RADICAL-7 PULSE OXIMETER WITH SENSOR: $4,440 Katherine Hospital, Operating Theatres/Birthing Suite, NT By shining a light through the baby s finger or toe the oximeter measures the amount of oxygen in their capillaries. This ensures correct and safe oxygen delivery during highly critical times in an effort to prevent damage to organs such as the brain, eyes and lungs. Page 3
4 JAUNDICE DETECTOR: $4,780 EACH 4 needed Bankstown/Lidcombe Hospital, Women s & Children s Services, NSW (1) Longreach Hospital, Maternity Ward, QLD (1) Port Augusta Hospital & Regional Health, Casuarina Ward, SA (1) Royal Darwin Hospital, Women, Children & Youth, NT (1) All babies are checked for jaundice (yellowing of the skin) on a daily basis. This detector is used to help clinicians determine the jaundice levels through the skin without harming the baby. If jaundice is left untreated there is a possibility of cerebral palsy, deafness and/or brain damage. STATSTRIP LACTATE CONNECTIVITY METER: $4,870 Westmead Hospital, Birth Unit, NSW Labour and birth can be very stressful on a new baby and nursing staff have to constantly watch for signs that the baby may not be getting enough oxygen. The best test for assessing a lack of oxygen is lactate (lactic acid). A high lactate at birth is closely linked to developing cerebral palsy and other problems in brain and other neurological function. Westmead currently only have 2 units available for their whole birthing unit and when multiple births happen the medical team could be left short. Immediate readings are vital and these additional units will ensure each birthing room is cable of doing such testing. CONNEX SPOT MONITOR: $4,910 Nepean Hospital, Emergency Department, NSW The Connex Spot Monitor provides vital signs measurement including blood pressure, spot checking, interval monitoring and custom scoring across paediatric patients. It will enable a more accurate assessment to ensure the most appropriate treatment is provided for each child, giving them the very best chance of recovery. EPOC BLOOD ANALYSIS SYSTEM: $12,900 Katherine Hospital, Children s Ward, NT The EPOC Blood analyzer measures blood gas, electrolyte, metabolite and hematocrit in neonates and paediatric patients. Unlike traditional laboratory analysis, the handheld equipment does not require a large blood draw from the patient, which is often difficult and distressing for all parties involved. The hand held device enables the small blood sample to be tested immediately, ensuring that a deteriorating patient s clinical condition is identified expediently. Additionally, blood samples have a propensity to clot and redrawing blood is often required, this device eliminates the distress of blood redraw since analysis of blood occurs immediately, the blood sample does not required transportation to the lab for analysis. TC50 CARDIOGRAPH: $13,000 Gove District Hospital, Specialist Clinic, NT This device, with trolley, allows medical staff to quickly conduct an ECG test if a newborn is suspected to have problems with its heart rhythm. Many patients of Gove District Hospital travel long distances from remote communities, and once there their stay can last longer than ideally required. A new cardiograph will allow these patients to receive fast and efficient diagnostic results. INTELLIVUE MX450 MONITOR WITH X2 MODULE: $15,860 EACH Mount Isa Base Hospital, Paediatric Unit, QLD This monitor can record and display a sick child s pulse/heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate and oxygen levels.
