The program is also implemented for experienced RNs and/or LPNs who have not worked in the intraoperative setting for five years or more. 2 PAGE 2 Spring Internship Program cont d This Internship program is designed to equip nurses with fundamental skills that are critical for providing patient care in the operating room. The twelve week program includes three to five weeks (depending on class size) of the didactic portion of the program, consisting of classroom lectures, lab skills practice, and observational experiences followed by skill implementation in the operating room under the direction of a preceptor. Following completion of the fundamental component of the program, the Interns advance to service-line focused orientation concentrating on specific surgical procedures and equipment specific to the assigned specialty area. The final service specific orientation is evaluated on a week by week basis until successful completion of orientation criteria. In January we began our Spring 2011 Internship program and on April 8, 2011 we celebrated the completion of the fundamental portion of the program, awarding 21 Interns with completion certificates and honoring the preceptors who assisted them in the clinical experience. Eight preceptors were honored with preceptor award nominations and four were selected as award recipients. All of the Interns are now in their service lines completing their specialty orientation. Guadalajara, Mexico is where the Mexican Hat Dance, sombreros and mariachi music are believed to have originated. The vanilla bean comes from an orchid plant discovered by Mexican Indians. The world s largest crop of vanilla beans still comes from Mexico. Mexico City, Mexico s capital, is sinking at the rate of 4 to 12 inches a year. The city resides on a former island surrounded by a shallow lake, drained by Hernan Cortes when he captured the city.

8 PAGE 8 However you say it, just do it! Wash your hands! Lavarse las Manos! вымойте ваши Hand Washing Hero Helpful Hints: Any use of foam or soap is considered compliant by observers. Only a dime-sized portion of foam is needed per use. Wearing gloves does NOT eliminate the need to perform hand hygiene. Hand washing must be done upon entry and exit of patient environment as follows: - before threshold is crossed in ORs or private room, - at curtain line in a semi-private room, - before touching of a patient in a multi-patient room (i.e. PACU). For more information about the VUMC hand hygiene program, please visit: If you have any thoughts on how to improve compliance, please the hand hygiene committee at handhygiene@vanderbilt.edu.
