Warm Up Question When you hear Health in All Policies what do you think? 3

Warm Up Question What is your experience with Health Impact Assessments in your community? 4

Our path toward Health in All Policies Health Equity & Social Justice Healthy Communities Access to healthcare, focus on minority health and alignment of human services providers toward common agenda. Nudging of leadership, with staff & community engagement. Policy, system & environmental change focused on built environment. Staff initiatives and community members winning changes. Policy, system & environmental change focused on the built environment and other social determinants of health? 5

Our path toward Health in All Policies : Staff and county commissioner and interest in King County Equity and Social Justice ordinance, interbranchteam, equity impact review and annual benchmarking and reporting. 2013: 2013: Opportunity to convene residents to explore Health in All Policies as part of grant awarded by Health Impact Project, a collaboration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts, to expand the use of Health Impact Assessments. 2013: Opportunity to host dialogue sessions throughout Michigan to explore how community organizing groups and health department staff could develop more intentional partnerships 6

Our path toward Health in All Policies A Health in All Policies approach engages organizational leadership to include health considerations in policy making across different sectors that influence health, such as transportation, agriculture, land use, housing, public safety, and education. 7

HiAPCommunity Workgroup TiyahIsom-Morris, Americorps Vista, Tri-County Office on Aging and Chairperson of Ingham County Equal Opportunity Commission Joy Gleason, Community Activist Gary Rowe, Ingham County Board of Health Denise Chrysler, Ingham County Board of Health Brett Dreyfus, Meridian Township Clerk Darlene Walker-Brewer, RICC & Action of Greater Lansing Shelli Smith, Barry Eaton District Health Department Jessica Yorko, Ingham County Health Department 8

HiAP Making the Connection How Employment, Education and Transportation affect Health Outcomes Tiyah Isom-Morris Health Administration BS 9

Stable Jobs = Healthier Lives tells a story on the role of employment in the health of our communities. Since 1977, the life expectancy of male workers retiring at age 65 has risen 6 years in the top half of the income distribution, but only 1.3 years in the bottom half. Laid-off workers are 54% more likely to have fair or poor health, and 83% more likely to develop a stress-related health condition. Unemployment may affect physical health via a "stress" pathway involving physiological changes such as a raised cholesterol concentration and lowered immunity Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, March 2013, Health Policy Snapshot Series Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health 1994;48:

Better Education = Healthier Lives tells a story on the role of education in the health of our communities. Education leads to better jobs and income, but also to longer, healthier lives. The link between more education and better health is stronger than you think College graduates can expect to live at least 5 years longer than individuals who have not finished high school The more years of education a mother received, the more likely her infant is to survive and thrive. The infant mortality rate (per 1,000 live births) for women who never graduated high school is nearly double that of women with college degrees. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, March 2013, Health Policy Snapshot Series Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health 1994;48:

Better Transportation Options = Healthier Lives tells a story on the role of transportation in the health of our communities. Public transit users walk an average of 19 minutes getting to and from public transportation. Countries with lower rates of obesity tend to have higher rates of commuters who walk or bike to work. The risk of obesity increases 6 percent with every additional mile spent in the car, and decreases 5 percent with every kilometer walked. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, March 2013, Health Policy Snapshot Series Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health 1994;48:

Engage department leadership Engage Board of Health Allow tension between an internal process and broad community process Find what fits in your community Have one-on-one discussions when necessary Have a variety of spokespersons 21

Our path toward Health in All Policies Nudging of leadership, with staff & community engagement. Staff initiatives and community members winning changes. 22

What does it mean to facilitate? To elicit, gather, and synthesize the collective wisdom of a group of people through the broadest possible participation, and achieving the broadest possible ownership of outcomes. 23

What does it mean to facilitate Connect with groups that want to build residents collective power to improve their lives Identify, seek to understand, and encourage potential community leaders Link people to each other, and sometimes link whole networks of people together Know when to step up and when to step back organizing?
