1 A Guide to Available Local s Complete with Application Deadlines & Eligibility Requirements & Instructions Presented by Hanover Women s Club Juniors

2 LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP CHECKLIST "TO DO" Log on to to download and print the local scholarship booklet. This is located under the high school guidance section of the website Read the scholarship book carefully with your parents. Select the scholarships you are eligible for. Remember, you can apply to as many scholarships as you like. Write down the deadlines for each scholarship: Make sure you do not miss the deadline dates- this is VERY important! Log on to your Naviance account at and click on " List" to view all the scholarships listed in the scholarship booklet as well as additional scholarships Download the applications for each scholarship you wish to apply to and print. Remember, there is ONE application for all Section 1 Category A scholarships and ONE application for all Section 1 Category B scholarships. For Section 2, there are individual applications for each scholarship. There are no applications for Section 3- recipients are chosen based on criteria in a questionnaire you will complete before scholarships are awarded. Ask in the Guidance Office about any scholarship applications that are not available through Naviance. Fill out the scholarship applications and write any additional essays Log on to your Naviance account at to request your transcript and counselor/teacher recommendation (s). Click on the tab for "Colleges." Under "Resources" click on "Transcripts." Then click on "Request a transcript for scholarship or athletics." Enter in the name of the scholarship/address and scroll down. Click "Request Transcript." If your teacher(s) used Naviance for your college recommendations, those letters will be sent automatically with your Term 2 transcript and counselor letter of recommendation. Otherwise, please provide your teacher(s) with a stamped and addressed envelope for mailing. Mail your scholarship applications to the correct addresses provided in the scholarship booklet. 3 Hanover Woman s Club, Juniors P.O. Box 151 Hanover, Massachusetts The Hanover Woman s Club, Juniors is pleased to present its annual Hanover Booklet. This booklet is compiled by its members and the Hanover High School Guidance Department for distribution to graduating seniors residing in Hanover. Each year many local groups and organizations award scholarship assistance to Hanover students through the Hanover program. This booklet contains a list of these scholarships and their sponsoring organization. Students who wish to apply should read the scholarship descriptions and note the requirements to determine their qualifications. The Hanover Woman s Club, Juniors wishes to thank Marie Martucci of the Hanover High School Guidance Department. We hope you find this booklet helpful. The scholarships have been organized according to their respective application processes. If you have any questions, please contact your guidance department. 4 HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT WOMEN S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP HANDBOOK INTRODUCTION Be sure to share this scholarship handbook with your family. They will help you decide which scholarships to apply for, and will welcome any assistance they might receive in paying for your post-secondary education. 1. Read the booklet carefully to understand the eligibility requirements and deadlines for each scholarship. 2. Most scholarship applications can be obtained online through your Naviance Account. To request transcripts, log on to Naviance, Family Connections and follow the same procedure you used to request college transcripts. 3. You will be responsible for knowing and keeping track of the application deadlines, as well as for mailing your application. The Guidance Office will mail your transcript and counselor letter of recommendation. The deadline for requesting transcripts through your Naviance account is April 8, If additional recommendations are needed, provide each selected teacher or coach with a stamped, addressed envelope for mailing. Please ask teachers for recommendations early so they can plan their time to meet various and potentially numerous deadlines. 5. A copy of the scholarship booklet will be available on line at 6. Hanover residents planning to attend an accredited college for the first time. This scholarship is renewable if a request for renewal and grades are submitted before the deadline. Drew Bates Memorial $300 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: A Hanover High School senior who has lettered in a varsity sport and who had demonstrated a desire to constantly improve academically, athletically and socially. Hanover Permanent, Inc. Eligibility Requirements: Deserving student who plans to further his/her education beyond high school. One who has been active in the community and is of good character. Hanover Permanent, Inc. 7. Matthew & Dana Berger Memorial $325 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: Any Hanover High School student pursuing a field in Music. Hanover Permanent, Inc. 8. Superintendent Clifton E. Bradley Memorial $275 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: Graduating students residing in Hanover. Awarded to students with a preference in the field of education. Hanover Permanent, Inc. 9. Margaret Burns Memorial $700 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: Any graduating student from Hanover High School with a preference in the field of education. Class of 1979 Memorial Eligibility Requirements: To honor any and all of their deceased classmates by paying it forward to a current graduate who is a resident of Hanover, attends Hanover High School, South Shore Vo-Tech, or a private school and who will be attending an accredited 2 0r 4 year school or college. The memorial scholarship till be distributed after the recipient s first semester is completed and grades are released to the Hanover Permanent Fund, Inc. Candidates should demonstrate good character, community involvement and the desire for further education. Applicants are required to submit a one-page essay indicating the reason they want to attend college, what their goals are and an activities resume. Hanover Permanent Fund, Inc. 11. Paul F. Connors Memorial $300 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: Hanover High School student who plans to further his/her education at an associates or bachelor level. Hanover Permanent, Inc. P. O. Culhane Memorial $600 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: Deserving female graduate of Hanover who has been active in the community, has a well rounded co-curricular activities resume, and plans to major in business. Peter Davis Memorial 3 rd of 4 year award of $700 in 2011 Eligibility Requirements: Graduating Hanover High School senior who displays leadership and compassion toward their fellow human beings. Candidates should also show work experience, exceptional grades, especially in English, and a desire to pursue further education in the field of allied health (pre-med, pre-dental, medical research, etc.) This scholarship can be renewed by the recipient for a total of 4 years, but candidates must reapply each year. This is a four-year award to the same applicant as long as she or he remains in a nursing program. NO AWARD WILL BE GIVEN IN THE EVENT THAT THERE IS NOT AN APPLICANT FOR A NURSING PROGRAM. Hanover Permanent, Inc. Eligibility Requirements: Hanover High School Seniors. Students who have participated in a sport at the varsity level for at least 2 years. Must be accepted at an accredited college or university. Hanover Permanent, Inc. One who has lettered in either soccer or tennis and who has demonstrated leadership in the High School community through participation in student council. This applicant must write a 100-word essay titled "Why Becoming an Organ Donor is so important" and attach a "Letter of Acceptance" from the school they are planning to attend. Box 68 April 8, 2011 (781) Eligibility Requirements: To be awarded to a graduating senior from Hanover High School who is (or whose parent is) a registered Democrat. Applicant must attend ONE Democratic Town Committee Meeting, (held the last Wednesday of each month at 8 p.m., Town Hall large hearing room, first floor), AND attend at least TWO HOURS of Annual Town Meeting and TWO HOURS of Annual Town Election as an observer. The applicant must sign-in with the Board of Registrars at these events and state that they are fulfilling a scholarship requirement, and must make their presence known at the Town Committee Meeting. The applicant must then submit a 100-word or longer essay describing their observations and the significance of the proceedings they witnessed. Return application to Chairperson by mail or in person. Hanover Girl Scouts Service Unit $250 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: to be awarded to a graduating female student who is currently or was formerly a member of a Hanover Girl Scout troop. Preference will be given to those students that were long time participants in scouting in Hanover. In addition to the application please submit a one page response to one of the following prompts: (1) Describe your overall experience as a Girl Scout. How have you personally benefited from Girl Scouting? (2) Explain one GS service project that you participated in that was meaningful to you. Describe your role and who benefited from the project. At least 1, but no more than 3 letters of recommendation are required. If you are currently a Girl Scout we encourage you to please ask your troop leaders to write a brief letter recommending you for this scholarship. Applicant must submit a typewritten essay of 2 to 3 pages based on an INTERVIEW by the applicant of a person who has first-hand knowledge of a historical event: OR AN INTERVIEW by the applicant of a person who has documents or memorabilia relating to an earlier historical event experienced by someone else (especially the Civil War or earlier). Historical events may include (but are not limited to) a War: a Catastrophe or Weather-Related event: a Civil Rights event: a Political event: or any other event of historical interest. Hanover Newcomers Club Two $500 each awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: to be given to a graduating female student of Hanover High School who intends to pursue studies in the field of education. There is no GPA requirement, but it will be taken into consideration. Preference will go to those students who can demonstrate involvement with children or peers throughout their high school years through babysitting, tutoring, camp counseling or other appropriate work with children. In addition to the application, please submit a one-page essay answering one of the following questions: (1) Tell us about the one teacher who has had the most influence on your life so far and why or (2) Write about the most valuable lesson you ever learned in school. What made it so useful for you? At least one, but no more than three letters of recommendation are required as well. Application may be obtained at the Guidance Office or by e- mailing the chairperson listed below. Deadline: April 11, 2011 Joanna Dyer 587 Old Town Way hanovernewcomersclub@yahoo.com April 8, Hanover Parents Music Club Three $500 scholarships awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: One scholarship will be awarded to a current senior attending Hanover High School continuing post-high school education with a major or minor in Music Education, Music Theory/Composition, Music Therapy, Music Theater, Music Business, Music History, Music Management and Merchandising, Music Pedagogy, Music Performance, Musicology and Ethnomusicology or Applied Music, or a student who demonstrates an interest in pursuing course work in music. A second scholarship will be awarded to a current senior attending Hanover High School who was a member of the High School band for at least 3 years, attended band camp for at least 3 years, marched in the parades with the Band, performed with the Band at football games, performed in the Concert Band, and performed at school sponsored activities and functions.. A third scholarship will be awarded to a current senior attending Hanover High School who was a member of the High School Chorus, VOX, or Chorale for at least 3 years, performed at school sponsored activities and functions, and performed in concerts. Applicant s family must be an official dues-paying member of the Hanover Parents Music Club. Applicants must meet the criteria listed for each scholarship. Hanover Parent Teachers Association $250 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: Hanover High School senior who is the child of a present or *former PTA board member and who is continuing his/her education. Selection based upon academic achievement and school/community contributions. Application should be returned to Chairperson by mail. Board members are those who have served as officers or committee members.* 46. Hanover PTA Business/Technology $250 awarded in Hanover PTA History/Social Sciences $250 awarded in Hanover PTA Liberal Arts/Language $250 awarded in 2010 Eligibility Requirements: Hanover High School senior who is continuing his/her education in the field of business and/or technology. Selection based on overall achievement and the ability of the applicant to demonstrate a special interest in one of these areas during his/her high school career. Return to Chairperson by mail. Rockland Trust employees and their relatives are not eligible. Applicants must be entering college for the first time, enrolled as full-time students (as defined by the accredited educational institution at which the applicants have enrolled) and in an undergraduate course of study that offers courses beyond the high school level. Enrollment at only accredited colleges, universities and community colleges will be considered. The scholarship is available only in the first semester of study.
