2 Avenues of Service For years, Rotary s commitment to Service Above Self has been channeled through the Avenues of Service, which form the foundation of club activity. To get started on a project, think broadly about how your club and its members could contribute within each avenue. Club Service: Club service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the smooth functioning of Rotary clubs. Vocational Service: Vocational Service involves club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and they inspire others in the process. Community Service: Community Service is the opportunity Rotary clubs have to implement club projects and activities that improve life in the local community. International Service: International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary s humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to Polio- Plus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries. Youth Services: Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities such as RYLA, Rotaract and Interact club service projects, and creating international understanding with Rotary Youth Exchange. 2

4 District Governor s Message Rotarians of District 6820, It is an honor and a privilege for me to serve this great District as your District Governor. Following the great energetic work of PDG Amanda Fontaine and building on the work and dedication of countless other District Governors and District leaders, this year will go down in Rotary history as the year of Rotary: Making A Difference. Rotary: Making A Difference is more than just our theme this year, it is embedded in Rotary as an organization. Every second of every day, the work of our Rotarians is changing and saving lives around the world. We should all be proud to be part of such a well-respected organization with such compassion. The difference we make is made possible by each of us, through our monetary donations to the Rotary Foundation and contribution in time to these projects. To make history this year, join me and my District Leadership Team as we aim to increase membership and involvement within your club. Increasing membership begins by the simple act of asking a colleague/peer to join your club. With numerous events, projects, and committees (both at club and District level), there are many ways to become more engaged within Rotary: Join by participating in club and District sponsored events and activities Supporting and increasing gifts to the Rotary Foundation Rotarians and their families attending the FUN Multi District Conference in Biloxi at the Beau Rivage Resort Joining our first ever Rotary D6820 Service Trip to Mexico, in the Spring of Partnering with the organization Heart 2 Heart, we will be doing various hands on projects to help change lives. There will be more information and details coming out in the following months. These exciting plans for our clubs and District in are made possible with the participation, help and support of each club and its Rotarians. So, as a fellow Rotarian, I am asking for your participation and support to help make history and for District 6820 to be known as Rotarians: Making A Difference! Sincerely, Bill Walker District 6820 District Governor 70 Brickerton St. Columbus, MS

8 Paul P. Harris - The Founder of Rotary Paul P. Harris ( ) was the founder of Rotary, the world s first and most international service club. He was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on April 19, Paul married Jean Thomson Harris ( ). They had no children. He received the bachelor of physical culture and LL.B degrees from the University of Vermont and the LL.D degree from the University of Iowa. He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in Paul worked as a newspaper reporter, a business teacher, stock company actor, and a cowboy. In 1896, he went to Chicago to practice law. In 1900 during an afterdinner stroll with a professional friend in a residential Chicago neighborhood, Paul was impressed by the fact that his friend stopped at several stores and shops in the neighborhood and introduced him to various tradesmen in their stores. This reminded Paul of his New England village and it occurred to him: Why not have a fellowship composed of businessmen from different occupations, without restriction of politics or religion? He resolved to organize a club that would band together a group of representative business and professional men in friendship and fellowship. In February 1905, Paul Harris formed the first club with three of his law clients - Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant, Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer, and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor. Because the group s meeting locations rotated from one member s place of business to the next, Harris christened his new club Rotary. The second Rotary club was founded in San Francisco in In August 1910, when there were 16 clubs, the National Association of Rotary Clubs was organized. By 1921, the organization was represented on every continent, and in 1922, they adopted the name Rotary International. Paul Harris dream, the Rotary Club, has continued to grow and expand over the years. The burgeoning movement in Asia, and the over 220 clubs in Eastern Europe, are extending Paul Harris s ideals of friendship, community service, education, and peace across the world. 8
