2 Inspire Health is published by Upland Hills Health, 800 Compassion Way, Dodgeville, as a communication connection with the communities we serve. The goal is to share information that may inspire readers to improve their health. Lisa Schnedler President/CEO Tina White Marketing and Community Relations Director To share your patient stories,or request future newsletter topics, contact Tina White at Upland Hills Health begins major building renovation There s something special happening here! Upland Hills Health (UHH) has consistently sought to be a healthcare destination that mirrors the needs and values of the communities it serves. As the community s needs evolved and as new technology has become available, buildings and programs have been added to accommodate that growth. For example, in 2002, together we addressed the needs of our citizens by building our Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Physician Specialty Clinic and our Heart, Lung & Sleep Center. In 2009, we added a new medical office building, Therapy & Wellness Center, imaging area, pharmacy and improved our main entrance. Now we are being called on to complete a significant construction project that will position the hospital for the next 30 years. This project is particularly important for the long-term well-being of the hospital. The landscape of healthcare is changing. To remain a vital part of our community and continue offering services close to home, we need to take this step forward. A SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT Lisa Schnedler, President & CEO Upland Hills Health, Inc. We conducted a detailed study of our current capacity and the community s projected needs for the next 50 years. The study helped us set our priorities, revealing several areas that demand our immediate attention and identifying care areas that are expected to need additional capacity in the future. Our hospital is well-maintained and attractive. Even so, we are facing challenges that may not be immediately visible. To maintain excellent service to our community we must address the current and future needs outlined on the next page. STATEMENT OF NONDISCRIMINATION Upland Hills Health complies with applicable federal civil rights laws and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, or sex. 3 STELLAR SURGICAL SPACES We re going to expand our surgical area. Why? Surgical spaces built today require twice the space as in the past. Our new surgical area will be designed to accommodate state-of-the art equipment, more operating space and larger recovery bays. BETTER BIRTHING SUITES A C-section suite will be built within the OB area, and our new birthing suites will be large, to meet the expectations of growing families. Why? When an emergency C-Section is needed, we must move as swiftly as possible. A fully equipped C-section suite right next to the birthing mom s room will help to bring baby into the world efficiently. A FLEXIBLE AND EFFICIENT FACILITY New construction will allow us to deliver more healthcare services in the center of our campus. Why? Centrally-located reception areas will reduce walking distances, and enable us to offer assistance and eliminate the frustration of not knowing where to go, or missing an appointment Our specialist physicians will be able to walk out of their clinics down a short hallway and onto the hospital floor Space for future growth will make future projects less costly YOUR FAMILY, OUR PROMISE BUILDING ON EXCEPTIONAL CARE The two phases of our improvement project are expected to cost $32 million. The first phase is currently underway as we make a series of moves designed to make way for expansion. This project will impact our entire community by providing critical care close to home. Upland Hills Health continues to deliver on a promise that goes back over 100 years...to provide exceptional healthcare to our communities. We are planning to be here for another century and beyond. 4 Interviews with staff about the upcoming building project Brad Jebbia, Surgical Services Director Our surgical space is meeting our needs now, I don t want to give the impression that it s not. But we are excited about the efficiencies that the new space will bring. We will be able to accommodate more patients. It s going to be great for families because there will be a nice, central place to wait. The waiting room will be private and reserved for surgical patients and their families. The surgical spaces will be larger, so employees will have more space to move around. The equipment will be suspended on booms, instead of placed on the floor, so the equipment will be easier to manipulate. I m looking forward to an Integrated Operating Room concept. This will allow images (X-rays) to be brought up on the monitor that is right at the surgical field, this will let physicians consult with other physicians easily. Ryan Teasdale, Facilities Director Ryan is the person in charge of coordinating the upcoming building project, communicating with Kahler & Slater, the architects, and Findorff, the company contracted to build our new spaces. Ryan has the advantage of having a bird s eye view on this project. We plan to upgrade both interior and exterior signage throughout our entire campus. Our goal is to improve the clarity and visibility of signs everywhere, from the parking lots, to clinics, to restrooms. We are essentially building an activity hub in the center of our campus. Patients will be able to access more services closer to a main entrance efficiency will improve dramatically. Timothy Raichle, MD OB/GYN Our hospital is full of caring people that truly have the best interest of the patients we serve in mind. This is what first attracted me to move my practice to Upland Hills Health. Then, when I learned that this hospital would undergo a remodel, my decision was made! I see a great opportunity for Upland Hills Health to continue to provide superior care in a facility that matches the much larger systems around us. The operating rooms will be updated, as well as the spaces where time is spent before and after procedures. These spaces will be private, roomy and comforting. This is important for patients and the providers who are taking care of them. When you need care you are often at your most vulnerable. It is more important than ever to exceed expectations at this time. I came to Upland Hills Health to practice Obstetrics & Gynecology. I believe the patient experience will improve with these renovations and we will see an enhanced ability to attract and recruit top physicians and staff for you. 5 Dr. Maria Sandgren, OB/GYN When it comes to women s health... let s face it... we re talking about personal stuff here! The health issues that women encounter may be very personal indeed, but remember, what may seem like a difficult topic is everyday conversation for our OB/GYN team. It s not always easy to discuss these things, but that s what we are here for. The more open and honest you are, the more your doctor can help you improve your quality of life! Try these conversation starters: My friend said that my painful periods were not normal. What can I do? The pill seems to be making me feel awful most of the time. Are there other options? I m wearing a pad all the time because I can t seem to do much of anything without peeing. Is there anything that can be done about this? Dr. Barbara Hostetler, OB/GYN Call to schedule an appointment in Dodgeville or Mount Horeb. We ll listen. We respect your privacy. A candid conversation with Dr. Sandgren. Listen in! Dr. Sandgren explains some of the difficult (and sometimes startling) health issues that can occur in mid-life. Her gentle and honest style of conversation is easy and informative. Listen in. You may realize it s possible to get your quality of life back. uplandhillshealth.org/letstalk Dr. Timothy Raichle, OB/GYN UplandHillsHealth.org 5

6 Find your career in healthcare! Upland Hills Health Clinic in Mount Horeb hosted staff from the Mount Horeb School District as they set out to learn more about businesses in their own backyard. Their mission is to be better prepared to advise students as they plan their future. We were delighted to host the group and help them learn about the broad range of jobs available in healthcare, the education required, and the personal characteristics needed for success. Lisa Schnedler, President of Upland Hills Health pointed out, It takes many people, and many different skill sets to run a hospital and clinics. In addition to doctors and nurses, we employ people with expertise in fitness, therapy, accounting, food service, marketing, customer service, administration, purchasing, science, logistics, construction, mechanics, data, technology, and much more. A career in healthcare provides many opportunities for your life, whereever you choose to live. Services provided at the UHH Mount Horeb Clinic continue to expand. Most insurance plans are accepted. Upland Hills Health accepts Quartz (formerly Unity and Physicians Plus), Dean Health Plan, plus many more. Same day or next day appointments are often possible. Thursday evening appointments are available for primary care. Call UHH Employee Spotlight Kayla Watson, Environmental Services Kayla is establishing her career with a focus on healthcare. 7 Upland Hills Health Foundation provided the funding for the Pediatric Stepping Stones shown here. Watch for developmental milestones as your child grows Smiling for the first time and taking a first step are called developmental milestones. Developmental milestones are things most children can do by a certain age. From 2 months to 5 years of age, it is important to pay attention to how children play, learn, speak, act, and move. If a child is not able to do the things appropriate for their age, it may mean they need extra help. Identifying a developmental delay early is important. With help and special exercises, kids can often overcome these physical delays. Your family doctor can help you learn how to look for developmental milestones and what to do if you re worried about your child s development. Kari Tranel is a Physical Therapist at Upland Hills Health who specializes in pediatric physical therapy. Kari suggested talking to your doctor if you notice that your child, seems to struggle with keeping up with their peers seems to be losing physical skills or going backward struggles with balance and coordination struggles with eye-hand coordination If these areas seem out of the ordinary for your child s age, talk to your family doctor. A physical therapist may be able to provide fun activities that will help your child with coordination, balance and strength. A speech therapist may also help your child with difficult sounds and pronunciations. The Center for Disease Control provides a useful guide for the milestones to look for as your child grows. 9 Are you thinking it may be time for a new knee? Ask questions. If you ve made the decision to have knee surgery, our Orthopedic Team, Dr. Self and Melissa Messer, PA-C, recommend learning as much as you can about the product that will be used for your new knee. Dr. Self has a master s degree in mechanical engineering in addition to his medical degree. He explains that almost all products used to perform knee replacement surgeries today can be described as being custom-designed but they are not all equal. Evaluate your options. Dr. James Self has over 20 years experience and fellowship training at Mayo Clinic Melissa Messer PA-C Not all custom knee products are equal. Important questions to ask: 1. What product will be used for your joint and how is it customized? 2. How long has this product been on the market? 3. How long has it been tested and how long is it expected to last? You may also want to know: 4. How many knee surgeries has this orthopedic team performed? 5. Is the physician board certified? 6. What happens after surgery? Our orthopedic team uses the JOURNEY II with VERILAST Technology made by Smith & Nephew. The JOURNEY II knee system is unique. It combines the stability and natural motion of the human knee with new low-friction materials that were tested 9 times longer than the industry standard. The JOURNEY II Knee is designed to reproduce the internal shapes of the human knee through its full range of motion. It allows the same swing-and-rotate motion your real knee uses now. This means your muscles won t have to adjust to new shapes after surgery and your stride can return to its natural rhythm. The JOURNEY II Knee also reproduces the stability provided by the ligaments around your knee. These ligaments are key to the stability of your real joint and create natural motion when your knee is fully straight and fully bent. No other knee implant reproduces these functions so well. ComfortInMotion Therapy Team A personalized approach There is no getting around the fact that achieving more comfort in your knees is going to require work and movement. The support that is available to you can make all the difference. By choosing to rehabilitate your knee at Upland Hills Health, you ll have the ComfortInMotion Team on your side. You will be invited to meet with our team of physical therapists and athletic trainers BEFORE surgery. You will also meet your personal care coordinator. This physical therapist is assigned specifically to you, to answer the questions you may have as you are guided through your surgery and getting the strength and movement back in your knee. 10 Chest pain. Shortness of breath. Medication isn t helping. Surgery isn t an option. There is help for your heart. EECP Therapy is giving quality of life back EECP stands for Enhanced External Counterpulsation. 35 hours of EECP therapy is providing reduced angina symptoms for up to 3 years. 74% of patients receiving therapy experience benefits 35 hours of therapy costs about 1/3 of the cost of stent surgery, 1/5 of the cost of bypass surgery It is covered by Medicare and most insurance plans Only seven hospitals in Wisconsin provide this highly effective treatment. It is available in Dodgeville, at Upland Hills Health. EECP Therapy works by increasing the blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle, decreasing the amount of work the heart has to do to pump blood to the rest of the body. Find out if you are a candidate for EECP Therapy by taking a simple survey online at eecp.com/are-you-a-candidate.php. Then talk to your doctor. Laughter is the best medicine! Laughing gas used in the ER can reduce anxiety The Emergency Department at Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville began using nitrous oxide in August It can help patients experience less anxiety or pain during minor procedures in the ER, explained Dr. Michael Foley of Madison Emergency Physicians (MEP). It is particularly valuable when caring for children since it avoids the use of a needle. Nitrous oxide is a gas administered with a mask, thus avoiding an IV. He describes nitrous oxide as a bridge between no medication and sedation, for procedures such as minor fracture care, sutures or burns. This is an additional tool for physicians to use for patients and situations in emergency medicine, he said. MEP provides board-certified physicians to Upland Hills Health s Emergency Department. Upland Hills Health Foundation with the help of Madison Emergency Physicians provided the funding for the nitrous oxide unit in the ED. Pictured at right, Dr. Hansen, MEP and Wendell Hamlin, RN look on as respiratory therapist, Crystal Knapp demonstrates administering nitrous oxide to a patient. 10 Inspire Health DECEMBER 2017

11 Prevention is the key to reducing or managing diabetes Diabetes can be a serious disease and is becoming a problem epidemic in the United States. Prevention is the best medicine. Diabetes affects over 30 million children and adults in the United States that s 1 in 11 Americans. There are four important things you can do to keep diabetes at bay. 1. Control Your Weight Being overweight makes you 20 to 40 times more likely to develop diabetes than someone with a healthy weight. 2. Get Moving Working your muscles more often improves your ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. Studies suggest that walking briskly for a half hour every day reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 30 percent. 3. If You Smoke, Quit. Smokers are roughly 50 percent more likely to develop diabetes than nonsmokers, and heavy smokers have an even higher risk. 4. Tune Up Your Diet Four dietary changes can make a big impact on the risk of type 2 diabetes: 1. Increase the fiber in your diet by eating more whole fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fiber has been shown to decrease spikes in blood sugar and help the body manage blood sugars better. 2. Skip the sugary drinks, and choose water, coffee, or tea instead. Sugary drinks, such as regular soda, juice and energy drinks cause blood sugars to spike, provide no nutritional value, and can add weight. 3. Choose healthy, unsaturated fats, such as olive and canola oils, nuts, seeds, nut butters and fish. Avoid the unhealthy, trans fats or hydrogenated oils in processed snack foods, fast food and fried foods. 4. Limit the red meat you eat. Avoid hot dogs and sausages. Meet Jackie Wilkinson! 13 Lisa Schnedler, President & CEO Upland Hills Health, Inc. UHH is working to acquire property in Mineral Point I am happy to announce that UHH has entered into a purchase agreement for property between Highway 23 and Business Park Road, in Mineral Point. We are expecting to take ownership early in In the four years I have served as CEO of Upland Hills Health, and in previous years, our Board of Trustees has clearly stated the vision for the hospital: Upland Hills Health is here to serve our communities. We have focused on bringing healthcare services to areas of greatest need first, by establishing family medicine clinics where access to primary care was limited. Now that we have secured property suitable for expansion, we are looking at how we may better serve and support the Mineral Point community. Two committees have been formed to study and help determine healthcare services most needed in the Mineral Point area. Discussions will include members of other healthcare organizations within Mineral Point. We welcome your suggestions! Please submit your thoughts through our public website contact us page or by calling Our Board of Trustees has directed that the services must, 1) improve access to healthcare services, 2) serve defined needs, and 3) meet needs that are broadly desired by the community, while not competing with local clinics currently meeting those needs. These are very exciting times. We are eager to continue with our long-range plan and partnership to improve healthcare services in our surrounding communities. The Mineral Point community has supported our efforts for decades. We are delighted to start working on building additional services that will enhance the health of our friends and neighbors there.
