5 Page 3 Course organiser - Dr Erin Turner Erin.Turner@bsmhft.nhs.uk Course administrator - Carol Bennett Carol.Bennett@bsmhft.nhs.uk The Birmingham course is held at the Uffculme Centre in Birmingham and runs from September to July. Year 1 training Tuesday morning, Year 2 training Thursday morning Year 3 training Thursday afternoon. The Birmingham Course aims to Enhance knowledge, potential and excellence in psychiatry. The College syllabus is taught in years 1 and 2 whereas year 3 course content is geared more for trainees preparing for higher specialist training. Year 1 covers the history of psychiatry, classification and ethics, general psychiatry and psychology. The basic sciences covered include neuroscience, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, genetics and psychopharmacology. The course is predominantly taught by consultant experts in lecture format. All lecture material is stored on the website. Active learning is encouraged during once monthly small group tutorials which take place in 4 localities-birmingham, Black Country, Coventry and Warwickshire, Hereford and Worcester. Communication skills training is provided with facilitation from simulated patients and individuals with lived experience of mental illness. A component of communication skills training involves trainees being filmed undertaking a simulated consultation. CASC practice is introduced in year 1 in a safe and friendly setting. Year 2 covers Psychotherapy, Forensic, CAMHS, Learning Disabilities, Older Adult, Perinatal, Eating Disorders and Rehabilitation psychiatry. 6 weeks are devoted to critical appraisal workshops to aid trainees preparing for paper B. CASC practice continues, with the introduction of increasingly complex scenarios alongside the use of simulated patients. Year 3 covers topics such as mental health act and safeguarding training, interview skills, physical health, coroner s courts and tribunals. Collaborative learning sessions with mental health nurses and GP trainees are provided. Trainees also have the opportunity of learning through drama, focussing on suicide awareness and prevention. The Birmingham course has a proud history of active service user and carer involvement in planning and developing the course. The course organiser is supported by honorary tutors, specialist trainees with an interest in medical education. Each year elects a trainee rep who is invited to the 6 monthly course board meeting. The website has more information about the team as well as a short video describing the course in more detail. CASC practice videos and podcasts can be accessed through the website.

6 Page 4 Course organiser - Dr. Joanne Barton Joanne.Barton@northstaffs.nhs.uk Course administrator- Lynne Glasby The Keele Cluster Core Psychiatry Programme (CPP) provides training for Core Trainees (CTs) from Staffordshire and Shropshire (North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust and South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust). The course aims to equip CTs with the knowledge they require to be good psychiatrists. A further aim is to support CTs in their preparation for the RCPsych examinations. The course is a modular programme the content of which is based on the RCPsych curriculum. It is delivered in a three year cycle. Year I focuses on basic training whilst Years 2 and 3 cover more specialist aspects. The Core Psychiatry Programme Tutor has overall responsibility for the course but is supported by an administrator. The course is overseen by a course board which meets biannually and includes trainee and patient/carer representation. Each module has a lead (usually a consultant psychiatrist) who is responsible for modular content and organisation. Modules are presented as a series of seminars and the involvement of multidisciplinary colleagues is encouraged. In recent years there has been a move towards the inclusion of more self-directed learning and trainee involvement in the delivery of seminars. Sessions are interactive with opportunity for debate and discussion. Seminar leaders are asked to include some examination revision in their sessions including both theory (e.g. multiple choice questions) and CASC practice. Additional teaching includes exam skills and mock CASC examinations. Communication skills and leadership teaching is delivered across years 1-3. Teaching takes place on Wednesday afternoons at Harplands Hospital in Stoke on Trent. A conference for trainees and trainers is held on an annual basis. The programme includes lectures from invited speakers, workshops and poster presentations. A conference organising committee including trainees is responsible for developing the programme and reviewing abstracts for posters. The course is supported by a website. This hosts all the material relating to the course. Each module is allocated a page and module leads are encouraged to use the website to add extra teaching materials and resources. Trainees register their attendance/absence for sessions through the website and the course administrator manages the programme diary and messaging through the site.

16 Page 14 South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust aims to make a positive difference to the wellbeing of all those who use our mental health, learning disability, children s and specialist healthcare services, their families and carers, and the people in our local community. The Trust has recently received GOOD rating from CQC for its overall services with some services receiving an OUTSTANDING rating. In fact, we are very proud to be one of only four mental health and learning disability trusts nationally to have been declared GOOD across all 5 domains. The Boards of South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (SSSFT) and Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Partnership NHS Trust (SSOTP) have agreed to come together as one organisation from April SSOTP provides community health and adult social care. The merger will lead to better and more joined-up services for patients and communities, with less duplication and fewer delays in the delivery of care. SSSFT provides mental health, learning disability, children s and specialist healthcare services across South Staffordshire and mental health, learning disability and sexual health services in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. We also provide some services, such as in reach and rehabilitation in prisons, on a wider regional and national basis. The Trust currently serves a population of 1.1 million, over geography of 2,200 square miles, with around 3,500 staff. It has a turnover of over 175 million. The Trust Headquarters are at St George s Hospital in Stafford, which has excellent links to the M6 (J13 and J14) and is well served by major rail networks. St George s Hospital comprises inpatient mental health and learning disability facilities. In September 2012, we opened the Redwoods Centre - a brand new, purpose built and state of the art mental health inpatient facility in Shrewsbury. SSSFT has close links with Keele University and has been a Keele University Teaching Trust since What is more, we are very proud that Keele University currently has the largest conversion rate to psychiatry training nationwide. In 2014, the Trust recruited a world renowned Chair of Psychiatry, Professor Athula Sumathipala, and the University has also recruited to honorary senior clinical lecturer roles from amongst our body of consultant psychiatrists. The Trust has a well-developed Research and Innovation Department. The Trust has an excellent record of supporting psychiatry training across a wide range of sub specialties and we have received fantastic results in the most recent GMC National Training Survey, particularly in the areas of Clinical Supervision, Educational Supervision and Workload. We run a well-supported PGME programme on a Monday morning at the Redwoods Centre and on a Thursday afternoon at St George s Hospital. There is also a Balint Group and a high profile National Speaker Programme which trainees are encouraged to attend.
