Guelph Site
Site Information Guelph is a city of approximately 120,000 people, located 20 minutes east of Kitchener, and an hour west of Toronto. It is home to the world-renowned Hillside Festival, the University of Guelph, as well as numerous parks and art centres. 10 Resident Perspective My favorite thing about being based in Guelph has been doing rotations at Guelph General Hospital. I have had the unique opportunity of being one of the only residents to do multiple rotations there and get to know staff physicians (hospitalists, ER docs, internists, radiologists, and surgeons), nurses, pharmacists, PT/OTs, dietitians, SLPs, security staff, cafeteria staff, etc. longitudinally while on different services. I found everyone treated me like I was "their learner" - not to provide service if I wasn't on their service, but just for the pleasure of teaching me things. It is not a teaching hospital where learners are depended upon to keep it running, but rather a learning hospital where everyone (almost invariably) takes the initiative to share their wisdom and experience with the few residents who have the incredible privilege of training there. Sarah Leonard, PGY2
Resident Perspective Advantages A pleasant community to live and work in Being one of the only learners at the site, which means less learner-fatigue and the ability to be actively involved in the management of the FHO Disadvantages Being away from the main teaching site, which means missing out on some evening teaching sessions and lunch & learn sessions and some socializing opportunities
Resident Perspective Matching to Guelph has been an excellent opportunity. Guelph is a vibrant community with a growing arts scene, and a strong sense of environmentalism. The Guelph General Hospital is an excellent place to work, and the rotations available there are always highly rated by the residents. Also, Guelph is well-known for its collegial atmosphere within the medical community, and residents are treated as respected members of the team from day one. -- Lisa Friars, PGY1
Living in Guelph By far the best place to live in the general region. There is a different feel in the air in Guelph. There are way more independently owned and delicious restaurants per capita. The downtown is lovely. There is a culture of supporting independent business, local products, microbrews etc that is very strong. There is also a decent music scene with "The best jazz festival in Canada" according to a former Globe and Mail Jazz columnist, as well as Hillside Music Festival, and smaller shows throughout the year. There are plenty of sports leagues and an air of collective community I just don't sense in any other place. It is hard to put a finger on what makes Guelph so special, but it really is. The university is also a great place to spend some time as there are lots of interesting free talks, cheap use of athletics area ($4 for day pass to the gym). -- PGY2 resident
