The focus of education is on multi-disciplinary health issues with the particular focus on oral-systemic links with major Australian health issues - heart disease, stroke, diabetes. assist Regional and Remote members in obtaining affordable, high quality CPD and CPE within a close proximity to their residence. reduce the burden of cost and improve access to quality CPD for R&R Dental Allied Health Professionals. enhance and develop greater team approach to patient care and multi-disciplinary health promotion with the particular focus on oral-systemic links in health and disease. 3 Regional Road Shows in 2013 at Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns; contracted professionals (academics, skilled trainers) presenting 3 x 3 hour seminars in 3 different rural and/or remote locations within Queensland on a yearly basis. The mode of communication is face-to-face with interactive feedback opportunities available throughout the presentation. The presentation may also include hands on training (for example, blood pressure taking, blood sugar sample taking and analysis, saliva testing and dietary analysis) that are relevant to the specific areas of interest. BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY, VICTORIA ID Round 4 20 ORGANISATION Southern Grampians & Glenelg Primary Care Partnership inter-professional learning PROJECT DURATION 14 February to 18 May 2013 TARGET AUDIENCE health promotion practitioners, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, diabetes educators, dental & oral health staff, dietitians Funding for the delivery of Bridges Out of Poverty inter-disciplinary training over 2 days in Hamilton and Portland areas for nurses, dental, health promotion and allied health professionals. The aim of this project: Is to fund the delivery training by Marie McLeod (Bridges Out Of Poverty accredited trainer) in February to April 2013 which will enable the integration of training outcomes across local health and community agencies within the Southern Grampians Shire and Glenelg Shire ensuring and a collaborative approach to engaging and working with disadvantaged groups. Participants will learn: - why clients and agencies often misunderstand each other; - how economic diversity affects behaviours and mindsets; - how to assess a person's resources (financial, emotional, mental, physical, support systems, literacy, knowledge of 'hidden rules'); - the 'hidden rules' of economic class, language differences and behaviours; - the implications for providing responsive services; - how to build and sustain relationships with those from situational and generational poverty; - skills in mediation, relationship building and mentoring; and - how to make practice changes in individual client work and at an agency level. small group discussions, coaching by the facilitator, analysing case studies, an examination of the client's life cycle to identify principles of change and the opportunity to plan and practise what is being taught with a view to reorienting service and program design, and re-development of policies and procedures and evaluation measures. PYSCHOLOGISTS ACCREDITATION TRAINING ON AUTISM DIAGNOSTIC OBSERVATION SCHEDULE (ADOS2) ID Round 4 33 ORGANISATION Hunter New England Health continuing professional development PROJECT DURATION September 2012 TARGET AUDIENCE psychologist Funding to assist attendance of a Psychologist at Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS2) Training September 2012 at Randwick, Sydney. The Training Provider is Dr Anne Chalfant - see Upskill Psychologists to provide Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) assessment. The Tamworth Child & Family Psychology service is currently the only Paediatric Allied Health service that provides this assessment to rural families in Tamworth (RA2), Manilla (RA3) and Barraba (RA3). The applicant will also provide supervision and support for other Psychologists in Gunnedah (RA3) and Quirindi (RA3) regarding appropriate assessment and intervention for rural families seeking assistance with diagnosis. This means families can remain locally for services and do not need to travel huge distances (to Newcastle or Brisbane). a workshop that offers those who have already completed ADOS training an opportunity to both learn about the new additions in the ADOS 2 and to revise and top up their administration and coding skills. The workshop will cover the administration and coding for the new Toddler Module, the revised algorithms, the new comparison scores and the use of the ADOS 2 in light of the proposed DSM V criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). networking and ongoing support following achievement of the ADOS administration competencies. E-MODULES ON TRANSITION TO RURAL AND REMOTE PRACTICE ID Round 4 36 ORGANISATION Services for Australian Rural & Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) web based resources flexible delivery & assessment PROJECT DURATION September September 2013 TARGET AUDIENCE all allied health professionals working in R&R context Funding for the development, launch and evaluation of additional 4 new online learning modules (20-30 mins each) within the SARRAH online resource "Supporting the Transition to Remote and Rural Practice" toolkit, see develop 4 additional online learning modules and update the current learning modules within the SARRAH online resource "Supporting the Transition to Remote and Rural Practice" toolkit. This project represents a collaboration between SARRAH and Centre for Remote Health (CRH). CRH will be contracted by SARRAH to develop and write the on-line materials. SARRAH will provide web development, launch the materials on an on-line site and administer this online platform. The project activities: The SARRAH Transition Toolkit provides a vehicle for sustainable joint continuing education across multi-disciplinary teams and networks. The modules will be freely accessible to all health professionals via the world wide web, and can be used as 'standalone' learning opportunities, or embedded into a local training initiative. Consultation with key stakeholders (rural and remote allied health professionals, the jurisdictions, UDRH, Medicare Locals, etc.) will identify the 4 priority modules for development. Whilst specific module learning outcomes will not be able to be determined until priority modules for development are identified, each module will have the following core learning outcomes: (1) Identify the unique features of rural and remote practice and reflect on the impact this has upon transition to this environment; (2) Apply existing knowledge and skills to specific practice situations that are unique to rural and remote allied health practice; and (3) Compare and contrast the role of the allied health practitioner as a sole practitioner and member of an inter-professional team in the unique environment of rural and remote practice. WORKSHOPS IN "MOTIVATIONAL ENHANCEMENT" (MOTENHANCE) AND "COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR" (COGBEHAV) THERAPY FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND OTHER DRUGS (ATODS) PRACTITIONERS ID ROUND 4 43 ORGANISATION James Cook University Continuing professional development, inter-professional learning, multidisciplinary team PROJECT DURATION 1 February to 31 July 2013 TARGET AUDIENCE social workers, psychologists, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs workers, counsellors Funding for the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC) to deliver train the trainer training (to Susan Jacups (SJ), JCU) and run 3 workshops in "motivational enhancement" (MotEnhance) and "cognitive behaviour" (CogBehav) therapy for Mental Health and Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATODS) practitioners and community members in remote Cape York communities and Weipa Hospital who provide counselling to Indigenous cannabis and other drug users. upskill local practitioners and build local capacity. Training will include Quitting Cannabis 1 6 sessions and Adolescent Cannabis Check-up. NCPIC trainer will travel to selected communities/townships in Cape York, and deliver training sessions. SJ would additionally undertake 'train the trainer' training at NCPIC to equip her to assist the NCPIC trainer. The project activities: all teaching materials that are provided as modules of training by NCPIC have been nationally accredited. SJ will assist in logistical coordination, and will run 'train-the-trainer' workshops for local staff. the NCPIC trainer may assist in the early sessions, afterwhich SJ will remain in the community continuing holding workshops until completion of the course. SJ will then extend the offer of workshops to elders and community members in learning MotEnhance and CogBehav techniques for them to use with their family, and other community members. LOCALLY CUSTOMIZE PARTICIPATIVE CULTURAL AWARENESS EDUCATION FOR PRIMARY HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS IN PORT PIRIE, KADINA AND CLARE ID Round 4 48 ORGANISATION Country North SA Medicare Local continuing professional education, inter-professional learning PROJECT DURATION 1 September 2012 to 30 June 2013 TARGET AUDIENCE pharmacists, community health teams, podiatrists, diabetes educators, dieticians, occupational therapists, optometrists, social workers, psychologists, Aboriginal Health Workers, GPs, overseas trained doctors, nurses, midwives Funds to locally customize participative cultural awareness education and deliver to primary health care professionals in Port Pirie, Kadina and Clare. General practices that participate in Commonwealth Government Closing the Gap (CTG) initiatives can register for the Practice Incentive Program Indigenous Health Incentive (PIP IHI). To participate in this incentive, at least two staff members from the registered practice must complete an endorsed cultural awareness education program. Further, under Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) guidelines, it is compulsory for all GP trainees in the RACGP specialist pathway and for International Medical Graduates (IMGs). deliver locally customised, participative cultural awareness education to primary health care professionals in three CNSAML locations eg Port Pirie, Kadina and Clare. The education will be tailored to each community and provide a unique opportunity to participate in a "walking in my shoes" cultural experience. Delivery of this education to the rural health workforce will improve the health of Indigenous people by positively influencing perceptions, assumptions and behaviours in clinical settings and increasing understanding of Indigenous culture and history. presentations and handouts, question and answer sessions, group activities, small group learning and case studies plus role play to explore Aboriginal culture, community and health. The full day activity is broken into seven parts which involve cultural history and education, diversity within Aboriginal culture, government policies, an interactive "walking in my shoes" drama workshop, and reflection on each participants own practice. HOSPITAL PHARMACISTS TO ATTEND INTERACTIVE SEMINARS ON CARDIOLOGY AND LABORATORY TESTS ANALYSIS ID ROUND 4 50 ORGANISATION Albury Base Hospital, Albury Wodonga Health Continuing Professional Education PROJECT DURATION 6 th to 21st October 2012 TARGET AUDIENCE pharmacists, nurses, doctors To fund registration fees for 3 hospital pharmacists to attend interactive seminars to be better equipped to practise clinical pharmacy activities in a hospital setting. To be better equip rural hospital pharmacists to practise clinical pharmacy activities in a hospital setting as part of a multidisciplinary team. The Society of Hospital Pharmacists seminars (6 training days) will include: 1. Seminar in Cardiology 2. Seminar in Laboratory Tests In-services by the pharmacist attending each seminar will be provided to other clinical pharmacists, nursing and medical staff within hospital. All Society of Hospital Pharmacists seminars are designed for pharmacists seeking to improve or update their knowledge of current clinical practice and focuses on general tasks undertaken by pharmacists in the workplace as well as key therapeutic areas. LIMITED LICENCE REMOTE X-RAY OPERATORS IN ASGC-RA 3 TO 5 REGIONS OF NSW ID ROUND 4 52 ORGANISATION University of Newcastle, University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) Continuing Professional Education PROJECT DURATION 1 May to 30 September 2013 TARGET AUDIENCE general practitioners, nurses, radiographers Funding to support the development, delivery and evaluation of two-day pilot refresher courses in Tamworth, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Lismore for limited licence remote x-ray operators to improve the quality of their radiography and reduce unnecessary radiation exposure of patients. Remote x-ray operators are mostly nurses (74%) and GPs (24%) who perform radiographic examinations in rural and remote locations where no radiographer is available. provide continuing education for limited licence remote x-ray operators in rural & remote areas of NSW to improve the quality of their radiography. two-day workshops at four different regional centres in NSW, with remote x-ray operators invited from RA 3-5 centres in each local region; develop and deliver refresher course material that targets the learning needs of remote x-ray operators, as indicated in previous studies; Engage local radiographers to participate in the workshops as tutors (at least two per workshop) in order that the participants will have ongoing local radiographic support; Provide feedback to participants about their radiographic performance by reviewing radiographic images, as well as case studies and interactive quizzes. It is expected that each workshop will cater for up to 25 remote operator participants, two tutor radiographers and up to two academic radiographers. IDENTIFY, TREAT AND MANAGE DEMENTIA, DELIRIUM AND DEPRESSION (3D'S) IN THE ELDERLY ID Round 4 54 ORGANISATION Bendigo Health continuing professional development, inter-professional learning, multidisciplinary team PROJECT DURATION September 2012 to October 2013 TARGET AUDIENCE aboriginal health workers, allied health professionals, nurses Funding to develop an on-line education resource that will assist health professionals working in rural and regional health services to identify, treat and manage dementia, delirium and depression (3D's) in the elderly. provide health professionals working in rural and regional health services with online education resources based on best practice standards that will assist them to identify, treat and manage dementia, delirium and depression in the elderly. The project activities. The online package will comprise a series of short (approximately 20 minutes) interactive e- learning modules and will include built-in hyperlinks to state and national resources in regard to cognitive assessment and management of impairments. Resource Kits will be developed for managers and coordinators at the individual health services to enable access to the online modules and assist where needed. Participants will undertake an online quiz to demonstrate their current understanding of management of cognitive impairment, and repeat this at the end of each module. Facilities can request face-to-face education sessions, if online opportunities cannot be taken or if a need is identified. The program will include links to generic information from Alzheimers Australia, Beyond Blue and Clinical Practice Guidelines, where available. A key difference in what is being proposed is that there are no on-line resources currently available that include all three areas. TRAINING COURSE ON HOW TO IDENTIFY, SCREEN AND MANAGE PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD) FOR PHARMACISTS AND OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN RURAL & REMOTE AREAS ID Round 4 58 ORGANISATION Australian Lung Foundation Continuing Professional Education PROJECT DURATION 1 March 2013 to October 2013 TARGET AUDIENCE pharmacists, doctors, nurses Funding requested for the development of an online training and assessment program (4-5 hours online, flexible, self-paced, interactive). The purpose of the project is to increase the knowledge, confidence and skills of pharmacists in rural and remote Australia to identify, screen and assist in the management of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and engaging them in a multi-disciplinary team approach to care. develop and pilot a training course on the identification, screening and management of patients with COPD by the Australian Lung Foundation in conjunction with rural pharmacists and other health professionals working in rural/remote locations, and develop networks with the wider primary care teams. case studies and videos to reinforce clinical learning; online interaction where participants are asked to drop and drag content, click content to reveal information, and respond to questions; practice quizzes at the end of each module to test knowledge; an overall assessment at the end of the training which requires participants to achieve an 80% pass mark to receive a Certificate of Completion and claim continuing professional development credits. ENROLLED NURSE BRIDGING COURSE TO THE DIPLOMA OF NURSING ID Round 4 78 ORGANISATION Sunitafe Institute of TAFE Continuing Professional Education PROJECT DURATION 12 November 2012 to 7 October 2013 TARGET AUDIENCE Enrolled Nurses Funding to develop and pilot an Enrolled Nurse Bridging Course to the Diploma of Nursing - to be delivered in 27 workshops 20 units. 10 students will attend the workshops relevant to them which will be determined by the skills analysis and gap training for each individual to upgrade to the HLT51607 Diploma of Nursing. Develop and pilot a new Diploma of Nursing course which will reflect the changing role of the Enrolled Nurse within the health environment. The learning outcomes will include the provision of patient-centred nursing care, the recognition of normal and abnormal in assessment, intervention and evaluation of individual health and functional status. The program will adhere to the philosophy statement of Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). The bridging course students will be rotated through the clinical areas of Swan Hill District Health and the group will be supported by Sunraysia Institute of TAFE. The project activities: The curriculum aims to develop student s reflective practice, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. Case studies and scenarios in the classroom and nursing laboratory will provide challenges for the students and enable them to develop and display the following skills: underpinning knowledge; environmental skills; problem solving skills; reflective and critical thinking; transfer skills; identify knowledge and skills. These skills are further developed with professional practice where students are required to maintain a journal in which they reflect and apply these critical thinking skills to the workplace, under the direct supervision of their preceptor and clinical teachers. The project activities: a half day training program, "Work effectively with Therapy Assistants" provided by the Royal Rehabilitation College, includes the following topics: o training and qualifications; o competence and experience; o task delegation; o assistant roles; o creating a position description; o communication; o supervision; o accountability; o legal responsibility; o creating a model; and, o creating a new assistant position.
