1 Mercy Living Plus 201 8th Avenue, S.E., Oelwein, Iowa June 2014 What fun we had during our Hawaii week! Spam is very popular in Hawaii. It is a portable, durable meat that does not require any type of refrigeration. It was first introduced during World War II by American soldiers to Hawaiian natives, who quickly adopted it as an important part of their diet. Staff, residents and families had fun as we enjoyed the Top Chef Competition. Four competitors each created an entreé using spam as the main ingredient. The secret ingredient was lime. Chaplain Denise Lindemann cooked up a Mountain Man s Breakfast. A comment from one of the judges was, I would get up early any day for this delicious breakfast! Jon and Grant Turner cooked up some Hickory, Spam Pineapple Sliders. A comment from one of the judges was, Bold outside the box flavor, love the kick! Alli Ingels cooked up some Hawaiian Spam Spheres. A comment from one of the judges was, Delicious warm flavor blend! Paula Bush and Maureen Nolan presented creamed spam on toast points with a candied spam on the side. A comment from the judges was, Loved the hint of horseradish and elegant serving style on toast points! JUDGES: Deb Kunkle, Dixie Duffy and Mike Newsom Contestants were judged on taste, creativity and presentation. Judges, residents and staff were able to taste the creations. reminisced about cooking spam for their family. There are a few residents that enjoy a good bargain. We will continue our Crop Checks each week, as the crops grow, and visits to the Amish community. A men s BBQ is planned for 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10th at Mercy Park. Jim Kinney will entertain the men. Barb Roberson will play her harp on Thursday, June 12th at 1:30 p.m. The men will enjoy the Amish auction on the 17th. A trip to the Isle, Casino is planned for Thursday, June 19th. We plan to leave the parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and return right after lunch around 1:30 p.m. A fishing we will go! As always, I am very blessed to have a co-worker in our Activity Department that goes above and beyond in the job she does as Activity Coordinator. We congratulate her for everything she does for Mercy Living Plus. A reminder to Spring into action and change out those winter clothes that are in your loved one s dresser or closet. Mercy Park Spiffy Award Promoting beautifying your landscape or cleaning up areas to make it look nice, Positively Oelwein presents a Spiffy Award monthly for the city of Oelwein in the various sections of town. Mercy Park received the first one of the year for the beautiful pink tulips that the X ray department planted for breast cancer. The tulips are not in bloom anymore but please take the time to sit and enjoy the park. We invite family and friends to walk through Mercy Park with your loved one on these beautiful days! It is a beautiful place to relax and visit. The residents love it out there. We all enjoy some sunshine and fresh air.

He planted half an acre to an acre and a half. As we visited one day he suggested planting a garden. With the help of our wonderful maintenance men, they created a raised garden bed for the residents to plant a garden, located out at Mercy Park. We are starting small but enjoyed planting some grape tomatoes, green peppers, orange peppers, onions, carrots, radishes and lettuce. We also planted some marigolds and zinnias that the Junior Kindergartners brought up to us. After showing me how deep to plant everything and how far apart they should be planted, how the Miracle Grow should be mixed with the water we have a great little garden planted. Watering every morning has been going good with many stories of gardening being shared. We are encouraging many walks or wheelchair rides in the park to pull any weeds they might see. Caregram The Resident Council chose housekeeper Eleanor Ritter, for this month s Caregram. Eleanor has made a positive difference with the residents of Mercy Living Plus. say that Eleanor does a good job of cleaning. They enjoy her visits and smile. Thank you Eleanor for making a difference! Men s Day BBQ We will be having a BBQ for the men and their guests on Tuesday, June 10th at 5:00 p.m. in Mercy Park. In case of rain, we will hold the BBQ in the first floor cafeteria. RSVP by June 6th, two guests per resident. Music provided by Jim Kinney. Special thanks go out to Sue Schneider and Yvette Shinn for making this month s celebrations extra special. With all the activity we have also had some change along the way.

I talked with all the residents that could give feedback, and the resident council about this prior to making this decision.

Friendships were made and visits for the summer were planned between friends. will be looking forward to making some new friends this fall. I noticed that not only the residents enjoyed this but also the families and staff. Seems everyone was pretty tired by the end of the week which tells me that fun was had by all. MLP made a decision to tear down the Restorative Therapy Room and open this up to a couple more residents that needed and wanting to come live here. I talked with all the residents that could give feedback, and the resident council about this prior to making this decision. It was unanimous that all the current residents thought it was a positive thing to open our doors to more of those within our community that needed this service. We are able to accommodate two more residents comfortably. This does not mean that we do not do our restorative therapy. We have just taken that service room to room now to the resident and moved the Nustep bike to the commons area in front of the television. Thank you too all of you that embraced this change. If you get a chance ask a current resident or employee about the Golden Sneaker Award. This is something that was created by our therapy department. A goal for the week is created and then documented on and prizes along with the trophy. Golden Sneakers are awarded to the resident and employee that achieved the goal the highest. During our first week we focused on feet ambulated by resident and staff. We had only 369 documented feet ambulated. By the 2nd week we had documented 3, 948 feet by both. This is a huge improvement and the numbers keep getting higher. This program is a fun incentive, posing great quality to our residents and staff. Each week we try to change the goal so all the residents and staff have a chance to win and participate. It looks like their getting the corn planted. Some are working on their beans.
