Neither have all the questios scietists will be poised to ask i the future. The Natioal Childre s Study (NCS), ow o the brik of implemetatio, is a first of its kid i the Uited States, trackig childre s health from womb to adulthood. Departmetal researchers will play a key role i this uprecedeted udertakig by leadig the Pacific Northwest Ceter, oe of 22 study ceters recetly aouced. The Natioal Istitutes of Health (NIH) grat to this ceter totals roughly $26 millio over five years. NCS, which will track 100,000 childre across the coutry from before birth to age 21, will be the largest log-term study of childre s health ad developmet ever coducted i the US. A study of this magitude is ecessary to begi uravelig the largely ukow meas by which diseases ufold, said Elaie Faustma, director of the study ceter ad professor i our departmet. The study will also help tease apart the complex iterplay betwee evirometal factors ad geetic iflueces that affect health. O the atioal level, NCS is led by a cosortium of agecies, icludig the Natioal Istitute of Child Health ad Huma Developmet, the Natioal Istitute of Evirometal Health Scieces, the Ceters for Disease Cotrol ad Prevetio, ad the US Evirometal Protectio Agecy. Why study Childre s Health? The major disorders ad diseases affectig childre today are markedly differet from several geeratios ago. I the past, ifectious diseases domiated, while today, childre face maily chroic coditios that researchers believe arise at the itersectio of evirometal exposure ad geetic makeup. NCS iitiated i respose to the Childre s Health Act of 2000 aims to reduce the public health burde of childhood chroic diseases ad disorders. This burde icludes ot oly pai ad sufferig, but also missed school days, health care expeses, ad other costs to childre, their families, ad society at large. Cogress specified that the study must be logitudial (log-term) i desig ad gauge ot oly chemical, biological, ad physical exposures, but also psychosocial factors such as public policy. The study s hypotheses were desiged aroud Lisa Youglove A ewbor child reflects a complex mix of geetic ad evirometal factors areas idetified durig the plaig process: pregacy outcomes, eurodevelopmet ad behavior, asthma, obesity ad growth, ijury, ad reproductive developmet. Additioally, data gathered ca be used to aswer questios that arise i the future. Researchers will also be able to assess health disparities ad differeces i disease occurrece betwee groups of people. recruitmet ad samplig The study will be carried out i 105 study locatios (couties or groups of couties) across the US. The probability-based approach used to select locatios meas that the study sample will reflect demographic ad geographic diversity, ad will represet a balace of rural ad metropolita areas. The study will follow pregat wome ad their parters, couples plaig pregacy, ad wome of childbearig age who are ot plaig pregacy. The childre of these participats will comprise the mai focus of the NCS. Recruitmet will occur primarily through household samplig, but also through preatal care providers, hospitals, ad birthig ceters. Durig wome s pregacies, study researchers will collect iformatio regardig diet, exposures, eviromet, ad stress. From the first trimester of pregacy through the child s 21st year of life, researchers will coduct at least 15 i-perso visits, icludig home visits, visits i cliical settigs, ad oe visit where the child is delivered. Evirometal samples such as air, water, food, dust, ad soil will be collected at home visits, ad researchers will also collect iformatio via telephoe ad mail-i questioaires. Biological samples will iclude hair, urie, blood, saliva, ad ail clippigs, as well as cord blood ad placetal tissue 2

3 collected at the time of delivery. Mothers will provide breast milk samples, ad biological fathers who accept ivitatios to participate will provide seme samples. I additio, the study will iclude a pre-pregacy cohort of wome determied to be at high probability of pregacy. Biological ad evirometal samples will also be collected from these wome. Catherie Karr (director), Nacy Beaudet, Rebecca Birdsog, ad Sheela Sathyaarayaa accepted the award o behalf of the Northwest PEHSU. The uit, located i our Occupatioal ad Evirometal Medicie Cliic at Harborview, provides professioal advice to the health care commuity ad parets o evirometal agets of cocer, such as lead, mercury, ad pesticides. It also offers a wide variety of traiig opportuities for public health professioals ad commuities. It s orgaizatios like the Northwest PEHSU ad the parterships created by them that provide meaigful educatio to the public ad health care professioals about harmful evirometal exposures, said Eli Miller, EPA Regio 10 Admiistrator. I 1908, the Childre s Orthopedic Hospital Associatio opeed Fresh Air House o top of Quee Ae Hill at 114 Crockett Street. I 1974, the hospital formalized its coectio with research facilities at the UW Medical Ceter, ad has sice become the primary teachig ad research facility for UW pediatric medicie. It serves the sigle largest geographic regio of ay childre s hospital i the US: Washigto, Alaska, Motaa, ad Idaho, ad cosistetly raks as oe of the best childre s hospitals i the coutry. Feske, who is our departmet s associate chair ad director of the Pacific Northwest Agricultural Safety ad Health (PNASH) ceter, was recogized by the Natioal Istitute for Occupatioal Safety ad Health (NIOSH) ad the Iteratioal Society of Exposure Aalysis (ISEA) for his cotributios to the assessmet ad mitigatio of huma exposure to chemical hazards. It is uusual ad a very pleasat surprise to wi major awards i two disciplies, but it is a testimoy to the iterdiscipliary ature of the research i our departmet, Feske said. I share these awards with the exceptioal studets ad staff who have worked with me over the years. IOSH AWARD I September, Feske received the 2006 NIOSH Director s Award for Scietific Achievemet i Occupatioal Safety ad Health for his work with florescet tracers, a ovel techique for assessig ski exposure to hazardous chemicals amog agricultural workers. Feske developed the florescet tracer techique for his doctoral dissertatio ad has bee refiig the measuremet method sice the. His team at PNASH applied the techique to a trai-the-traier educatioal program. The ceter has published a pesticide safety traiig maual, usig the fluorescet tracer method (available i Eglish ad Spaish at Whe my colleagues ad I first used the fluorescet tracer techique for our pesticide exposure research i the early 1980s, we quickly came to appreciate its potetial as a traiig tool, said Feske. Seeig the fluorescet tracer glowig o their ski ad clothes made a immediate impact o the pesticide hadlers i our studies ad provided them with a better uderstadig of how cotamiatio had occurred. We are pleased to recogize Dr. Feske s leadership i this groudbreakig research with importat practical applicatios, said Dr. Joh Howard, NIOSH director. It is particularly oteworthy that this techique offers a powerful tool for practitioers i reducig the risk of occupatioal illesses amog Hispaic workers. Wesolowski Award for sustaied ad outstadig cotributios to the kowledge ad practice of huma exposure assessmet. Feske s pleary speech at the 17th Aual ISEA Coferece was titled, For Good Measure: Origis ad Prospects of Exposure Sciece. Because occupatioal exposures are ofte higher tha evirometal oes, may of the measurig techiques were pioeered by idustrial hygieists i the workplace, ad the adapted for evirometal exposures. I his address to ISEA, Feske called for a reframig of exposure sciece to merge occupatioal ad commuity exposure approaches. The Idustrial Hygiee program i our departmet recetly chaged its ame to Exposure Scieces to ackowledge this tred. Feske ad his colleagues at the PNASH Ceter pioeered measuremets for childre s exposure to pesticides. Their methods for measurig orgaophosphate pesticides i house dust ad pesticide metabolites i the urie of childre have bee used by other laboratories ad have bee a model for researchers at Uiversity of Califoria, Berkeley; Orego Health ad Scieces Uiversity; Wake Forest Uiversity; Rutgers Uiversity; ad NIOSH. Meawhile, Professor Richard Feske ad Adjuct Assistat Professor Catherie Karr are part of UW s Climate Chage ad Huma Health Impact Team (CHIT). This collaboratio grew out of the Goveror s Climate Challege (Executive Order 70-02) ad the Legislature s House Bill 1303, plus efforts by the state Departmet of Health. Karr, director of our Pediatric Evirometal Health Specialty Uit (PEHSU), is leadig the air quality sectio of the study, reviewig existig data ad data gaps to characterize the potetial effects of climate chage scearios o the state s air quality ad its effect o cardiopulmoary health. Feske is cochairig the heat/thermal stress study with Roger Roseblatt, UW Family Medicie. Before joiig our departmet, Ruio was director of idustrial hygiee for the Seattle ad Portlad offices of Clayto Group Services, where she metored dozes of begiig professioals. She is the eighth wier of this award from our departmet. Research Scietist Tim Gould has bee appoited to the Puget Soud Clea Air Agecy s Advisory Coucil as a at-large member. He has worked for our Northwest Ceter for Particulate Air Pollutio ad Health ad the Northlake cotrolled exposure lab. UW School of Public Health ad Commuity Medicie preseted its first Commuity Service Award for Commuity Parters to Ofelio Borges ad Flor Servi. They are pesticide educators from the Washigto State Departmet of Agri-culture ad parters of our Pacific Northwest Agricultural Safety ad Health Ceter. Professor Joh Kissel is part of a Natioal Istitute for Occupatioal ad Safety ad Health (NIOSH) grat with Professor Gerald Kastig of the Uiversity of Ciciati College of Pharmacy. The Kissel lab will be developig a theoretical descriptio of chemical decotamiatio of ski i the cotext of a larger project that describes dermal absorptio usig first priciples ad laboratory data. Associate Professor Matthew Kiefer s El Proyecto Bieestar (well-beig project) received a Commuity Actio for a Reewed Eviromet (CARE) award from the Evirometal Protectio Agecy (EPA) ad is uder cosideratio for a commuicatios award from the Robert W. Johso Foudatio. Professor David Eato received a Puget Soud Parters for Global Health Pilot Grat.
