3 Safety and wellbeing strategy The safety and wellbeing of our people are fundamental to our pursuit of excellence in education and research. This strategy describes the University s approach to the management of safety and wellbeing. It identifies areas for focused attention that supports the University to achieve its strategic goals. Objective Our overall objective is to create a positive safety culture that enables our people to thrive and realise their full potential as part of a healthy and engaged community. Guiding principles At the University of Sydney, safety and wellbeing are considered during the planning of all our activities. This consideration is guided by: 1. Engagement with the people involved in or affected by, our work 2. Applying a risk-based approach. Strategic objectives 1. Build a positive safety culture 2. Prevent fatalities and serious injuries 3. Reduce the frequency and impacts of injury and ill health 4. Enhance overall wellbeing Page 1

6 Strategy implementation Page 4 The University of Sydney Safety and wellbeing strategy sydney.edu.au The Safety Health and Wellbeing team will support, and at times lead, the implementation of this strategy by working with the University community to carry out work in each of the key focus areas. Enabling safety leadership Safety Differently. Enable safety by challenging the way we think. Apply an appreciative approach to leadership that focuses on understanding the reality of work as it is done. Strive to keep safety front of mind by prompting our leaders to have genuine conversations about safety and wellbeing when making decisions and planning work. Simplifying tools and processes Work with Information and Communications Technology (ICT), our faculties and multidisciplinary institutes (MDIs) to further develop and implement the suite of simple-to-apply safety tools and workflows that support the work of the University. Quality investigations Lead quality ICAM (Incident Cause Analysis Method) investigations for high potential consequence safety incidents. Recognise the role that well designed investigations play in developing a strong proactive safety culture. Treat every investigation as a unique opportunity to learn. Hazardous materials Lead the University s approach to the management of hazardous materials in research and teaching to transform the way in which chemicals, biological materials and radioactive substances are procured, used and disposed of. Continue to focus on work with hazardous chemicals and scientific gases. Refine, communicate and support the implementation of new safety standards for working with biological and radioactive materials. Off-campus activities Work with our faculties and portfolios to manage safety in an increasingly mobile work and learning environment. Support the planning and management of student placements, fieldwork and other high risk travel. Emergency management Work with our leaders and appointed emergency responders to prepare our staff and students to respond to incidents that require an emergency response. Support the University s Emergency Planning Committee to plan and practise our responses to plausible University emergencies. Preventing common injuries Analyse high frequency incident and injury types, identify likely causes and experiment with initiatives to disrupt current patterns of injury. Constantly focus on driving down negative impacts of common injuries.
7 Safety of the built environment Partner with Campus Infrastructure and Services (CIS) to ensure that we provide a safe physical environment for the University community to work and learn in. Focus on aspects of how our people interact with our built environments, especially those that link to the wellbeing of our staff or students or are associated with common injuries. Support the safe design and operation of facilities and the management of high risk construction and maintenance work. Early intervention Proactively identify health and wellbeing issues that have the potential to cause serious illness, long periods of absence from work or study and reduced productivity. Reach out to affected staff and work areas to devise and support resolution where there is high likelihood of disruption. Return to health Provide support to all staff and their managers experiencing reduced work capacity, independent of cause or type of illness, to plan an active recovery while remaining engaged and at work. Work with Human Resources to ensure that all aspects of a person s recovery at work are incorporated into return to work planning. An integrated approach to health and wellbeing Continue the development of an evidence based Wellbeing Framework designed to meet the needs of both staff and students. Work with University leaders to integrate the consideration of wellbeing within policy, systems and program delivery. Partnering with Healthy Sydney University Partner with Healthy Sydney University (HSU) to investigate the effectiveness of our existing wellbeing programs and implement wellbeing strategies derived from or supported by HSU research. Lead by example through contribution as a member of HSU Executive. Psychological wellbeing Establish an environment where purposeful psychological wellbeing is integrated and supports our cultural aspirations. Implement evidence based initiatives to promote and sustain a mentally healthy work and learning environment. Support and fund the Wellbeing Champions network. Embed wellbeing as a core capability for all leaders. Page 5 Strategy implementation
