2 Course 1: Getting the Most Out of Supervision: Reasons and Expectations in Art Therapy, Counseling, the Creative Arts Therapies, Mental Health and Psychotherapy Saturday, October 21, 2017 This introductory course is geared towards art therapists, counselors, creative arts therapists and related mental health practitioners who have never supervised before but are interested and for those who have supervised before but have never taken a supervision course. Unlike some professions (i.e., social work), creative art therapists often supervise without formal training, particularly those who supervise creative art therapy trainees as on-site supervisors. 3 Course 2: Balancing the Administrative, Educational and Supportive: Best Practices for Supervisors and Supervisees Saturday, November 4, 2017 This course further explores the three aspects of supervision: administrative, educational, and supportive. In addition to drawing from our own experiences as supervisees, we will utilize theory as a way to deepen our supervision practice. 4 Course 3: Working with Difference: The Supervisory Triadic Relationship Saturday, December 2, 2017 Theoretical approaches that are cognizant of differences are useful in clinical relationships. Similarly, an approach that negates to address cultural differences, particularly race, can lead to similar microaggressions in the supervisory relationship at best or can be damaging at worst. Acknowledging and speaking about differences in supervision models ways of relating and understanding between clients and therapists. We are currently in an exciting time of practice, as scholars are introducing intersectionality, critical race theory, and critical race feminism into our fields and disciplines: in art therapy specifically and more broadly in the creative arts and psychology. We will discuss the limitations of multiculturalism (i.e., awareness, knowledge, and skills) and identify how to employ a more systemic and integrative paradigm into the practice of supervision. Modeling of addressing differences and raising difficult topics are considered in terms of the triadic relationship (i.e., supervisor supervisee client). 5 Course 4: Using the Arts and Creative Methods in Supervision Saturday, January 20, 2018 Scholar-practitioners assert that incorporating creative, art-based, methods into supervision offers similar valuable benefits for supervisees as it does for clients. Specifically aiding to improve case conceptualization skills, develop self-awareness, facilitate awareness of transference and countertransference, explore the supervisory relationship, reduce stress, and improve well-being. This highly interactive course will draw from art therapy, creative writing, sand play, and other creative practices as determined by the participants of the session. 6 Course 5: Professionalism, Ethics and Credentials: The Business and Administration of Supervision Saturday, February 10, 2018 One of the most challenging aspects of supervision is management. As therapists, our training is focused on supporting others and this aspect of supervision seemingly comes naturally. Similarly, the educative aspect can feel comfortable. Unfortunately, supervisors cannot avoid the business and administration aspects. Professional and ethical concerns include understanding, identifying, and the managing dual relationships, realizing our scope of practice and understanding the differences between therapy and supervision. Another aspect of the business side of being a supervisor is developing our professional identity, which includes maintaining credentials (including credentials to supervise!) and licensure, paperwork (i.e., documenting supervision encounters, supervision contracts), and related aspects.
