2 2 NURSING FUNDAMENTALS A. Nursing Fundamentals a. Understand the role, function, legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse aide within the healthcare system b. Understand communication skills, interpersonal skills and physical care skills that promote mental health and meet social and special needs of patients in the hospital setting. c. Understand infection control, safety and emergency skills within the nurse aide range of function B. Nurse Aide Patient Care Skills a. Understand nurse aide skills related to patients vital functions and movement b. Understand nurse aide skills related to patients hygiene, grooming, skin integrity and living environment needs c. Understand nurse aide skills needed to provide for patients nutrition, hydration and elimination needs. d. Apply nurse aide skills by providing hands on patient care during a 40 hour (minimum) clinical experience in and approved hospital facility. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: TURN OFF CELL PHONES and place in compartments on the wall unless using for classwork when designated by teacher. No cell phones during lab skills time Show respect for yourself, your teachers and your fellow students!!! Be ready to work when entering the classroom. Do NOT disrupt or talk while the teacher, guest speakers, or other students are talking or presenting VIOLATIONS: Violations, depending on severity, will be met with: 1 st a warning (verbal or written) 2 nd parental contact 3 rd referral to an administrator COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for students interested in medical careers where personal care and basic nursing skills are used. This course is an enhanced adaptation of the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR) Nurse Aide 1 (NA1) curriculum and helps prepare students for the National Nurse Aide Assessment (NNAAP). Students who pass the NNAAP become listed on the NC NA1 Registry. English, language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include a required clinical internship in a long-term care agency. Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. *Enrollment is limited per North Carolina Board of Nursing (BON) Administrative

3 3 Rule 21 NCAC (i), which requires the ratio of teacher to nurse aide students be 1:10 or less while in the clinical area. DHSR applies BON Rule to the classroom training area. COURSE OUTLINE: There are skills that must be learned, practiced, and demonstrated in the classroom before transition to the clinical setting can take effect. While learning these skills, the course also requires 14 topics of instruction to further advance the students knowledge of health care science. You will be tested on your knowledge and understanding at the end of each unit. A NURSE AIDE WORKPLACE FUNDAMENTALS 1 Understand the role, function, legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse aide within the healthcare system Understand healthcare facilities and organizational structure Understand nurse aide range of function as a member of the healthcare team Understand residents rights, advocacy and grievance procedures. 2 Understand communication skills, interpersonal skills, and physical care skills that promote mental health and meet social and special needs of residents in long term care Understand communication and interpersonal skills needed to provide resident care and relate to team members Understand nurse aide observations, recording and reporting Understand basic human needs and nurse aide guidelines in meeting those needs Understand the dying process and needs of the resident nearing the end of life. 3 Understand infection control, safety and emergency skills within the nurse aide range of function Understand infection control within nurse aide range of function Understand safety and emergency care skills within nurse aide range of function. B NURSE AIDE RESIDENT CARE SKILLS 4 Understand nurse aide skills related to residents vital functions and movement Understand vital signs, height and weight measurement skills Understand the nurse aide s range of function in rehabilitative/restorative and maintenance care. 5 Understand nurse aide skills related to residents hygiene, grooming, skin integrity, and living environment needs Understand nurse aide skills needed for residents hygiene and grooming Understand nurse aide skills needed to promote skin integrity Understand the nurse aide s role in creating a safe and clean environment that fosters resident independence, contentment and self-esteem. 6 Understand nurse aide skills needed to provide for residents nutrition, hydration, and elimination needs Understand nurse aide skills needed to care for residents elimination and urination needs. 7 APPLY nurse aide skills by providing hands on resident care during a 40 hour (minimum) clinical experience in an approved long term care facility. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES: I will be using several different types of teaching methods in this class. I will use power point presentations for lecture and notes will be taken from the presentations. I will also be using models to explain and show the techniques used in the skills they will be performing. We will review skills as a class and I will demonstrate the skill. Finally, the student will practice the skill in the lab with direction from the instructor. To master a skill, the student must perform the skill with 100% mastery, with NO help from the instructor or other students.

4 4 CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS/MATERIALS: All students are required to bring their textbook and notebook with notes and check-off sheets to class daily ring binders Sheet protectors if desire 1-compostion book for classroom daily bell ringer (to stay in classroom at all times) 1-compostion book Clinical journal Pencils, pens and highlighters (any color) CLASSROOM ATTENDANCE POLICY: The School Attendance Policy is enforced in this course. Essential information and materials on learning to care for others will be given during classroom instruction. The instructor will NOT allow advancement into the clinical portion of this course if the student has not been present in the classroom to receive instruction or practice skills. Therefore, not completing the clinical portion of the class will result in the student NOT being able to take the State test. They will however, still have to take the Vocats test. HOMEWORK POLICES/PROCEDURES: Homework should be limited in this class, however at times there will be work that needs to be completed at home by the student. The work is expected to be turned in AND completed on time. EVIDENCE BASED RESEARCH PROJECT: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a problem-solving approach to the delivery of health care that integrates the best evidence from studies and patient care data with clinician expertise and patient preferences and values. (Fineout-Overholt E, 2010). Health care that is evidence based and performed in a caring context leads to better clinical decisions and patient outcomes. Students will be required to work individually on this project. A three to four-page research paper will be required for the EBP. Students will need to present a topic to the teacher for approval within the first two weeks of school. There will be some time in class to work on these projects. This project will be discussed in detail in class. This project will count as 25% of the student s grade. Major Projects/Assignments: The first grading period project will be The American Red Cross Blood Drive. The Nursing Fundamentals students will have an active role in marketing the blood drive, recruiting for the blood drive and lastly, having a huge part of working at the blood drive. The annual spring American Red Cross Drive is tentatively set for February 16 th The second grading period will be the student s active participation in the clinical component of this course. The students will participate in a minimal of 40-hour clinical experience at Skyland Care Center. Each student MUST complete All skills before advancing to the clinical experience. Dress Code: All students are required to maintain standards of dress and grooming that are consistent with good hygiene and professional appearance. Hair is to be put up so that is does not interfere with the safe performance of your job; it must be neat and clean. Hair color must reflect a traditional color (as opposed to green, blue, purple, etc.); sideburns, mustaches and beards must be kept neat and trimmed. Artificial nails are not to be worn. Natural nails should not extend any longer than ¼ beyond the fingertips, and nail polish should be clean and not chipped. Clothing shall be appropriate for the job performed and the area where the work is performed, clothing should be kept clean, pressed, mended, and neat.

5 Grading Policy: Grading percentages: 5 A *Academics: B Classwork/Homework 5% C Clinical Performance 5% D Clinical Journals 5% F 59 and below Lab skills 10% Quizzes 5% Unit Test 30% Mid-Term 15% Final Exam 25 % REMIND 101: Remind 101 will be used to keep students informed of due dates and upcoming assignments and reminders for tests. Parents are encouraged to sign up for this as well. It is free to use. Students will receive reminders about tests, assignments, etc. Students and parents can join by sending a text to and in the message box. I can send text messages but students and parents will not be able to respond to the text messages.
