3 Background In 1986, the SWSA began collaboration with Zhongshan University in Guangzhou by placing MSW students in the Guangzhou Federation of Women and the Guangzhou Communist Youth Since 1998, the SWSA has already sent a total of 330 social work students in various placement settings in different countries and places, such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Singapore, UK, USA, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Sichuan, Taiwan, India and Japan. 3

4 Objectives of Overseas/Mainland Placement Facilitate Students to: experience and appreciate International Social Work broaden exposure to different cultures and welfare systems gain new life experiences and take up challenges advance professional development engage in international exchange improve language proficiency widen career opportunities 4

5 2018 Overseas Placement Summer Block only BSW : June 4 to Aug 10, 2018, 400 hours (10 weeks) or MSW : *June 4 to Aug 10, 2018, 450 hours (for 10 or 11 weeks of placement duties) *Should work out details with partner agency 5

6 Eligibility of Applicants BSWFT3 and MSWFT1 (as at Sep 2017) Summer Block 2018 and submit application before 21 December, 2017 MSWPT3 (as at Sep 2017) Summer Block 2018 and submit application before 21 December, 2017 MSWPT2 (as at Sep 2017) Apply duration changes of placement (apply for deferment of concurrent placement to summer block placement) Summer Block 2019 and submit application in Dec 2018

17 Application Procedures Indicate your preference in the PMS Complete Form A and invite your preferred teacher to make recommendation on Form B Prepare a personal resume (CV) Submit the Form A and CV to Miss Shirley Yip at General Office on or before December 21, 2017, 5:00pm We will collect Form B directly from teachers 17

22 Assessment Criteria Good language proficiency (English and/or Putonghua) Good learning attitudes and interpersonal skills Maturity and independence Good heath condition (both physically and psychologically) Academic performance (GPA at 3.0 or above will be selected for interview) Sufficient financial support to afford overseas expenses Recommendation from teachers The above listed items are not exhaustive 22

23 Subsidy Granting SWSA will offer fixed subsidy for the successful applicants, it covers part of the expenses of the placement (HK$12,000 for Australia, USA, UK and Canada, HK$6,000 for Taiwan, Singapore, India, Japan and Mainland) 23

25 HSBC Social Work Scholarship Future Skills (Subject to approval) Apply to BSW students only, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and participating in enrichment activities in the overseas countries Applicants are required to complete a separate application form and write an essay on a topic set by HSBC 25

26 HSBC Social Work Scholarship Future Skills (Subject to approval) The value of each scholarship would be HK$12,500 (Asian Countries) and HK$25,000 (Countries outside of Asia) Department head will recommend candidates to HSBC and these nominees would be invited to participate in an interview with representatives of HSBC at the end of April 26

27 HSBC Social Work Scholarship Future Skills (Subject to approval) Awardees of this Scholarship would be invited to share their experience after their return back to Hong Kong (other than Department s requirement) Awardees cannot get the SWSA subsidy and 1978 Alumni support at the same time 27
