Run in partnership with the Parliamentary Education Office, the delegates spend a lot of time inside Parliament House in areas not usually open to the public. They often have morning tea with the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. They view Question Time and are debriefed by a journalist from the Press Gallery. They learn the difference between a Bill and an Act. They participate in mock Parliamentary debates themselves. They experience the national institutions (War Memorial, Institute of Sport etc) in a way that is more revealing than the usual school excursion can provide. And most importantly, they meet and make friends with young people from all over Australia. Delegates from previous years have said this is one of the highlights of the RAIC program. Applications open in February and close in April. Website: D9700 Directory
30 SCIENCE PROGRAMS NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM (NYSF) Chair Sue Moffatt (Alan King) Orange (hm) National Youth Science Forum provides about ten talented Year 11 students from the District with a two week science odyssey in Canberra or Perth in January prior to Year 12. Selections of the successful applicants are made following interview of the students by the District Committee. Some 150 like-minded students are selected from Rotary Districts all over Australia and overseas to come together for this science program. Selected students have an enthusiasm for a career in science, engineering or technology. National Youth Science Forum is a hands-on experience in which science comes to life and students learn leadership and communication skills and start networking for their future careers. Website: nysf@nysf.edu.au HONEYWELL ENGINEERING SUMMER SCHOOL (HESS) The Honeywell Engineering Summer School is run by the Institute of Engineers and provides students with a week-long practical engineering experience at Universities and engineering sites in Sydney. The Honeywell Engineering Summer School is held in December, with 100 Year 11 students selected from NSW and the ACT. Students gain a better understanding of engineering as a university and career option as well as broadening their horizons and experiencing the interaction with practicing engineers and their peers. Throughout the week-long program, students are introduced to five universities, including University of New South Wales (host university), University of Sydney, University of Western Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, and University of Wollongong. The students are also taken behind the scenes of some major engineering companies and projects to see engineers at work. Registrations usually open at the end of May Website: D9700 Directory
31 SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE Coordinators Forbes John Saleh (Eleanor) Forbes (hm) (wk) Orange Bruce Whiley (Peita) Orange North (hm) Young Frank Lincoln (Diana) Young (hm) Wagga Wagga Trevor Webb (hm) The Science and Engineering Challenge is an outreach program founded by the University of Newcastle in conjunction with Rotary. It aims to address our skills shortage in science and engineering by inspiring young people to study senior Maths, Physics and Chemistry. The Challenge provides students with an exciting day where they compete with other school groups in demanding activities. This gives students an appreciation of the complexities of a career in the science and engineering fields. Typically eight schools per day compete in a Challenge, with each school providing a team of approx 32 students. These teams are divided into eight groups that compete in one or two activities during the day. The fun and hands-on activities involve principles of science, engineering and technology. The concept is to immediately engage students in the activity with a minimum of introduction and theory. Students explore scientific principles for themselves rather than being guided to a predetermined answer. District 9700 has been involved since 2005 and in the Challenge was run at Forbes, Orange, Wagga Wagga and Young. For more information check out the Website: D9700 Directory
32 SCIENCE EXPERIENCE (SE) The Science Experience is a fun three days of science activities for Year 9 and 10 students. Each program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of dedicated scientists. The program takes place in universities at various times of the year.
