CACPT Play Therapy Certificate Training CACPT AGM and 2 Day Workshops APA Journals Internship and Supervision Filial Therapy Training Sandplay Therapy Training BCPTA Training Call for Research Papers PURPOSE: The mission of the Canadian Association for Child and Play Therapy (CACPT) is to promote the value of play, play therapy and the Certified Play Therapist designation and certified members in Canada. CACPT recognizes the value of research efforts as an important function within the missions of the Association: PROCESS: CACPT will award one research grant of $1,000 to a project involving current research in the area of play and play therapy for Applications must be received by CACPT not later than December 31, 2015 and the study or report of the study is to be completed and submitted by September 1, A decision regarding grant applications will be made by the Research Committee by February 15, The CACPT Research Committee will consider recommending for funding those research proposals which will likely: 1. make a scholarly contribution to the discipline in which the research is conducted, 2. contribute to the professional development of the CACPT member conducting

2 the investigation, 3. be suitable for submission for publication, exhibition, or performance in the discipline in which the research is conducted and/or, 4. assist CACPT in conducting the research to apply for funding from sources outside the Association. For more information please contact: Elizabeth Sharpe CAE Executive Director, CACPT or Dr. Nancy Riedel Bowers CPT-S Chair, CACPT Research Committee (This is reprint of an article written this time last year for your information. With more and more new members joining CACPT and this question arising often, we felt that another read of this article might be helpful.) The Difference Between the Professional College and the Professional Association Many Certified members of CACPT are also members of a regulated provincial "College" in the various provinces and territories across Canada. As a fully Certified member of CACPT, there is a requirement that you be affiliated with the professional college that best represents your profession whether it be Social Work, Counselling, Psychotherapy or another medically related discipline. It is important to understand why you would belong to CACPT as well! In simple terms, the College is formed for the protection of the public. The Association is formed to support and protect the growth, advocacy, training and ongoing support of the member which is you. To elaborate and more specifically:

3 The Value of Belonging to the Association - Canadian Association for Child and Play Therapy (CACPT) CACPT is in place to speak on behalf of those practicing child psychotherapy and play therapy and to be the voice of the members for the profession provincially and federally. The ways in which CACPT is able to support its members are as follows: Engage with like-minded alliances and associations to advocate on behalf of the members for legislative reforms Provide critical analysis of government policies and practices that will impact the professional of child psychotherapy and play therapy in each province. Promote and enhance the understanding of play therapists in the clinical environment Promote the efficacy of play therapy through research in Canada and throughout the world. To support the member through the provision of training and continuing education programs. To engage in the practice of knowledge management for clinicians and therapists in order that they remain current in the profession. To Provide a place to network with play therapists in similar areas of practice. To access services and products specific to the field of play therapy. CACPT works for you, on your behalf as a professional play therapist. The Value of the Regulated College A regulatory body's primary duty is to serve and protect the public interest. Its mandate is to regulate the professional practice it represents and to govern its members. Regulation of a profession defines the practice of the profession and describes the boundaries within which it operates, including the requirements and qualifications to practice the profession. The primary mandate of any regulatory college is to protect the public interest from unqualified, incompetent or unfit practitioners. Regulation brings credibility to the profession. Practitioners of a regulated profession are subject to a code of ethics and standards of practice. Self-regulation allows a profession to act as an agent of the government in regulating its members because the government acknowledges that the profession has the special knowledge required to set standards and judge the conduct of its

4 members through peer review. CACPT as a Standard Setting Body Although CACPT is a professional association, it also sets standards and performs within a professional Code of Ethics very specific to play therapy and child psychotherapy, it goes one step further in providing its members with additional credibility specific to this field of practice through the self regulating. The Value of Certification as a CACPT Play Therapist We are often asked what the value of becoming a Certified Play Therapist through CACPT is. I prepared the following article to address some of the questions that arise day to day at the CACPT Headquarters: The Canadian Association for Child and Play Therapy (CACPT) serves as the professional association for the field of child psychotherapy and play therapy in Canada. CACPT was established to ensure qualified clinicians in the practice of child psychotherapy and play therapy. The Institute for Credentialing Excellence in Canada states that the primary focus of a professional certification program is on providing an independent assessment of the knowledge, skills, and/or competencies required for competent performance of an occupational or professional role or specific work-related tasks and responsibilities. The certification awarded through CACPT designates that Certified Play Therapists have demonstrated the requisite, work-related knowledge, skills, or competencies and met other requirements established by the CACPT Certification Committee. Being Certified as a Play Therapist through CACPT tells employers, clients and stakeholders that you have met a standard of excellence established by CACPT and that a governing body with representation from relevant stakeholders is charged with ongoing oversight of you, through the certification program. When Certified you are also required to continue your education through approved trainings throughout the year. This gives others confidence in your updated skills and abilities to practice as a Play Therapist in Canada. If you would like to learn more about CACPT Certification as a Play Therapist, you can contact: Elizabeth Sharpe, Executive Director Elizabeth@cacpt.com

For More Information: CACPT AGM and 2 Day Workshops - Winnipeg May 2016 Ecosystemic Play Therapy Dr. Kevin John O'Connor May 13 & 14, 2016 Winnipeg, MB Canada The Canadian Association for Child and Play Therapy is honoured to announce that Kevin John O'Connor, PhD, ABPP, RPT-S Clinical Psychologist and Director Emeritus of the Association for Play Therapy, will present a two day workshop on the subject of Ecosystemic Play Therapy at CACPT's Annual Meeting and Workshops in Winnipeg. In this workshop participants will be introduced to the basic elements of Ecosystemic Play Therapy (EPT) theory and practice. At the theoretical level EPT integrates a number of existing play therapy theories and techniques using cognitive developmental theory as an organizing framework while maintaining a broadly systemic perspective. The theory emphasizes the importance of considering the multiple systems in which the child is embedded when conceptualizing cases and designing interventions. At the practice level EPT is a goal-oriented model in which the play therapist works to help children find ways of getting their needs met effectively and appropriately. This is accomplished through the use of experiential and cognitive activities in play sessions that bring children to a new understanding of their life situation and, therefore, facilitate the development of a new repertoire of responses. Case examples demonstrating the design and implementation of both single play activities and entire play therapy sessions will be used to illustrate all the basic elements of EPT. Betty Bedard Bidwell Margo Sippel Play Therapy Internship & Supervision Advanced Internship Program The Internship Programs are taking in two settings: one in the Goderich area and the other is in Stratford. Supervision and support will be provided by Betty Bedard Bidwell and Margot Sippel. The internship programs have an open ended start and finish date; and are geared to what you are able to fulfill within your own personal schedule. We are aware that it is difficult to accommodate a set schedule when you are working, have a family as well as trying to complete your certification requirements. These internship programs are individually designed to fit your needs and requirements. Interns will have the opportunity to attend supervision once a month within pairs and or individually. Once every three months there will be day long supervision available and this will alternate between Goderich and or Stratford. The cost of this internship program will depend on how many hours of supervision and clinical hours you complete per month. During the placement you will be covered by the agency's Professional Liability Insurance and will pay for your Police Check. Supervision without the Internship Program The cost for a six hour supervision day that also includes lunch, hands on experiences as well as resources will be $ per person. Individual supervision is $50 per hour. The Intensive Filial Therapy Training Program developed by Risë VanFleet features the work of Filial Therapy originators, Drs. Bernard and Louise Guerney. 6:1 participant-to-leader ratio, experiential with direct observation and feedback from instructor. It is specifically designed so that participants can confidently and competently start using Filial Therapy with their clients following the training. 10 British Columbia Play Therapy Association APT Approved Provider # CACPT Approved Provider # PRESENTS: Monica Bhatara, MA, RTC, FOTT WORKING WITH CHILDREN, YOUTH AND ALL MY RELATIONS USING ABORIGINAL FOCUSING-ORIENTED THERAPY IN THE PLAY THERAPY ROOM October 24, 2015; 9:00am - 4:30pm Location: TBA Vancouver, BC ABOUT THE PRESENTER Monica Bhatara MA, RTC, FOTT, has been working with children, youth, adults and families as a therapist and community educator since She is certified as a Focusing---Oriented Trainer and Therapist with the Focusing Institute in New York and continues to be mentored by Shirley Turcotte. She has extensive post---graduate training in play and expressive therapies, as well as additional training specific to trauma, parenting, EMDR, and addictions within the family system. Monica was an active board member with the BC Play Therapy Association from and Board President from She brings many years of Play and Expressive Therapy experience to her work in counselling children and families. Monica continues to explore and integrate the applications of Focusing in Play and Expressive Therapies. Monica's private counselling practice is located in New Westminster and she also continues to provide therapeutic services in the non---profit sector. Her practice includes seeing both children and adult clients. ABOUT THE WORKSHOP This workshop explores the integration of Aboriginal Focusing-Oriented Therapy(AFOT) within Play and Expressive Therapy practices. Focusing---Oriented Therapy (FOT)is a body-centred and clientcentred approach to healing, developed three decades ago at the University of Chicago by Dr. Eugene Gendlin. Aboriginal Focusing---Oriented Therapy with Complex Trauma was developed by Vancouver based trauma expert Shirley Turcotte. Focusing, an experiential modality is a technique for getting in touch with deep inner, implicit wisdom that includes, but is much more than our thoughts and feelings. AFOT is a land---based adaptation of Focusing---Oriented Therapy. Grounded in "all my relations" philosophy, AFOT is especially effective for healing complex trauma, depression, body image issues, and anxiety. Focusing starts with the body and through the felt sense, clients can tap into not only their thoughts, but also their feelings, intuition and unconscious knowledge about an issue. It allows clients total control of the pace and direction of their healing journey. AFOT techniques can be used alone or integrated into a range of other treatment modalities to deepen and enrich the therapeutic process and are applicable to all cultures and age groups. Workshop participants will get an overview of FOT/AFOT and Aboriginal Psychotherapy. AFOT techniques will enhance a child therapist/professional's ability to work with complex trauma/issues, vicarious/intergenerational trauma, reduce disassociation and work with regression in therapy. The theoretical framework will shift away from Western paradigms of attachment, coping strategies and the therapeutic processes. Case studies and experiential capacity building will be included. Elder Arthur Lyle Leon will be joining us and bringing ceremony and song to this workshop. Art is Coast Salish from the unceded territories of the Chahalis Nation in BC located beside the Sto:lo territory. Art currently delivers wholistic programming that combines Indigenous Traditional Knowledge of health and healing through ceremonies.
