2 Welcome to the NPSF Learning & Simulation Center To illustrate the use of medical simulation as a patient safety tool, the National Patient Safety Foundation has created a series of simulated clinical settings in a fictional context called Sunshine Regional Hospital. As you explore and interact at each station throughout the NPSF Learning & Simulation Center, consider how the experiences at Sunshine Regional Hospital can be applied to your own organization as you strive for safer care. The Learning & Simulation Center includes five core simulation demonstrations, as well as a series of exhibit booth presentations by NPSF partners that highlight their patient safety solution expertise. Use this booklet as a navigation tool to guide you through Sunshine Regional Hospital s simulated clinical settings. Each simulation will provide an opportunity to participate through discussion, demonstration and hands-on interaction to enhance learning, create a standard of care and implement patient safety principles. As you visit the simulation scenarios you will find that our demonstrations are designed to include active participation from all Congress attendees. Your involvement will be an integral part of the learning experience. Throughout this fair you will find demonstrations focused on highlighting important patient safety solutions. Avoiding Inadvertent Lung Volume Reduction During Endotracheal Suctioning Booth 507 Facilitation provided by: Ohio Medical Corporation This scenario will demonstrate the application of inadvertent oversuctioning to an intubated and ventilated lung model. Participants will discover the importance of appropriately occluding flow while setting vacuum pressure on a vacuum regulating device and how this maneuver prevents lung volume reduction from occurring.
