1 Service Above Self WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR.2014! by DG Julie Phares, Rotary Club of Estes Park-Longs Peak Welcome to the New Year! The beginning of 2014 brings us to the second half of the Rotary year and it gives me great joy to look back and see the distance we have covered together. THANK YOU for being a part of the great journey, welcoming me in to your clubs and making me feel extra special and believing in me as your District Governor. This is the kind of spirit that makes us Rotarians and places us in a class of our own. Needless to say, there are many people out there who would be happy to join us but do not know how. As we head into the last 6 months of this Rotary year I would like all of us to make a real effort to help our club grow in membership. Without membership Rotary will not survive. It is our duty as Rotarians to find members and educate them on what we do and how they can be part of us as we Engage Rotary and Change Lives. A group of Rotarians that needs our attention is made up of the new Rotarians; these members come on board with different expectations and preferences. But most of them have one thing in common; they are eager to serve and make a difference and I appeal to all clubs to engage new members in all avenues of service. Mentor them and help them to learn that Rotary is a responsibility that we cannot afford to take lightly, but also one that guarantees a good amount of qualification to those who are committed to Service Above Self. We live in a dynamic world in which every day comes with new changes. These changes affect Rotary as much as they affect every other sphere of life. Therefore as Rotarians who may have been around for a while we should not be comfortable with only what we already know. There is new knowledge coming regularly and it is incumbent on us to find it and make use of it. Rotary International, the District website, and the District Facebook are regularly updated with new developments. Let us keep ourselves informed in order to remain relevant and effective. During this Rotary Awareness Month it is my hope that every club will take a close look at how much of the above has been done. What strategy has your Rotary club put in place to create Rotary awareness in your community and how effective has it been? How many new members have been inducted into your Rotary club this year and what has been done to make them feel comfortable, happy and proud to be Rotarians? How many of them have taken part in the different training opportunities available, and how have these trainings impacted their understanding of Rotary? My dear Rotarians, let us Make Your Own Kind of Music not only by word of mouth, but also by the way we conduct our business. Our communities should not only know us by what we tell them, but also by what we do. We should not stop at reciting the Four Way Test but also live by it. So I challenge each one of you as we start out in As Rotarians, let everybody see us Doing Good in the World by Engaging Rotary to Change Lives. Yours in Rotary, DG Julie Rotary Awareness is promoted in January but Rotary Awareness is a constant challenge. Public Relations is not just the job of the designated chairman and committee. Every Rotarian represents Rotary, and it s the job of every dedicated Rotarian to Create Rotary Awareness. 2 P a g e 2 BARBARA REDDER NAMED DISTRICT 5440 GOVERNOR Don and Barbara Redder pose briefly during their attendance at the Rotary International Convention in Lisbon, Portugal last June. Assistant Governor Barbara Redder from the Rotary Club of Casper Five Trails has been named District Governor Nominee Designate according to Nominating Committee Chair and Past District Governor Stuart Palmer. Interviews for the position were held in Cheyenne on Saturday, December 7 th. Her term as district governor will begin on July 1, Redder joined the Rotary Club of Gillette in 2002 and served as president in She became Assistant Governor for the two Gillette clubs, along with clubs in Sheridan, Buffalo and Ranchester-Dayton in She and her husband Don moved to Casper in 2011 where she now serves as the Assistant Governor for the Douglas, Rawlins and the three Casper clubs. She assumed the role of Co-District Trainer with current District Governor Elect Phil Murphy in 2011 and holds the District Trainer position now. Redder was honored at the recent district conference in Steamboat Springs as Rotarian of the Year. She is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Bequest Society. Redder graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business from the University of Wyoming in 1982 and has been in the title insurance business since then working in Cody, Wheatland and Gillette before assuming the position as Wyoming Production Center Manager at First American Title Company in Casper. Redder has twice served as president of the Wyoming Land Title Association. When I attended a District Resource Leaders conference several years ago in Albuquerque a past Rotary International Director urged us to find our passion in Rotary and follow it she said. My passion is interacting with Rotarians and helping to inspire the Rotary passion in them! Redder has found ways to reach her fellow Rotarians in the district through training programs at the annual President Elect Training Seminar (PETS), Rotary Leadership Institute classes, district assemblies and the annual district conference. When District Governor Julie Phares was notified of the selection of Redder as DGND she said Barb Redder is going to be an outstanding leader for our Rotary District. She has the wisdom, knowledge, and leadership skills to make a great leader, but what Barb has to offer the Rotarians in our District is her passion for Rotary and how she truly cares about everyone. Redder will begin a concentrated training program leading to her year as district governor when she and her husband Don join her classmates from 21 other districts at the 2014 Zone Institute in Westminster, Colorado in September. She also joins the District 5440 Executive Committee as district governor nominee in July, She will follow District Governor Elect Phil Murphy from the Fort Collins breakfast club ( ) and District Governor Nominee Ken Small ( ) from the Rotary Club of Jackson Hole.

3 P a g e 3 JOHNSTOWN-MILLIKEN ROTARY CLUB ANNUAL CHRISTMAS WREATH FUNDRAISER The Johnstown-Milliken Rotary Club has raised funds from Christmas wreath sales for somewhere between 15 and 20 years. The year 2013 was not much different, just newer Club members and some new customers. Jim Lutey, Chairperson of the fundraiser, said This fundraiser is the Club's signature fundraiser in the community. Customers have been on Rotarian's calling lists for many years. They are eager to buy a wreath or centerpiece from the Club because it helps support local community projects. In 2013, the Club raised $1500 that will help support local projects such as the Student of the Month and Year Program, dictionaries to 3 rd graders, and other literacy projects. Club members (L. to R.) 5 P a g e 5 RI PRESIDENT RON BURTON ANNOUNCES NEW ROTARY CLUB CENTRAL AWARD! Rotary Club Central is a relatively new online goal setting tool that helps clubs set goals and keep track of their progress and achievements throughout the year. Rotarians can sign up today for their own member profile on rotary.org/myrotary and encourage your club members to do the same. By logging in to My Rotary and clicking on My Club Snapshot any club member can see how many Rotary Club Central goals the club has already set. Every club that sets at least 15 goals or more in Rotary Club Central by 15 March 2014 will receive an award. Actual certificates for all award winning clubs will be printed and sent to District Governors in early May. RI ANNOUNCES POLIO NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION DAY! The purpose of this correspondence is to announce our trip to India to participate in the February, 2014 polio National Immunization Days (NID). Attached is a document that provides specific information about the trip, including a means of registering for the program. Please feel free to share this information with the Rotarians and clubs in your District as soon as possible as we have a limited amount of space and expect this trip to be filled within the next week or two. Since January 2011, there has been only ONE new confirmed case of polio in India. In 2012, India was removed from the list of polio endemic countries. We are getting remarkably close to eradicating polio globally. Therefore, this might be one of the last opportunities we will have to organize a trip to India to participate in polio NID activities. This trip offers you and the Rotarians in your club and District an extraordinary opportunity to have an experience of a life time. The following summarizes the key trip information: Our program will travel to Delhi, India, where we will participate in the polio NID activities and attend the Polio Conclave. This trip also includes travel to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, and Jaipur to visit the famous Rotary Jaipur Limb factory, and enjoy this extraordinary city. Date of Departure: Friday, February 14, 2014 Date of Return: Tuesday, February 25, 2014 Per Person Cost, based on double occupancy: $2,299. This price does not include international, roundtrip airfare or Indian visa fees. However, it does include hotels, transfers, the Polio Conclave and other Rotary events, participation in the NID activities, most meals, sightseeing, English speaking guide and other items as stated in the attached document. For complete details download 2014 Polio Immunization Trip brochure.

7 P a g e ROTARY DISTRICT 5440 SCHOLARSHIPS The purpose of District 5440 Scholarship Program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as, for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries. (These scholarships replace the Ambassadorial Scholarship that is no longer offered by The Rotary Foundation.) How are these scholarships made possible? These scholarships are made possible by the generous contributions of District 5440 Rotarians which represents their continued faith that the students who are scholars today will be tomorrow s community and world leaders bettering the life of mankind. Where do I get more information, and how do I apply? For more information, and to acquire an application and a copy of the required District 5440 Terms and Conditions, please contact the Study Abroad Program at CSU, UNC or UW. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I though he was upset at the fact that I was a bite late, but he mad no comment on it. Conversation wasn t flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn t say much. I asked him what was wrong; said, Nothing I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn t upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can t explain his behavior. I don t know why he didn t say, I love you, too. When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep; I cried. I don t know what to do. I m almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster Husband s Diary; A two-foot putt.who the hell misses a two--foot putt?!
