide ope to US busiess ad travel, the opportuities for learig are tremedous i early every disciplie. CGL orgaized a educatioal program for 27 Villaova faculty, staff, alumi ad guests o a People to People exchage program that took place i Havaa, Cuba i early Jauary. CGL partered with the World Affairs Coucil ad Distat Horizos o this excitig iitiative, which icluded roudtable discussios, briefigs ad site visits that explored museums, historic moumets, architecture, arts ad culture. Participats visited the Cetro Cultural Padre Félix Varela, housed i the beautiful Sa Carlos ad Sa Ambrosio Semiary ad amed i hoor of the revered 19th cetury Cuba priest. The ceter was fouded i 1990 ad is ru by the Catholic Church as a log-term project reflectig iterest i promotig cultural solidarity, participatory politics, iclusive ecoomy ad civil society. The ceter icludes space for educatioal semiars, art expos, film screeigs, cocerts ad other cultural evets. CGL Advisory Coucil member Al Martiez-Fots 71 CLAS sits o the board of Caritas Cubaa ad facilitated a site visit to its headquarters i Havaa where CGL participats could provide persoal doatios i support of their programmig. Caritas Cubaa is a orgaizatio of the Catholic Church fouded by a decree from the Bishops Coferece of Cuba i February It is curretly oe of the few idepedet o-govermetal orgaizatios i the coutry ad works i coordiatio with Catholic Relief Services. CGL Cuba participats were able to experiece the etrepreeurial spirit of Cubas i several ways. The first was by diig i a ew wave of private restaurats called paladars. Most of the paladars started as family-ru establishmets i the owers homes ad were subjected to strict limitatios by the Cuba govermet, but they have sice expaded sigificatly to iclude professioal chefs ad specially desiged architectural spaces that have radically trasformed the culiary ladscape. I aother sig of the chagig Cuba ecoomy, program participats also visited El Trigal Wholesale Market, the first privately ru agricultural cooperative sice Cuba moopolized wholesale operatios i the 1960s. El Trigal is maaged by a cooperative that leases space from the govermet ad charges a fee to idividual produce sellers. Carlos Sabo, oe of the foudig parters, addressed the group ad explaied that El Trigal has provided a large space where private farmers sell their goods to idividual buyers for use i private ad state-ru restaurats, hotels ad cafeterias. More tha 6,000 tos of agricultural products move through this facility weekly. To more fully appreciate the perspective of the educators, ecoomists, artists, farmers ad charitable orgaizatios with whom we iteracted, I costatly challeged myself to set aside my prior assumptios ad cosider alterative orms. As a result, I walked away elighteed, curious ad icredibly grateful for the iteractios we shared. Deise Haes Dowey, PhD, CPA, assistat professor, Accoutacy & Iformatio Systems Today s challeges i Cuba iclude poverty, limited resources ad agig ifrastructure. However, there are rich legacies of fie arts, music ad dace. Farmers grow sugar, coffee ad the tobacco that makes the famous Cuba cigars. Maufacturig, egieerig, medicie ad educatio are all areas ripe for cotiued study ad observatio. Tourists visit from all over the world, ad it will be especially iterestig to see how Cuba s tourism idustry evolves i the face of pet up demad from America travelers. Participats visited Vivero Alamar, a state-owed research garde fouded i 1977 as a way to feed the surroudig eighborhood. Origially a 800 square-meter vegetable garde, the farm has grow to over 25 acres ad icludes aimals, fruit, herbs, viegars ad spices. It employs over 160 people ad sells its produce to early 50,000 people yearly. The farm plats three millio seedligs ad harvests 300 tos of vegetables aually. Gratees have the opportuity to lear about the host coutry s educatio system as well as establish etworks of US ad iteratioal colleagues. Gratees retur with a ehaced ability to serve ad ecourage iteratioal studets ad prospective study abroad studets, ad to promote cross-cultural exchage ad collaborative research. The IEA semiar i Germay focuses o iteratioalizatio of higher educatio, career services, fudraisig ad etwork buildig. The 20 participats came from a variety of istitutios across the US ragig from commuity colleges to large research uiversities. The program provides a overview of the higher educatio structures i Germay ad ew developmets such as the Bologa reforms, employability, mobility across borders, ad access ad equity i the cotext of a ever growig diverse populatio.
