4 Career Talks Programme It s never too early to kick-start your career planning, and our programme of talks will help you do just that. Join experts from across practice areas to get insights into career paths that you re interested in and maybe those you haven t even considered yet. 2.15pm Room 2 Room 3 Neonates: Tiny Patients, Big Rewards Ever considered becoming a neonatal nurse? Maybe you haven t thought about it, or are unsure whether it s for you. Whatever stage you re at, come to get information about potential career pathways, learn about the benefits on offer and understand what it s like to be part of a neonatal network. You ll also get an insight into options for continuing learning and development throughout your career. Nursing in the Royal Navy The Royal Navy is only as good as its people, and Naval Nurses are an essential part of this. Whether you re at the scene of a natural disaster providing essential primary care, or tending to fellow crew members during peacetime, this is a career with a difference. Come to learn more about what s on offer, including unparalleled further study and travel opportunities. 2.45pm Opportunities in Post-Registration Education and Career Development The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requires all registered nurses to engage in continuing professional development activities. This session will provide ideas about how to achieve this through short courses, standalone modules and specialist pathways, including opportunities to complete BSc and MSc awards. Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Have you thought about a career in the field of public health nursing? If you're considering it (or even if you haven't), attend this session to find out about rewarding career options in health visiting and school nursing. 3.15pm The Midwifery Road Less Travelled Lisa Common studied midwifery as a mature student at the University of Nottingham, qualifying in Since then she has worked as a hospital midwife, a community midwife, a research midwife, and a lecturer in midwifery practising as far afield as Zambia and New Zealand. Come to hear about Lisa s midwifery road less travelled for career ideas and inspiration. Mercy Ships: Volunteers Bringing Hope and Healing in Africa Mercy Ships operates the world's largest civilian hospital ship, bringing free, life-changing surgical care to some of the world's poorest people. The M/V Africa Mercy is currently docked in Cameroon, performing surgeries on cases rarely seen in the West. Mercy Ships also builds a host country's capacity to deliver its own healthcare, to leave a sustainable impact. Find out how to get involved. 3.45pm A Day in the Life of a Practice Nurse What does a typical 'day in the life' of a practice nurse look like? Come to find out about this varied and diverse role, which includes caring for patients from the newborn to the elderly, and provides routes into advanced practice. You will also hear about nurse fellowships for newly qualified nurses keen on getting into general practice (primary care). Liaison Psychiatry: Mental Healthcare in a Physical Healthcare Setting Patients with psychological healthcare needs in addition to physical ones often experience slower diagnosis, longer hospital stays and poorer outcomes. With growing recognition that mental health difficulties should be treated with the same urgency as physical ones, there is a greater need for people who are trained and confident in identifying and dealing with these issues across all practice areas. This session will help you understand career opportunities in this area. 04
