1 Study Dear friends and colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, When I took office some eight months ago, I did not know what I was in for. I don t think that half a year ago anybody would have predicted the ousting of long-time president Mubarak and the revolution that followed 25 January. as a country, its people and society and certainly also its universities and research institutions have undergone tremendous change since then and are still in the process of transformation. The revolution is still ongoing however, nobody knows yet which destination the ian revolutionary journey is finally arriving at. In these both difficult and exciting times, Germany and the DAAD will continue to work very closely with its ian partners. In fact, it is most likely that the staunch support for, its universities and scholars will be further increased and intensified in the coming weeks and months. To name but one example, the DAAD will be able to offer more scholarships for young leaders and experts in the field of Public Policy and Good Governance ( cairo.daad.de/ppgg, see also article in this newsletter) thanks to an increased budget provided by the German Foreign Office. Furthermore the DAAD is providing a platform to analyse the ongoing changes and assess the perspectives of political transition in by a series of debates, called Cairo Talks on Transition and Change (CTTC) which we are organising with our partners from the Freie Universität Berlin and the Orient Institut Beirut. Please watch out for information about the next CTTC on our website. The next event in the series is scheduled for the 9 May and will reflect on the role of the military in the ongoing revolution. Best wishes, Dr. Michael Harms Photo credits: Lilian Wagdi, jpg

2 Study New Study Programme Public Policy and Good Governance In cooperation with a range of prestigious German universities, the DAAD is offering a new scholarship programme called Public Policy and Good Governance. In view of the ian revolution and the need for profoundly educated change agents, funds for ian candidates have been increased significantly. The programme is designed to qualify future leaders in Politics, Law, Economics and Administration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them in academic, yet practice-oriented Master courses for their professional life. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals. What does the package include? The scholarships are for two-year Master courses (in some cases one-year courses) at a range of eight carefully selected PPGG courses at prestigious German institutions of Higher Education. The majority of these courses are taught in English. The scholarship holders will be offered special tutoring at their host institutions. Furthermore, there is the opportunity of networking events with participants in other PPGG courses. Regardless of the language of instruction, all scholars will receive intensive German language training prior to their studies. 2

3 Study How much is the scholarship? DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 EUR. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance. 13 Study Studying Next Study Information Day to be held in November 2011! With its five German Schools DEO (Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule, Cairo), DSB (Deutsche Schule der Boromäerinnen, Alexandria and Cairo), Europaschule and Beverly Hills School has a big number of graduates ( Abiturienten ) who are highly qualified and very interested to study at German Universities. Since 2007 the DAAD Cairo Office organizes an annual Study Information Day to reach these graduates in order to provide them with all information about studying and living and to support and encourage them in their decision to study abroad. The pupils are offered the opportunity to get directly in touch with representatives from different fields of study who are sharing their knowledge and experiences. German universities such as FU Berlin and Philipps-Universität Marburg, introduce themselves in presentations and with information booths. Last year s Study Information Day took place at the premises of the DEO and was visited by around 350 pupils of the 11 th and 12 th grades. The event met with great success and proved the high demand of information about study opportunities. In order to meet these demands, the DAAD Cairo Office is organizing the 5 th Study Information Day to be held in November German universities and institutions are very welcome to participate in the event.
