BOB FRANKSTON (S 73-M 77-SM 03-F 11) has been working with computers since he first learned to program His Consumer Electronics background goes back to his childhood with a father who manufactured consumer electronics products. He has been using software to create products and services since he was in high school. Bob attended MIT; he used the opportunity to broaden his education beyond computing to include cognitive psychology, business, clinical decision making and more. He also worked to make computing more available to students. This theme of giving people access to the power of technology rather than just giving narrow solutions has been the hallmark of his career. He was fortunate to discover computing as it happened and to have had the opportunity share his passion and play a role in creating today s PC industry. Technical and Professional Experience: Bob s professional career started in 1966 on Wall St at White-Weld where he helped to create one of the first, if not the first online financial services. He has been online ever since. At MIT (BS Math, BS CS 1970, Masters and Engineers in CS and EE in 1974) he worked on the Multics project and did his thesis on providing services on an information utility. He received the William L Steward Jr award for co-founding an organization that gave students access to computing for their own projects. In 1979, with his friend Dan Bricklin, Bob wrote VisiCalc, the first electronic spreadsheet. Later at Lotus Development he created Lotus Express. At Microsoft he worked to shift the role of the Internet in our lives by giving people control over their own connectivity, AKA home networking. Bob is a fellow of the IEEE, ACM, and the Computer History Museum. More:

5 IEEE Accomplishments: Bob has been a member of the IEEE since 1973 and is a Fellow and a Distinguished Lecturer. He writes the Bits Versus Electrons in the IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine where he brings his software perspective to an industry whose roots lie in creating value using hardware. He has been involved with the CE Society from when he first spoke at the first ISCE in 1997 has been keynote speaker at a number of CE Society conferences as well as a lecturer. He has worked on the Technical Program committee of a number of CE Society conferences, helped as an international advisor, and supported CE conferences in general. He is a founder of the Boston Chapter of the CE Society. Statement: The CE Society has a special role in the IEEE as it transitions from a society focused on technology to one in which the technology is a resource and users (AKA consumers) are increasingly able to craft their own solutions and create their own value. Navigating this change requires an understanding of the interplay of technology, business, economics and people (not just consumers). Today s Internet is one face of this change but as an example of a way to use available resource and to the extent it is not a provided service. To accomplish this the society and, for that matter, the organization as a whole, has a challenge in getting ahead of this change rather than looking inward. The CE Society is the face of this change as the technology becomes a tool rather than staying hidden within products. It should provide the context for the IEEE as a whole. NAHUM D. GERSHON (M 88-SM 93) has been a member of the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society Board of Governors (AdCom) in and is a Senior Principal Scientist at the MITRE Corporation. SCOTT LINFOOT (S 98-M 03-SM 09) Born in the UK, I attended The University of Reading where I received my BEng (Engineering Bachelors) in Electronic Engineering. Following on, I remained at The University of Reading to read my Ph.D., again, in Electronic Engineering which I successfully defended in I received my first Academic post at The University of Reading where I remained until In 2006, I joined the Engineering School at De Montfort University where I received promotion to Principle Lecturer the highest non-professorial position in a British University. In 2008, I formed my own company, MediaTag, where I eventually held the position of CEO. In 2013, I started my own consultancy company where I offer advice on solutions architecture, primarily in the Big Data Space. My professional background and expertise is very broad, starting with Digital Television and spectrum optimisation then moving to Digital Television and full supply chain representation and eventually, media production asset management and analytics. I have been an active member of the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society for over 16 years. I started as a Technical Program Committee member for the International Symposium on Consumer Electronics (ISCE) and in 2004, was Technical Chair for the ISCE held in the UK. I then joined the TPC for the International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE) Las Vegas and have been track chair on many occasions. More recently, I have joined the TPC of the GCCE and ICCE Berlin as an active participant at all conferences. From , I was the UK and Republic of Ireland CE Chapter Co-Founder and Vice President and then Chapter Chair from I am still on the chapter committee. In 2007, I was elected to the CE Society Administrative Committee (Now Board of Governors (BoG)) where I held the role of Society Secretary and Chair of Governance and ran a project to update society documents starting with the Operations Manual and then society Constitution. From , I held the position of Treasurer of the CE BoG where I was responsible for preparation, negotiation and management of the society budget. I am an active, vocal participant of the BoG with a drive to improve member benefits throughout the whole of the IEEE. Statement: We are members of one of the smaller societies of the IEEE but I strongly feel that this is misleading. Consumer Electronics covers virtually all aspects of engineering which means that we should be one of the largest societies. My main observation is that IEEE members cannot easily see the value proposition in being a CE member while volunteers know what the society can offer. It is my intention over the next three years to make sure that there are a number of tangible benefits that can be bought to the CE Member. I am currently driving to get more professional courses run through the society so that members can get accreditation for other professional bodies (such as Scrum, TOGAF, Oracle, Microsoft, etc) through subsidised professional training. I am also keen to promote more social networking events. We try to promote these at conferences and there is always positive feedback. I feel that this should continue as engineering should not be just work, work, work.

9 Finally, I want to work with the membership to find out where we feel that technologies will lead us in the future. This has already started with my work with the Future Directions Committee which I am already a member. I have a lot of work to do over the next three years and I hope that my continued involvement with the society BoG will enable me to continue with these projects.
