3 VISION STATEMENT It is the vision of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS)/Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) to be the premier provider of nursing education that prepares individuals for nursing practice and establishes a foundation for lifelong learning. This course prepares the learner to expand knowledge from previous courses in caring for clients across the life span with alterations in cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and hematologic systems as well as clients with fluid/ electrolyte and acid-base imbalance, and alterations in comfort. Learning/The Adult Learner: Self-directed, independent study requires that the student accepts responsibility for learning specific objectives within a defined period of time. The adult learner must assume an active role by setting priorities for all personal activities, thus allowing adequate time to prepare for discussions to meet course objectives. In general, one hour of class requires two hours of out-of-class reading / studying. Additional studying will likely be needed prior to an exam. Sessions will only be meaningful if the student has prepared themselves prior to attending discussions. Course Activities: Discussion (3 hours per week/semester): The student is responsible for preparation and participation in group discussions. It is expected that the learner has completed the learner activities prior to attending class. Class room discussions are designed to clarify assigned materials, integrate knowledge from general education into nursing practice, identify concepts to be used in a variety of situations, allow students to be an active participant in learning and cultivate critical thinking in nursing students. Case studies and classroom activities permit application of new knowledge and integration of previous knowledge. The discussions will 4

5 include concepts related to the learning objectives of the unit and applying the concepts in a variety of fashions. 5

6 Course Competencies (criteria are found in the unit learning plans) 1. Evaluate nursing care for clients with pain and alterations in comfort. 2. Evaluate nursing care for clients with alterations in fluid and electrolyte balance. 3. Evaluate nursing care for clients with alterations in acid-base balance. 4. Evaluate nursing care for clients with acute alterations in the respiratory system. 5. Evaluate nursing care for clients with chronic alterations in the respiratory system. 6. Evaluate nursing care for clients with coronary artery disease. 7. Evaluate nursing care for clients with other alterations in the cardiovascular system. 8. Evaluate nursing care for clients with alterations in the endocrine system. 9. Evaluate nursing care for clients with alterations in hematology. 6

7 Core Abilities The MSTC faculty and administrators have worked with representatives from business and industry to identify four skills that are essential to your success in obtaining and keeping a job. You will work towards obtaining and improving these skills in all your courses. By helping you develop the core abilities and holding you responsible for their application; your teachers will help you increase the likelihood of career success. A. Acts with integrity, which means that you possess a sense of social, professional and work ethics; and that you demonstrate maturity, responsibility, dependability, and respect for others. In general, you apply a collection of commonly accepted ethical standards for appropriate conduct in professional areas. Indicators: The learner 1. Treats others with dignity and respect 2. Follows the student code of conduct and established rules, regulations and policies 3. Acts in an honest and truthful manner 4. Maintains professional boundaries 5. Assumes responsibility for own actions 6. Works and behaves ethically 7. Displays a positive attitude 8. Assumes shared responsibility for collaborative work B. Communicates effectively, which means that you apply appropriate writing, speaking, reading, and listening skills in order to precisely convey information, ideas, and opinions. Indicators: The learner 1. Participates in group discussions 2. Utilizes appropriate chain of command when communicating 3. Writes and speaks so others can understand 4. Uses proper communications etiquette 5. Uses active listening skills 6. Plans, researches, and edits. C. Demonstrates effective critical and creative thinking, which means that you apply the principles and the strategies of purposeful, active, organized thinking. This includes the use of interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation and self-regulation. Indicators: The learner 1. Refines decision-making 2. Identifies and utilizes appropriate resources for problem solving 3. Applies previously acquired knowledge to new tasks/problems 4. Identifies relationships between theory and clinical 5. Uses a structured problem-solving approach (the nursing process) 6. Demonstrates open-mindedness 7. Organizes information 7

8 D. Demonstrates global and social awareness, which means that you demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to the impact that activities in one part of the world have on the rest of the world. These activities may be economic, political, environmental, social, cultural or physical in nature. This ability necessarily implies a knowledge of systems and cultures different from one's own. Indicators: The learner 1. Recognizes own personal beliefs and biases, 2. Recognizes cultural and gender differences in order to provide individualized care 3. Demonstrates awareness of current world events that impact health care. 8

9 Course Grading Policy 1. Grades will be determined with the following weighing of activities: Online Unit Exams 4 total (Units 1, 2, 4, & 5)... 10% each (or 40% total) Proctored Mid-term (35 questions from Unit 3)... 20% Proctored Final (40 questions from Unit 6)... 20% Online Ticket In... (average of all 13) 15% Evidence Based Nursing Care... 5% TOTAL % 2. The following standards must be met: a. to successfully complete a nursing course a student must earn a grade of a C (80%) or above. A student who does not receive at least a grade of C must repeat the course before progressing further in nursing courses.note: Except for the final grade, all coursework with a score ending in 0.5 and above will be rounded to the next whole number. The final course score will not be rounded. b. in order to pass the course the student MUST have a solid 80% average or greater on unit and final exams.the exams will be weighted as described above for averaging. Failing to meet this standard will result in a D course grade if the course average is greater than 80. c. in the event a student does not pass a unit exam with a minimum of 80%, the student will be required to meet with the instructor to assess individual circumstances, blocks to learning, and previous test taking history. Recognizing that the application of classroom learning is crucial to safe nursing practice and successful completion of the licensure exam, retake exams will not be allowed.it is the responsibility of the student to make an appointment with the instructor to discuss the failed exam. d. the ticket-inmust be completed according by the identified due dates. f. all nursing program standards will be followed. See the Evaluation Policy in the Handbook for more specific details. 3. A letter grade will be assigned on the following percentages: A % A % B % B % B % C % C % C % D % D % D % F 69.99% and below 9

10 4. Extra credit can be earned in this course according to Policy Proof of participation in the activity must be provided by the last day of the course. Proof provided later than that date will not count toward extra credit earned. 10

11 Course Expectations and Policies 1. Attendance - You will be expected to be in class on time and to attend scheduled theory periods. Occasional absence from class may be unavoidable because of illness, sick children, inclement weather, etc. If absence is unavoidable, the instructor must be notified before class of the absence. The attendance policy for the will apply to this course. 2. Class Participation - You will be expected to actively participate in class discussion. 3. Written Assignments - You will be expected to hand in written assignments by the start of the class period on the due date. Any assignment submitted later than the end of the class period will be considered late. Any written assignment will have 5% of the value of the assignment deducted for each working day a paper is late. An extension will only be provided if the instructor is notified prior to the due date of the extraordinary circumstance that prevents you from completing the assignment on time. It is at the discretion of the instructor grading the activity as to whether an extension will be granted. Any late Ticket In will have a minimum of 20% of the value of the assignment deducted from the score.. 4. Missed Exams - You will be expected to complete exams during the scheduled time period. If you are unable to complete the exam as scheduled, you must take the exam within one week of the test date. Please see the instructor to schedule a time. Subsequent exams not completed during the schedule time will have 5 points deducted from the exam score. See Evaluation Policy ADN Student Handbook - Student expectations are discussed in detail in the ADN Student Handbook. 6. Disability - If you know that you have a recognized disability, or suspect that you might have one, it is your responsibility to identify yourself as soon as possible to the Disability Staff in Student Affairs. Course standards will not be lowered but various kinds of accommodations are available to you. Adequate and reasonable time will be required to develop and provide appropriate accommodations, so contact Disability Services as soon as possible. It is MSTC s goal to assist you in your individual educational plan. 7. Testing Accommodations You must notify the instructor the first week of classes if you require testing accommodations. It is your responsibility to arrange appointments with the Testing Center for all paper/pencil tests.. You should make appointments for all tests for this course within the first week of class. You can refer to the course calendar which will provide you with all testing dates. Once you have scheduled all of the testing dates, please inform the instructor of the dates. If the Testing Center cannot accommodate you during the time when the exam should be taken, arrangements should be made to complete the exam prior to the rest of the class, rather than after the assigned date. Remember, you represent the nursing department and professional behavior at the testing center is absolutely expected. On the date of the test, you are expected to report to the Testing Center on time and return to the classroom on time to participate in the lecture. 11

12 8. Any Problems or Concerns - If you are having difficulty achieving unit competencies and learning objectives see your instructor in their office as soon as possible to discuss the problem. You do not need to have a recognized disability to seek help from your instructor. Take initiative to contact your instructor. Don t assume your instructor knows you desire some assistance. 9. Academic Honesty - The Mid-State Technical College Board, administration, faculty, and staff believe that academic honesty and integrity are fundamental to the mission of higher education. All students are expected to maintain and promote the highest standards of personal honesty and professional integrity. These standards apply to all examinations, assigned work, and projects. Therefore, a student who is found to have been dishonest, fraudulent, or deceptive in the completion of work or willing to help others to be so or who is found to have plagiarized (presented the work of others as his or her own) is subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension. (Approved by the Deans Council May 15, 2002) 10. Test Taking Etiquette a. Be on time. If you are more than five minutes late for a test do not come into the classroom. The student will make arrangements with the instructor to take the test. Late points will apply per policy. b. Be prepared for the test by having all supplies out before the test begins. Have all pens, pencils, calculators, tissue, etc. out of your backpack before the test begins. Sharpen pencils before the test begins. c. All electronic devices will be turned off during a test. Use of the vibrate mode is not allowed because it can be a distraction. d. Please exit the room quietly. e. Please do not gather outside the classroom. You may return to the classroom when asked by the instructor to return. f. To avoid distracting those taking the test with zippers, snaps, or buckles please quietly take your purse, backpack, jacket etc. outside the classroom when you complete the test, if needed. g. No eating during a test. All beverages must be opened before the test begins. h. Once the test begins you are not permitted to leave the room until your test is completed. 11. Cell Phones: ALL cell phones must be turned off while in class. If you are anticipating an emergency call, please inform the instructor of the need to have the phone kept on. The ringtone should be turned off while waiting for the emergency call. Any calling or texting must be limited to break time. 12. Recording classes: With prior approval, students may audio record lectures to enhance their understanding of the topics presented. Audio recordings are not substitutes for attending class. If you choose to record lectures, you must follow these terms: 12

13 Recordings are not to be distributed without the permission of the instructor. This includes sharing via the Internet, peer to peer file sharing, or other methods. Recordings are not to be shared with other classmates unless they are to be used in collaborative assignments, or if the instructor approves sharing for other reasons. You will turn off recorders at the request of instructor. Video recording or other picture taking is not allowed. Non-compliance with these terms violates an instructor s intellectual property rights. Students violating this agreement will be subject to disciplinary actions under the Student Code of Conduct. 13
