Lewinson-Evans MSN,RN 1900 Pressler, Ste. 312, Rm. 309 Houston, Texas Office: (713) Pager: (281) Charmaine.lewinson-evans@hccs.edu Office hours: M-F 2:00-4:00 p.m. Prerequisite/s Successful completion of all Level I Course Co-requisite/s: VNSG 1266/1331 Course Description: Application of the nursing process to the care of the adult patient experiencing medical surgical conditions on the health-illness continuum. A variety of health care settings are utilized. VNSG 1409 is an introduction of common health problems requiring medical and surgical intervention. This course prepares the student to use the nursing process in the patient-centered care of persons experiencing stressors to the respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, fluid and electrolyte, hematological, and immune systems. Oncological stressors will also be covered. The emphasis is on using evidenced based data to guide clinical practice. The patient s developmental stage and individual needs are assessed and incorporated into the plan of care which is devised to support and strengthen the adaptive response of the patient. The role and competencies of the professional vocational nurse as they relate to caring, safety, patient advocacy, and teaching are applied to the adult patient within the context of the health-care team.

2 Course Objectives Following completion of this course the student w ill be able to: 1. Develop a patient-centered care plan, using the nursing process, for the adult patient experiencing stressors to the respiratory cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, fluid and electrolyte, hematological, and immune systems to include oncological stressors. 2. Incorporate the patient s developmental stage and unique needs into the plan of care. 3. Create a teaching plan centered on health promotion and risk reduction for a specified common health problem related to the adult patient. 4. Describe the physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy, and management of specified conditions in the adult patient. 5. Associate pertinent competencies to the patient-centered care of an adult individual experiencing stressors to the respiratory cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, fluid and electrolyte, hematological, and immune systems including oncological stressors (DEC, 2010). (See attached list). 6. Discuss professional nurse role behaviors, to include caring, safety, and advocacy, as they relate to the patient-centered care of the adult patient within the context of the health-care team. Content/Unit Outline: I. Respiratory Disorders including Epistaxis, Lung CA, pleural effusion, laryngitis, COPD,ARDS II. Cardiovascular Disorders- HTN/MI/CAD/Myocarditis/Arterial/Venous insufficiencies III. Endocrine Disorders- pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, diabetes IV. Reproductive Disorders menstruation disturbances, infections of the female reproductive tract, endometriosis, hysterectomy, breast CA, fibroids, prostate disorders, testicular CA, STD s. Also included are fluid and electrolyte imbalances, hematological disorders, anemia, lymphoma leukemia, and auto immune disorders. Powerpoint presentations, NCLEX questions, cartoon activities Methods and Standards of Evaluation: Exams 1. Four (4) unit exams-multiple choice with 50 questions per a one (1) hour exam 2.A comprehensive final exam 100 questions; two (2) hours will be provided EGLS3- Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey system At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is necessary to teaching and learning. During a designated time, you will be asked to answer a short online surve y of research based questions related to instruction. The anonymous results of the surve y will be made available to your professors and division chairs for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the surve y as part of the Houston Community College Student system online near the end of the term.

3 The course grade will be calculated as follows: Examinations (4) % Final Examination % Total % GRADING SYSTEM = A = B = C* = D* Below 60 = F A mini mum of 75% must be obtained in all VNSG classes. No grades will be rounded. No exceptions. See VNSG Handbook p. 27 ALL EXAM S ARE ADMINISTERED ON LINE. Examination Policy see VNSG Handbook p. 29 ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students who are absent more than 2 classroom days (8 hours) including tardiness, absences, and leaving early, from the course will be administratively withdrawn. You must visit with a faculty advisor, a counselor, or online student services representative at prior to withdrawing from the class. This must be done prior to March24, 4:30 pm the designated date to receive a W on your transcript. After that deadline, you will receive a grade of F. See VNSG Handbook p. 26 for attendance, p.34 for withdrawal. Scans Objectives: VNSG 1409 covers Personal Qualities - Self-Management This competency is accomplished in the clinical arena.
