6 What We May Collaborate On Standards Education Program Only a small portion of engineers will participate in standards development in their careers. But standards impact many aspects of business everyday and many engineers will touch a standard in their work. So engineers are more valuable to company if they understands some basic concepts about standards. 8 Standards MOOC: Innovation and Competition: Succeeding through Global Standards Offers a practitioners view of standards and standards development Aimed at graduate-level students and educators of engineering, technology, and computing (ETC), business, economics, and law. Delivered over the course of six weeks Provides a full survey of fundamental standardization themes: Introduction to standards and history, basic concepts and classifications, along with crucial topics like innovation, global markets, trade, implementation, conformity assessment, regulation, intellectual property, motivating factors in standards development, etc. Available on mobile and non-mobile devices. Students can audit the course at no charge or pursue a Certificate track for a reasonable fee. If a university would like to run the Standards MOOC as part of a course for paid college credit, the IEEE will offer a license to the university in order to make that possible. 8

16 IEEE Standards Education: Grants The SEC offers grants of US $500 for students (per project) and US $300 for faculty mentors to help complete senior, undergraduate or graduate projects. Projects may be for design, capstone, development or research in which an industry technical standard(s) was applied to complete the project. For students participating in the grant program, it is an excellent way to receive extra funding for student projects, to learn about technical standards necessary for their career development, and to have their final papers peer-reviewed by an IEEE committee. Upon completion of project student submit a Final Student Application Paper. If paper is accepted it is published to the Student Application Papers website. 16

24 IEEE Future Directions Initiatives IEEE Future Directions, (FDC) a committee of the Technical Activities Board, identifies technologies as primary focus areas. The FDC initiates and then incubates IEEE wide initiatives involving all the IEEE operating units. The FDC: Anticipates and determines the direction of existing, new, and emerging technologies and related issues, and spearheads their investigation and development by IEEE. Drives initiatives to maturity within the IEEE infrastructure. The CSD provides guidance on: Recognizing software system designs that are likely vulnerable to compromise. Designing and building software systems with strong, identifiable security properties.
