2 Course Content: This course focuses on pathophysiology as it relates to acute disease and illness of clients across the lifespan, specfically the care of the client experiencing acute illness including nursing interventions and treatment options. Implications of the acute exacerbation of chronic illness will be addressed. Cultural diversity in healing practices will be explored as well as evidenced informed research and practice.. Course Format: 51 hours Lecture Course Prerequisites: Successful completion of all Level 3 theory courses ( PNUR 211, PNUR 221, PNUR 231, PNUR 241, PNUR 261)and PNUR 271: Level 3 Consolidated Practice Experience. Course Co-requisites: PNUR 222: Professional Communication 4; PNUR 242: Health Promotion 4; PNUR 212: Professional Practice 4; PNUR 262: Integrated Nursing Practice 4. Explain pathophysiology as it relates to selected common acute illness of clients across the lifespan. 2. Explain the pathophysiology and *nursing management of shock (cardiogenic, hypovolemic, neurogenic, anaphylactic and septic). 3. Recognise and explain the pathophysiology and *nursing management of fluid and electrolyte imbalances. 4. Explain *nursing management of common acute disease and acute exacerbations of acute illness of clients across the lifespan. 5. Identify traditional healing practices related to the acute illness experience. 6. Describe the impact of cultural diversity in health and healing. 7. 7 Operational Details: College Policies: Attendance: Late Assignments: Missed Exams: Cheating/Plagiarism: Incomplete Grades: Northwest Community College has policies on Academic Appeals (including appeal of final grades), Student Conduct, Cheating and Plagiarism, Academic Probation and other educational issues. Copies of these and other policies are available on the Colleges Website. Refer to the Practical Nursing Handbook for program policies and procedures. As adult learners, students are expected to attend all classes. Attendance will be taken. In the event of illness or other unavoidable cause of absence, the student is asked to notify the instructor. Students must give a reason for their absence. Students must attend all practicum/placement experiences. If an unavoidable absence occurs, the student must notify the agency and appropriate instructor, as soon as possible, prior to the time s/he is expected. Students absent for more than 10% of scheduled Integrated Nursing Practice theory/lab/clinical experience and consolidated practice experience may be asked to withdraw from the program.. Students asbsent for more than 10% of their preceptorship during the scheduled time frame may receive an incomplete. Students requiring an extension on the due date of an assignment should negotiate it with the instructor, at least 48 hours in advance of the due date. Assignments handed in late without an approved extension may not be accepted, and may be graded as a failed assignment. Students unable to write an exam on the scheduled day will need to discuss this with the instructor prior to the exam being written to make arrangements. Missed exams will be given a 0%. Plagiarism is the presentation of another person's words, ideas, interpretations, insights, or order of points as your own. All work submitted must be your own words and content, and not written by a tutor or friend. Whenever you use sources for an essay, or assignment, you must avoid plagiarism by documenting them. The College policy on Cheating and Plagiarism found on the college website establishes procedures for plagiarised assignments. All courses in the Practical Nursing Program must be successfully completed in order to obtain the Practical Nursing Diploma and be eligible to write the national licensing exam. A student who has already failed a course, re-entered the program, repeated it and passed, and then fails another course will be removed entirely from the program and can only re-enter by going through the admission process and beginning at term one. 8 Re-entering the program is dependent on an available seat and at the discretion of the practical nursing department. Students who fail a required course may be asked to complete a learning assessment and/or skills or written exam prior to being considered for readmission. The PN course work must be completed within 5 years of admission to the program. In the event of significant changes to courses, students may require to repeat a course. Students may be required to demonstrate that they have maintained their knowledge and skills for re-entry into the program. In the event that a student is unsuccessful in a consolidated practice experience they will be required to repeat the previous Integrated Nursing Practice course upon re-entry to the program.
