The year has bee filled with ecoomic, legislative ad small busiess successes. Our ecoomy is cotiuig to diversify itself, addig a ew market for startups ad fosterig buddig etrepreeurs. We are seeig much-eeded ivestmet i the city s ad couty s ifrastructure that will oly make us more appealig to local ad iteratioal ivestors. Durig the 2017 aual meetig, I talked a lot about participatio be it with the Mobile Area Chamber, or a oprofit, or o a legislative issue that seems dautig o the surface. Durig the last year, I was lucky eough to be the fly o the wall watchig passioate, hard-workig ad committed wome ad me put aside differeces ad agedas to come together to do what s right for Mobile, ad it s workig. It s easy to miss how oe small actio ca have a large impact, which is why this year my eyes have bee wide ope watchig, learig, participatig. 6 JOBS As the area s lead ecoomic developer, the Mobile Area Chamber s jobs focus spas recruitmet, retetio, job creatio, etrepreeurial assistace, small busiess developmet ad workforce developmet. The backdrop for Walmart s aoucemet was APM Termials Mobile, sigalig the impact the compay s ew direct import distributio ceter would have o both the Port of Mobile ad the cotaier termial. It was the secod ecoomic developmet project aouced by the Chamber i Top Ecoomic Developmet Aoucemets Ecoomic developmet successes for 2017 icluded two headquartered operatios ad some familiar ames i the worldwide marketplace. As the lead ecoomic developer for the City of Mobile ad Mobile Couty, Chamber-led project aoucemets icluded $350 millio i capital ivestmet ad 647 ew ad retaied jobs. I additio, there were 1,400 part-time positios associated with 2017 projects. 1 SSAB Americas The compay aouced it would relocate the divisio s head office from outside Chicago to Mobile, ad with it 95 high-payig positios. The compay has early 600 employees at its steel mill i Axis. To sell employees o Mobile, the Chamber orgaized several travelig delegatios to visit with SSAB employees i the Chicago area i a effort to recruit them to move here. The local delegatio provided pertiet iformatio o housig, educatio ad the Mobile ecoomy. 2 Cotietal Motors Group After a extesive iteratioal search, the compay reewed its commitmet to Mobile as its global corporate headquarters, retaiig more tha 300 high-payig jobs locally. The compay will build a ew maufacturig facility at Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, estimated at approximately $70 millio. 3 Walmart Withi 48 hours of the Cotietal ews, Walmart aouced Mobile would be home to its ewest direct-import distributio ceter i charge of stockig small distributio ceters alog the Gulf Coast, creatig more tha 550 ew, direct jobs. The $135 millio ivestmet icludes a 2.5 millio-square-foot facility, ad will sigificatly icrease traffic at the Port of Mobile ad APM Termials Mobile. 4 Kimberly-Clark The compay s latest ivestmet i the Mobile facility is valued at $75 millio ad is the first of multiple ivestmets expected over the ext two years. 5 Amazo The iteret retailer aouced it would build a sortatio ceter i west Mobile. The Next Chapter The Chamber coducted its fourth Parters for Growth (PFG) campaig to fud its ecoomic developmet program of work for Measurable goals iclude busiess recruitmet, ivestmet ad jobs; expadig existig idustry; assistig with opportuities for startups ad etrepreeurs; icreasig the umber of highly-skilled employees; growig capacity ad success of diverse compaies through ehaced services ad programs; ad developig ad supportig local, regioal, statewide ad federal policies that ecourage ad assist the growig populatio ad improve Mobile s quality of life. Campaig co-chairs were Elliot Maisel, Gulf Distributig; Mark Nix, Ifirmary Health; Mike Saxo, Alabama Power; ad Bria Willma, Regios Bak. PFG met its five-year $11 millio goal with commitmets ad pledges from more tha 140 private ad public ivestors. Program results from the previous effort were 1,802 full-time jobs created with wages averagig $48,845 ad ivestmets of $1.45 billio. Program goals were 4,000 jobs with a $40,000 average aual salary ad $1.5 billio i capital ivestmets. Before year s ed, the program wo a U.S. Ecoomic Developmet Admiistratio grat to structure, raise fuds ad establish a seed fud for high-potetial etrepreeurs i the Gulf Coast regio. 2 Emergig Leaders The Chamber recruited the U.S. Small Busiess Admiistratio program to Mobile. Participats represeted 20 compaies from Mobile ad Baldwi couties, Biloxi ad Pesacola, more tha half of whom were members of the Mobile Area Chamber. Each compay presidet/ceo graduated from the stage-two etrepreeurial traiig program with a three-year strategic growth actio pla. Chamber parter orgaizatios were the City of Mobile, Mobile Couty, Easter Shore Chamber of Commerce, Alabama Small Busiess Developmet Ceter ad the Wome s Busiess Alliace. This former dowtow warehouse will soo be coverted to a etrepreeurial hub alog Mobile s growig techology corridor o St. Louis Street. 3 Startup Weeked / Take 2 This Techstars ad Google for Etrepreeurs program was offered agai i 2017, providig competitors with a crash course of the startup experiece. Approximately 270 participats atteded the six sessios. 5 The Chamber partered with the Uiversity of South Alabama ad Iovatio PortAL to offer the iaugural Miority Busiess Accelerator, a program for small, miority-owed compaies to develop iovative growth strategies. Five compaies participated The third class cosisted of 16 CEOs ad busiess leaders who completed the traiig desiged to foster a thrivig etrepreeurial commuity. 7 Alabama Lauchpad Startup Competitio For the first time, the Ecoomic Developmet Partership of Alabama program held its competitio i Mobile, with two local compaies as fialists. The Chamber metored local competitors, ad co-sposored the evet with the Uiversity of South Alabama. 8 As the Chamber wrapped up the Youg Etrepreeurs Academy for high school studets i partership with the Alabama School of Math ad Sciece, the orgaizatio participated i other youth programs icludig the City of Mobile s Youth Empowered for Success Iitiative ad Mobile Couty Public Schools Summer Itership program.

9 Top Workforce Iitiatives Oe critical key to busiess growth is the availability of skilled cadidates who ca fill ope positios. Here are several ways the Chamber works to respod to workforce eeds: 1 The Chamber s Gulf Coast Techology Coucil grated $8,500 i scholarships to six area uiversity studets pursuig techology-related careers i efforts to keep them i the area followig graduatio. It is the 11 th year of the program. Moies were doated by 24 local busiesses. 2 Alog with a regioal leadership team, the Chamber worked o garerig employer support for the ACT Work Ready Commuities iitiative. Mobile Couty met its assiged goal of recruitig 119 employers who agree to use the Natioal Career Readiess Certificate to scree job applicats. 3 Two studet programs by the Chamber-led Bay Area Healthcare Coalitio cotiued i I its 15 th year, the two-day Health Occupatios Career Fair offered more tha 700 Mobile ad Baldwi Couty 10 th graders hads-o exposure to high-demad, high-wage healthcare jobs i the area. The three-day job shadowig program Summer Scrubs provided 104 regioal high school studets the opportuity to lear about the health idustries i area hospitals, cliics ad doctor s offices. I September, the Chamber ad Alabama Departmet of Commerce led a statewide trade missio to Australia ad New Zealad. The group participated i a etworkig receptio at the home of the U.S. Cosul Geeral Valerie Crites Fowler i Sydey. The ew software created a seamless ad streamlied solutio, reducig costs ad potetial errors as well as turaroud time. The Chamber reamed its miority busiess iitiative Diversity ad Iclusio to better reflect its comprehesive efforts to create jobs. Presetig New Markets Helpig busiesses coect to global markets is the focus of the Chamber s iteratioal trade efforts. Ogoig committees addressig ecoomic developmet issues i 2017 were: Busiess Retetio ad Expasio, cosistig of 142 large ad small busiesses ad etrepreeurs; Gulf Coast Techology Coucil, comprised of 183 compaies; OffshoreAlabama.com, a partership of 119 oil ad gas producers, service providers, suppliers ad associated compaies; the Growth Alliace Task Force, ivolvig 45 miority-owed small busiesses; ad the Small Busiess Coucil, cosistig of 45 members who advocate for small ad disadvataged busiesses. Several members from OffshoreAlabama.com promoted Mobile s oil ad gas idustry at the world s largest global oil ad gas trade show held i Housto. High school studets who participated i the Chamber s Summer Scrubs visited the USA Childre s ad Wome s Hospital. They shadowed doctors i labor ad delivery, radiology, the Neoatal Itesive Care Uit, surgery, pediatrics ad other areas of the hospital based o the studets specific area of iterest. Workforce Developmet Advisory Coucil This ewly-established group is a cooperative idustry effort to produce successful ad diverse job cadidates from the Mobile area. The coucil has four subcommittees busiess ad idustry; educatio; commuity ad social barriers; ad resources.

10 ADVOCACY The Mobile Area Chamber has your back whe it comes to followig local, state ad federal issues that may affect busiess. We kow that havig a balaced, busiess-friedly climate ecourages ecoomic growth. Supporters of the Alabama Historic Tax Credit reewal gathered i Mobile i frot of the Staples-Pake Buildig, uder reovatio thaks to the previous tax credit legislatio. Reewig the tax credit was a sigificat goal of the Chamber s legislative ageda. Top Advocacy Iitiatives The Mobile Area Chamber moitored more tha 1,000 bills itroduced durig the Alabama legislative sessio, i additio to followig local ad federal issues. The Chamber is also a advocate for busiess ews. 1 Legislative Luch Formig the Legislative Ageda with member iput, the Chamber preseted its 2017 pla at this evet i Jauary ad its 2018 pla i December, givig the busiess commuity access to the Mobile-Baldwi legislative delegatio. Combied, there were approximately 300 attedees at the two evets. 2 Represetig Busiess Iterests The Chamber s govermetal affairs team, alog with a cotract lobbyist workig i Motgomery, kept the lies of commuicatio ope with the Mobile- Baldwi state legislative delegatio, egagig them o key legislative issues affectig your busiess ad the local busiess climate. Key legislative victories i 2017 icluded the reewed Alabama Historic Tax Credit Program, previously resposible for 52 projects across Alabama, icludig several i Mobile; icreasig the cap of the Alabama Jobs Act, aimed at keepig the state competitive o job-geeratig projects; ad a bill to allow alcoholic beverages to be ordered ad delivered to your sidewalk table at restaurats with outdoor seatig. I Jauary, the Mobile Area Chamber s Govermetal Affairs Committee preseted its 2017 legislative ageda to members of the Mobile-Baldwi legislative delegatio, Mobile City Coucil ad Mobile Couty Commissio. The ageda is a comprehesive overview of pro-busiess legislatio for which the Chamber is seekig the delegatio s support durig the sessio.
