2012 Annual Report Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE trains medical professionals and provides free high quality medical care for the poor and needy in Cambodia.
Director s Message Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. These are ancient words, written well over 2000 years ago. They speak of a different time and a different people. Yet here in Cambodia these words are alive and speak volumes. They also describe the work of the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE. This annual report is dedicated to the hospital's team of hardworking staff and volunteers. In 16 years of existence, SHCH has delivered 1,203,631 patient consultations, trained over 3,500 medical professionals and opened three additional medical facilities to adapt to Cambodia's growing health care needs. In 2012, the Women's Health Clinic continued to champion its mission to help Cambodian women gain access to high quality health care delivered in a respectful environment regardless of their ability to pay. As the international community recognizes the leaps in progress made in the country's fight against HIV and tuberculosis, we are proud to be partners with both government and nongovernment organizations in helping make these milestones happen. We have seen 2012 as the year where more patient consultations and services have been delivered through the hospital and our affiliated centers than previous years on record. It is through the devotion of our partners, staff and volunteers that this work is possible. Your continued support allows us to speak up, to protect, to defend--on behalf of the poor and needy. Thank you. Don Fetherman Country Director
A Patient Story -- Den Sokhoun Cambodia is home to a multi-billion dollar garment industry. While the economic development has provided hundreds of thousands with jobs, workers continue to fight for better wages and improved working conditions. Over 90% of these workers are young women from different provinces. Working six days a week on 10-hour shifts, a factory worker's wages amount to about $70 a month. Den Sokhoun has been a garment factory worker for years. Feeling pain in her joints and extremities, she was forced to take precious time off from work to find treatment, knowing full well that she may not be able to afford it. From the province of Kampong Cham, Sokhoun traveled almost three hours to the capital of Phnom Penh with her mother to seek help. They found out about the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE. With the help of a motorbike driver, Sokhoun came to the hospital--anxious about her condition and afraid of what it will cost. Doctors found a large tumor growing inside Sokhoun's abdomen. She was taken to surgery where the tumor was found attached to her aorta and removal was too risky. Sokhoun is 23 years old. As a result of her condition, Sokhoun developed dermatomyositis. She suffered from high fever in addition to her joint pains. Dr. Kruy Lim, head of the Internal Medicine Department, followed up and immediately started treatment to ease Sokhoun's discomfort. After being treated at the hospital for 18 days, and with her condition managed by proper medication, Sokhoun got better. Her joint pains also receded. There are great doctors here and the nurses took excellent care of me. Thank you so much. -- Den Sokhoun Doctors found the tumor to be benign. Sokhoun is now back at home with her parents, grateful for her new lease on life. All the professional services rendered, weeks of stay in the hospital, medications administered and surgery were given free of charge. "I think she will live for a long time." -- Dr. Kruy Lim, Medical Director
I am well aware of many great efforts that have been made by a number of organizations to assist my country, but none have had a greater impact than the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE. -- H.E. Sereywath Ek Former Ambassador of Cambodia to the United States 1,203,631 Patient Consultations Since 1996
As a Western volunteer, it s very encouraging to see the tenured Cambodian staff instructing the younger Cambodian doctors. Sustainable healthcare in Cambodia will develop only when knowledge is dispersed from more experienced Cambodian physicians to the less knowledgeable ones, lessening the need for foreign instruction. --Dr. Michael Paling Radiologist from USA Our Mission The SHCH Training program continues to be strongly supported by international volunteers. In 2012, 54 specialists from nine countries contributed to the training and development of SHCH staff as well as medical professionals from all over Cambodia. HMC provided 88,986 outpatient visits and 7,021surgical procedures and consultations in 2012.

When she was released from the hospital, she went home feeling compelled to someday give back. After saving for seven years, Salim returned to donate $1,000 to the hospital.
