St. Charles Receives Women s Choice Award for Orthopedics, Obstetrics, Bariatrics and Patient Safety St. Charles Hospital is pleased to announce that we ve earned the 2018 Women s Choice Award, America s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics, Obstetrics, Bariatrics and Patient Safety. The Women s Choice Award for America s Best Hospitals is a coveted credential that identifies the nation s best hospitals based on robust criteria that includes relevant clinical performance, patient satisfaction and appropriate accreditations. The top 10% of hospitals in the U.S. are recognized, supporting Women s Choice mission to connect women to the best healthcare. By carrying the Women s Choice Award St. Charles is part of an elite network of health care facilities and corporations across America whom are all committed to empowering women to make smart health care and consumer choices. In order to achieve this award, St. Charles needed to meet the strictest level of health care criteria, from our community. In fact, only the hospitals that achieve a high level of patient satisfaction criteria from their patients are eligible to earn the award including exceptional ratings, demonstrating the provision of the highest level of care and commitment to their patients health and well-being. This award is the only designation that takes into consideration the preferences of women when selecting a hospital. I m very proud of the staff at St. Charles, said Jim O Connor, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, St. Charles. The dedication they demonstrate to patient safety and providing the highest quality of care is recognized with the four Women s Choice Awards and a testament to the Hospital s ongoing commitment to the families within this community. 2 A Message From the Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer As a community hospital, we feel a deep sense of pride and commitment to all who place their trust in our care by choosing St. Charles. Our primary focus is to always deliver exceptional care that exceeds national standards in quality, safety and patient satisfaction. So, it is an honor to announce that St. Charles has earned the 2018 Women s Choice Award, America s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics, Orthopedics, Bariatrics and Patient Safety. This recognition is a testament to our ongoing commitment to the families within our community. St. Charles Hospital earned the award by meeting the strictest level of healthcare criteria; we had to earn it from our community. In fact, only hospitals that achieve a high level of patient satisfaction criteria from their patients are eligible to earn the award and we are so proud of that accomplishment. Our unwavering commitment to providing the best health care is our most important pledge to our community and the greatest compliment. By carrying the Women s Choice Award, St. Charles is part of an elite network of health care facilities and corporations across America whom are committed to empowering women to make smart health care and consumer choices. 3 Breakthrough Treatment for Patients with Barrett s Esophagus Now Available at St. Charles Radiofrequency ablation system reduces risk of Barrett s esophagus progressing to esophageal cancer. St. Charles Hospital now offers the Barrx radiofrequency ablation system, a treatment that removes esophageal tissues affected by Barrett s esophagus, a pre-cancerous disease (dysplastic Barrett s esophagus). If you suffer from heartburn or other acid reflux symptoms such as chronic heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), you may be at risk for Barrett s esophagus, a serious disease that can eventually lead to esophageal cancer. Barrett s esophagus occurs when cells in the lower esophagus are affected by chronic exposure to acid. Because of its strong association with esophageal cancer, it is considered a pre-cancerous disease. More than 12.5 million people in the U.S. have Barrett s esophagus, many of whom are not even diagnosed. Diagnosis of Barrett s esophagus requires patients to undergo an upper endoscopy, a non-surgical procedure. During endoscopy, the physician removes esophagus tissue for biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Patients diagnosed with Barrett s esophagus may be candidates for outpatient Barrx radiofrequency ablation. The Barrx radiofrequency ablation system is a very specific type of ablation, in which thermal (heat) energy is delivered in a precise and highly controlled manner. Barrett s esophagus tissue is very thin and, therefore, a good candidate for removal with ablative energy. Delivery of ablative energy with the Barrx radiofrequency ablation system can achieve complete removal of the diseased tissue without damage to the normal underlying structures. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Barrett s esophagus tissue can be completely eliminated with the Barrx radiofrequency ablation system in more than 90 percent of patients. For more information on Barrx radiofrequency ablation system, please call (631) New Outpatient Site in Commack...Continued from page 2 strategically located across Long Island. Always striving to provide superior rehabilitative care to those in need, St. Charles has achieved CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accreditation in Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation, Pediatric Specialty Programs, Stroke Specialty Programs, Brain Injury Specialty Programs, and Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation for both adults and children. This is the highest level of recognition that can be awarded for these services. The St. Catherine & St. Charles Center for Health & Wellness offers comprehensive services including primary care, women s health, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation and orthopedics. The Center offers one of only a handful of MRI Caring Suites on Long Island. The MRI Caring Suite is the optimum in personalized experience aimed at reducing anxiety with the patient s choice of ambient lighting, overhead scenery and music, while the wide tunnel allows for shorter scan times and reduced noise. 7 Coughing, Sneezing, Wheezing, Shortness of Breath? St. Charles Can Help! The statistics are startling. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 30 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with asthma during their lifetime and approximately 69-80% of asthmatics have an allergic component to their asthma. Of the 20 million U.S. residents who currently have asthma, 12 million have had an asthma episode or attack over the past year. Even more startling is that the number of reported cases of asthma has been on the rise since 1980 with four thousand people dying each year from asthma-related causes. Most of those deaths and poor quality of life can be avoided with proper treatment and care and that s where St. Charles Hospital comes in. The expert clinicians at St. Charles Hospital s Allergy and Asthma Center offer comprehensive diagnosis and management of allergic disorders of the nose, ears, sinuses, skin, and lungs. Conditions include sinus issues, breathing difficulty, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and bronchiolitis. Food and environmental allergies are also treated. Education and disease management are at the core of the program with each patient receiving an individualized treatment plan. Depending on a patient s specific symptoms, the treatment plan may include patient specific and individualized medications including immunotherapy (allergy injection therapy to rid the body of specific allergy triggers). The Asthma and Allergy Center at St. Charles is spearheaded by Louis Guida, Jr., MD. Dr. Guida is board certified in adult and pediatric allergy and immunology and has had numerous years of experience in treating infants, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly with specific allergy and asthma issues.
