1 General Information The Australian Dental Association (Queensland Branch) Union of Employers RTO, ADAQ Certificate III in Dental Assisting (HLT35015) is run as a service to the members of ADA. It offers training for dental assistants employed by ADA members, in the public health sector and by the University of Queensland Dental School. Dental assistants employed with non-member dentists may seek special permission to enrol via written application to ADAQ. Entry Recommendations School Leavers - Year 10 with a Sound achievement in English (or equivalent) and Science is recommended OR Mature Age Entry/Non School Leavers - upon application. Consideration is given to experience in the field, previous study and eligibility. Current employment in a dental practice as a dental assistant is required. Persons seeking employment as a dental assistant may also apply, however they may only commence a limited number of non-clinical units while unemployed. Completion Requirement HLTAID003 Provide First Aid is a core unit. ADAQ requires that Senior First Aid or equivalent (including CPR) must be current prior to course completion. No award will be issued without the completion of HLTAID003 Provide First Aid. This is to be undertaken at the student s own expense and in the student s own time. Recognition Recognition is available, when applicable, for course units. Information regarding Recognition for prior life experience or comparable qualification or subjects/modules/units from other courses is available on request. Course Duration The course will run for one full year. Units will be completed in course order. ADAQ currently runs 2 courses per year. The first course commencing in January/February offers both Metropolitan and Distance modes of study. The second course (mid-year, commencing in July) offers Distance mode only. Modes of Learning Metropolitan mode will require attendance of one evening a week at evening lectures and assessments, along with tasks and assessments to be completed in class at work, on-line and in own time. Brisbane metropolitan and near metropolitan students are expected to enrol in this mode of study. Classes are held from pm Monday at the ADAQ CPD & Training Centre, Hamilton Place, Bowen Hills. Limited parking is available. Distance mode will require completion of readings, exercises and assessment tasks to be completed at work, on-line and in own time. Distance mode will also require the student to access practice and local support and a regional ADAQ group if available. (These may be developed in response to student enrolments.) Compulsory Workplace Assessment is included in the course and visits to practice will be arranged. Workplace Assessments may be conducted by ADAQ staff or a regional ADAQ assessor if available and agreed. This will comprise one or two visits to the student in their workplace for the purpose of assessment and discussion ADAQ Benefits Students enrolled with ADAQ will additionally obtain: The ADAQ Badge, Certificate & Graduation gift on completion of the course. Complimentary entry to the Graduation Dinner and ceremony held annually in February following the completion of studies. Discounts available for CPD events. You will also gain the skills to assist with practice administration. Completion of some Units of Competency and not the entire course will result with a Statement of Attainment for the units successfully completed. This unit applies to a range of health and community service contexts where workers may communicate face to face, in writing, or using digital media and work with limited responsibility under direct or indirect supervision. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

This unit applies to individuals working in health and direct client care contexts. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. Follow standard and additional precautions for infection prevention and control Identify infection hazards and assess risks Follow procedures for managing risks associated with specific hazards HLTINF002 Process reusable medical devices and equipment This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to clean, sterilise and package reusable medical devices and equipment. This unit applies to workers in office based health practice settings such as general practitioner (GP) surgeries, dental practices and other environments where a limited range of sterilisation equipment may be available. They follow established procedures and work under general supervision. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. The unit applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, either under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. Follow safe work practices Implement safe work practices Contribute to safe work practices in the workplace Reflect on own safe work practices HLTDEN001 Prepare for and assist with oral health care procedures This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for a dental assistant to assist the operator by preparing the dental surgery including preparing necessary equipment, instruments and materials for oral health care procedures, and to assist the operator during the delivery of these procedures. This unit applies to dental assisting work. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

4 Prepare the dental surgery for oral health care procedures Use dental terminology in communication within the health care setting Record personal, medical and dental details Select and prepare syringe safely for local anaesthesia Assist the operator during oral health care procedures Maintain and store instruments, equipment, material and medicaments HLTDEN002 Assist with Dental Radiography This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for a dental assistant to prepare patients for dental radiography. It also describes the skills and knowledge to process and mount conventional dental radiographs. This unit applies to dental assisting work. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. Prepare for dental radiography Prepare equipment and materials for dental radiography Process and mount dental radiographs Maintain stock of unexposed radiographic film and chemicals Ensure the quality of dental radiographic processing HLTDEN003 Assist with administration in dental practice This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for a dental assistant to assist the operator by managing appointments to suit the patient and the organisation, recording and reconciling payments, and maintaining patient records. This unit applies to dental assistants who assist with administration in dental practice. Communicate effectively with patients and other persons Respond appropriately to enquiries from patients and visitors Allocate appointments appropriate to patient and organisation requirements Calculate and record basic financial transactions Handle cash and record financial transactions Maintain patient records Assist with patient recalls (HLTAID003 Provide First Aid is not conducted by ADAQ, it is the students responsibility to organise attendance at a first aid course in their area) HLTAID003 Provide First Aid This Unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. NOTE: - Demonstration of all performance criteria is to be under the direction of the dentist or dental specialist. All procedures are carried out in accordance with infection control guidelines, occupational health and safety policies, Australian and New Zealand Standards and legislative requirements as they relate to the dental assistant s specific job role.

5 Elective Unit Descriptions HLTDEN004 Implement an individualised oral hygiene program This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to implement an individualised oral hygiene program and promote oral health. This unit applies to dental assistants and to other health care workers who are actively involved in promoting the general well-being of patients through promotion of healthy eating habits and good oral health. Implement a prescribed oral health education program Demonstrate oral hygiene techniques to patient or carer Provide appropriate advice on cariogenic food and drinks Perform a saliva diagnostic test and record the results Implement a prescribed prevention program to suit an individual patient HLTDEN011 Implement an oral health promotion program This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide an oral health promotion program. This unit applies to dental assistants and to other health care workers who are actively involved in promoting general well-being through the promotion of healthy eating habits and good oral health. Deliver an oral health promotion program Develop oral health promotion strategies for a target group Integrate oral health promotion with targeted National Health Priorities FEE AND REFUND POLICY Next Review Date: July 2017 POLICY STATEMENT The Australian Dental Association (Queensland Branch) will ensure fees which are charged for training, are fair and equitable to all participants. Refunds are available to students in accordance with Government guidelines and fair and proper standards. Should any course be cancelled by ADAQ, any monies paid by participants will be fully refunded or transferred to a future course. See refund policy for course cancellation information. All monies received by the Australian Dental Association (Queensland Branch) for course fees are maintained in a separate account and are not accessed until the course commences. A relevant proportion of fees paid will remain in that account until the course is completed, to ensure pro-rata refunds for eligible students. FEES AND CHARGES HLT35015 Certificate III in Dental Assisting Fees include all learning resources/materials required. Replacement fees are applicable for lost materials. Payment of Course Fees Payments may be made by one of two options. Option 1: Full payment of course on enrolment $ OR Option 2: Initial Payment (due on enrolment) $ Plus 8 monthly payments of $ (due by 1 st of each month after enrolment) Non-payment of agreed initial fee payments by the start of the course will result in cancellation of enrolment. No responsibility will be accepted for students who are refused access to their nominated course due to non-payment of fees.

6 Due dates: Agreed Fee payments are to be made by the due date as per the current fee schedule or a $50 Late Fee may be imposed. istration Fees A non-refundable istration Fee of $ is payable by all students to cover the administrative cost of the course and provision of course materials. Recognition If a student gains (or wishes to gain) Recognition, then a percentage of the total fee is payable. This will be determined in conjunction with the claim for Recognition and the student informed in writing. Fee Schedule A complete fee schedule is issued each time the course is offered. The fee schedule is subject to review prior to each issue. Students will receive the current fee schedule on initial enrolment enquiries in addition to with each full enrolment package. The fee schedule will also include due dates for fees payable. Financial Advice Financial advice relating to the payment of course fees is available from ADAQ. Students experiencing financial difficulties in the payment of fees are encouraged to seek a private consultation with the Deputy CEO who will refer the student on if necessary. The services of ADAQ CEO will be utilised and referral to outside agencies will be made if the support needed is beyond the scope of ADAQ. Payment Methods Payments may be made by cheque, credit card, money order or by direct deposit to ADAQ bank account. Receipts will be mailed. Monthly statements will be issued. Payments must be made to ADAQ by post, fax or direct deposit. Cash payments will not be accepted by lecturers or tutors at training sessions outside of ADAQ office hours. Refunds A full refund (less istration Fee) will only be given if ADAQ receives written notification of cancellation by the student at least 5 working days before the commencement of the course. A $ istrative Fee will be retained to cover costs. Therefore any fee refund will consist of the total fee paid less $ A 50% cancellation fee may apply if written notification is received less than two (2) working days before the commencement of the course. This will be at the discretion of the Deputy CEO and based on written information supplied by student with cancellation notification. No refund will be given for cancellations or a student s failure to attend after the commencement of the course; No refund will be given once students have received course material. A refund of fees on a pro-rata basis may be granted if the student gains Recognition through part of the Unit of Study or suffers an illness, injury or other exceptional circumstances preventing completion of the Unit. This will be subject to approval by the Deputy CEO and based on written information supplied by the student. All monies received by the Australian Dental Association (Queensland Branch) for Dental Assistant course fees are maintained in a separate account. Termination of enrolment must be given in writing. Enrolled students who seek to terminate their enrolment will be liable for all course fees accrued until written notification is received.
