1 North Dakota FFA Foundation, Inc. PO Box 6022 Bismarck, ND Basin Ave Bismarck, ND Supporting the Leadership Opportunities and Activities of the North Dakota FFA and Agriculture Education Beth Bakke Stenehjem, Executive Director Newsletter of the North Dakota FFA Foundation, Inc Summer Issue Volume 16, Issue 2 June 2016 Introducing the Stars Over North Dakota at the 87th State Convention Star Farmer Katelyn Horner, Napoleon Katelyn Jo Horner is a member of the Napoleon FFA Chapter and the daughter of Jody and Dawn Horner. She credits her father and grandfather for influencing her and teaching her about the skills necessary to be a successful agriculturalist. She started her herd at the age of three with a cow that was gifted to her by her father. She now has over 20 commercial cows, several purebred South Devon heifers, and has expanded her operation to include feeders. In addition to her livestock, Katelyn has diversified her operation by renting 85 acres and planting corn. Her skill set is vast and includes making livestock and crop production management decisions and working as an assistant accountant for the Dakota Frontier Cooperative in Napoleon. Katelyn will pursue a degree in farm/ranch management from Bismarck State College this fall and plans to return to the family farm. Her advisor is Brian Schneider. Star in Agrisbusiness Joshua Geinert, Edgeley-Kulm Geinert Gardens was the idea of Joshua Geinert during his freshman year. Josh found himself as part of the newly established Edgeley-Kulm FFA Chapter under the direction of advisor Cameron Young. It was Mr. Young s introduction of supervised agricultural experiences (SAE) that got Josh thinking. And all this thinking has paid off. Josh s SAE consists of selling home-grown produce to a local farmers market and adding 21 additional clients through community supported ag (CSA) contracts. Josh s CSA clients look forward to a basket of fresh produce for 20 consecutive weeks during the growing and harvesting season. But it s not just his growth of and delivery of the produce that s most impressive, Josh s extensive research into the varieties and production methods he uses to grow his produce guarantees his market and CSA clients a higher quality and more flavorful product than can be found in most supermarkets. Josh utilizes two high tunnel greenhouses to start his produce earlier in the season and unique planting and pest management practices to ensure higher yields. He also has utilized resources like the ND FFA Foundation SAE grants and grants from the NRCS to expand his business. Josh is the son of Tim and Joanne Geinert. He will attend NDSU next fall to major in agricultural education and is anxious to share his experiences with his future students. Star in Agricultural Placement Stetson Ellingson, Mandan A Jack of all trades, or at least all things related to cattle production, is the best way to describe Stetson Ellingson. Stetson is the son of Chad and Julie Ellingson of St. Anthony. His skills at Ellingson Angus run from fencing and haying to management of all aspects of their 400 plus purebred Angus operation. From a very young age, said Stetson, I have dedicated myself to being a devoted student of ranching, the Angus breed, the cattle industry, and the agriculture industry as a whole. This dedication has earned Stetson a wide array of responsibilities such as management of herd health, genetic selection, rotational grazing schemes, and filing the proper registration paperwork. Stetson has all the background he ll need to fulfill his dream to manage and market registered seed stock cattle in the future. Stetson is a member of the Mandan FFA Chapter. His advisors are Heidi Brandt and Tanasha Wanner. Stetson plans to attend Bismarck State College in the fall and then fulfill his dream to own a registered seed stock herd of his own. Star in Agriscience Emma Maddock, Kindred Emma Maddock s high school activities are as diverse as her agriscience experiments. Her involvement in sports, drama, and acting as the senior editor of her school newspaper will enhance her future in agricultural communications. These experiences, combined with her understanding of the scientific method and the agriculture industry, will help her better communicate with the vast experiences of her readers. From the arts to production agriculture, Emma will be able to advocate for agriculture in unique ways. Emma is currently conducting her fourth agriscience experiment. Her first two experiments determined methods to prolong the vase life of cut flowers. In 2013 she earned runner-up at the National FFA Agriscience Fair for this work. Among her proudest moments was visiting with a floral shop owner during the open house who was excited to take Emma s ideas back and practice them in her own shop. This experience gave real world application and validity to my work, said Emma. She also conducted a study on erosion and eutrophication prevention, and her current study is on methods to increase fiber digestion for ethanol production. Emma is the daughter of Rob and Tam Maddock and a member of the Kindred FFA Chapter. Her advisors are Brooke Theil and Mitchell Becker. Emma will attend North Dakota State University this fall. I am truly grateful for receiving these funds! This is a picture of my heifer I bought. She is going to be bred here really soon! I am so excited to start my own herd! Thank you so much! - McKayla Jones, Fessenden/ Bowdon It has been 35 years since I taught high school agriculture and served as an FFA chapter advisor. I had the privilege this spring of going out as part of a group to interview the FFA Star applicants for North Dakota. I can tell you that I was impressed with every single FFA member we interviewed. I do recognize these young people were the finalists and represent a high level of achievement in North Dakota FFA. I often hear people criticizing today s youth about work ethics, cell phone use, and communication skills. I strongly suspect our parents had similar criticisms of our generation and probably their parents had the same concerns about them as well. After listening to the strong presentations from these candidates and the high degree of involvement in both FFA and many other school activities, it renewed my faith in the young people who will be replacing us baby boomers in the years to come. I wish all of the sponsors for North Dakota FFA events could have the same opportunity to listen to such a fine group of outstanding young people. Any one of the candidates we interviewed would have been considered an excellent person to win the awards! My congratulations to all of the candidates as well as all of the parents and Agriculture Teachers/ FFA Advisors who work with these fine candidates and all of the other FFA members across the state! Thank you for your hard work and efforts. Mark Holkup, Bismarck State College, Farm Management Instructor Max ND FFA Foundation Mail Bag

15 P A G E 1 5 HESS Provides Curriculum Support & Helps Tell the FFA Story The ND FFA Foundation was honored to be guests of HESS and the ND Petroleum Council at the 2016 Williston Basin Petroleum Conference held at Bismarck s Civic Center May The conference drew thousands from the petroleum and energy sector from across the nation and internationally. In March HESS provided the ND FFA Foundation with a grant of $26,000 to provide environmental science curriculum to two consortiums. Instructors will be trained on the use of these materials this summer. Further demonstrating their commitment to our young people, HESS invited the ND FFA Foundation to host a booth at the conference s trade show. This exposure allowed foundation staff and ND State FFA Officers Brock Saewert and Angela Leier to share with attendees of the conference the diversity of North Dakota s agricultural education curriculum. From construction, welding, electrical and plumbing, to food science and agricultural sales, FFA s roots are deep in production agriculture but our members skills are vast. This diversity makes our students sought after in many work places. Special thanks to HESS for their investment in agricultural education and the North Dakota FFA! Visiting with HESS Vice President, Gerbert Schoonman Brock and Angela conducting interviews during the conference.

Collectively, the three have more than a century of experience, instructing agricultural education. All three will retire this year.
