This short guide aims to provide relevant information about studying at our School as an Erasmus student and to help you make decisions regarding the selection of courses and recognition by your home University. The School of Primary Education The School of Primary Education operated for the first time in the academic year and along with the School of Early Childhood Education constitutes the Faculty of Education at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Aims and Philosophy of the Programme of Studies The School of Primary Education promotes high quality teaching and aims at shaping teachers with democratic conscience, teachers who are opposed to any racist or sexist rationale and any kind of social discrimination. It offers a program of study for teacher education leading to a Bachelor s degree in Primary Education and Postgraduate programs (Master s Degree Programme in Education) in the following specialty areas: Society, Education, and Pedagody Teaching of Language and Literature Didactics of Science and Mathematics In order to be informed on the Faculty Members research activities, our Research Centres and Labs as well as Master and Doctoral Degrees in Educational Studies you can consult our online guide or the Academic Advisors / ECTS Coordinators. The undergraduate program aims at moulding teachers who face positively the transformation of education towards forming a society governed by the principles of Justice, Democracy, Freedom and Equality; teachers who respect the pluralism of various theoretical views and practices in education; educators who know, understand and are able to use pedagogical, psychological, sociological and philosophical theories daily, as well as the different teaching approaches in order to teach subjects that refer to the aims, content and teaching methods of each subject; teachers with substantial humanitarian culture in the sense of respect for and understanding of nature and the 1
2 various cultures as well as their constant active participation and intervention in matters of public interest. During the first two years students attend courses of general phenomena and issues and during the third and the fourth year of their studies they work with the didactics/pedagogy of the courses and the connection of pedagogical theory and practice. Participation in the Practicum is mandatory and takes place in various forms and semesters. A large number of undergraduate courses are lab oriented (educational technology, experimental teaching of sciences, pedagogical use of ICT etc). Planning your studies in the School of Primary Education, AUTH Before you fill in your Learning Agreement you should consult the list of available courses for Incoming Erasmus students that are available at the end of this guide. In case at the time you start planning your studies (usually one semester earlier), the final schedule of subject oriented courses for the coming semester is not yet available, you are advised to contact the Academic Advisor/ECTS Coordinator for Incoming Erasmus Students who may be able to send you a provisional copy of the schedule. If you are interested to explore other Departments of AUTH (Humanities) and more options of studying, you are advised to contact both these Departments as well as the Erasmus Office, in order to be sure about the prerequisites and availability of such a combination of courses. When finalizing your learning agreement, you need to take into consideration that the School of Primary Education adapts the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), followed by the majority of European Universities. This system is important for the academic recognition of the courses by your home University. In most cases, each undergraduate course offered by our School amounts to 5 ECTS. It is important that you keep in mind that all courses offered by the School of Primary Education are currently taught in the Greek language. Furthermore, it is possible for you to take Greek Language lessons while you are here and earn ECTS credit for the course. For information on how to apply, please contact The School of Modern Greek Language at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki or the Erasmus Office erasmusincoming@auth.gr. As an Erasmus student, it is also possible to study here without speaking Greek. In this case, the English language is used for communication through independent study arranged by the instructors for several courses indicated below, offered by the School of Primary Education. Before the selection of courses you are warmly advised to contact the relevant faculty members in order to have an in-person description of the course as well as of your duties. Our approved Learning Agreement stands as a preliminary confirmation from your home University that you have English language knowledge up to European Language Framework level B2 or higher. Even if you have such a certification, you need to consider whether you can operate adequately in the English language in order 2
3 to fulfill your academic obligations through the Erasmus scheme. In all cases, you are expected to seek advice from the academic advisor of the sending University regarding recognition of the chosen courses. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the School of Primary Education cannot accept responsibility for recognition of any of its courses by your home University. Academic calendar Erasmus students are expected to be informed about the academic calendar in order to plan for their arrival in Greece. Winter Semester Registration week Spring Semester Commencement of lectures End of lectures Holidays (Christmas & Easter) Christmas: Easter: Exams Summer Holidays July & August: specific dates to be announced Public holidays October 26 th & 28th November 17th January 30th February 15-19th March 25 th May 1 st May 28th Registration week and Commencement of lectures Registration begins one week before classes start. It is important that you arrive in Greece early this week in order to visit the Mobility Support Office, meet the Academic Advisor for incoming Erasmus students of the School of Primary Education and arrange for your registration in the courses. Lessons begin usually late September (Winter Semester) and early February (Spring Semester). Please make sure to inform your instructors in each course about your Erasmus student status from the first week of lessons, in order to receive accurate information on attending classes, special seminars, projects & activities etc. Course selection The University sets a period within which you may add or withdraw from courses. You may take advantage of this period to change your courses in case you encountered difficulties with some courses or you changed your mind about your initial registration decisions. If you decide to withdraw from a course, you need to inform the School of Primary Education and the Mobility Support Office about your decision, and submit the Change of Learning Agreement to be signed b all parties. Exams The University sets the exams period for each semester. You are advised to contact your instructors in advance to discuss the details of your final assessment in each course. 3
4 Liaising with the Academic Advisor and the Mobility Support Office The School of Primary Education has appointed two Academic Advisors for incoming Erasmus students who will be supporting you throughout your studies. You are strongly encouraged to contact them when you start thinking about preparing your learning agreement and upon your arrival in Aristotle University Thessaloniki.
