1 740 7 th Ave. West Durand, WI MAY 2017 ISSUE THE FINAL FIVE By Arnie Humphrey We ve a mini golf course, Set up in our dining room. One more way to take a licking By Mr. Swain I would assume. Always chasing rainbows, Till he finds a way to win. One more utter failure Then it s something else again. I considered it an honor, Being in the final five. Not placing number one, But simply being there to strive. I bounced it off the bunker, And I guess that s not the goal. But there was self-satisfaction, After that final roll. I never got a hole in one, But at least I tried. When it came to effort, I wouldn t be denied. With five of us competing, I guess I made the final five. And tomorrow s another day, One more chance to survive. 4 What Every Woman Should Know... Social Security plays an especially important role in providing economic security for women. Nearly 55 percent of the people receiving Social Security benefits are women. In the 21st century, more women work, pay Social Security taxes, and earn credit toward monthly retirement income than at any other time in our nation s history. Women face greater economic challenges in retirement. First, women tend to live longer than men. A woman who is 65 years old today can expect to live, on average, until about 87, while a 65-year-old man can expect to live, on average, until about 84. Second, women often have lower lifetime earnings than men. And, third, women may reach retirement with smaller pensions and other assets than men. Social Security provides an inflation-protected benefit that lasts as long as you live. Social Security benefits are based on how long you ve worked, how much you ve earned, and when you start taking benefits. You can outlive your savings and investments, but you can never outlive your Social Security benefit. Social Security is the foundation for a secure retirement, but on average, only replaces about 40 percent of pre-retirement earnings. To have a comfortable retirement, you will also need other income like pensions, savings, and investments. Today, women have challenging choices to make. Some may spend their entire adulthood in a career or job outside the home. Some may work for a few years, leave the labor force to raise children, and eventually return to work. Others may choose not to work outside the home. Whether they work, have worked, or have never worked, women must understand how Social Security can help them and their families. Women tend to care for many people spouses, children, and parents. And, although they ve made significant strides, women are more likely to earn less during their lifetimes than men. They re less often covered by private retirement plans and more dependent on Social Security, and for a longer period-oftime since, on average, women live about five years longer than men. Social Security offers a basic level of protection to all women covered by this program. When women work, they pay taxes into the Social Security system, providing for their own benefits. In addition, their spouses earnings can give them Social Security coverage as well. Women who don t work are often covered through their spouses work and can receive benefits when they retire, become disabled, or die. Over the years, the level of Social Security protection for women has been strengthened. For example, the amount of benefits for a surviving spouse was raised, and benefits for disabled spouses also increased. Economic protection for divorced women improved with the removal of the requirement that the divorced wife be dependent on her spouse. Also, the number of years the couple must be married for the divorced spouse to qualify for benefits decreased. In addition to understanding the benefits to which they may be entitled, women also need to be aware of other aspects of the Social Security program. They need to know about providing Social Security coverage for anyone they may hire as a household worker or childcare provider. And, they need to know some basics, such as what to do if they change their names. Social Security is a vital program, especially for women, but it was never intended to cover all of their financial needs. To live comfortably, everyone needs to plan accordingly. Living within one s means and saving for the future are big parts of that plan.

7 GOLDEN AGE NEWS Page 7 CAREGIVERS HAVE RIGHTS, TOO! It happens gradually. She needs a li le help balancing the checkbook. There are other bills on the counter not ge ng paid. The layer of ice on roads and sidewalks leaves you nervous about a fall so you stop for her groceries and accompany her to appointments. You no ce that her floors are dirty and there is a laundry basket of clothes wai ng to be washed. You do more and more for her and soon find yourself making daily phone calls or visits to help. You have become a caregiver. Your mother could not live at home alone without your help. The next things you no ce involve your own life when is the last me I had lunch with my friends? When did I start ea ng fast food so o en? I used to love going for walks, but how long has it been? And why do I feel so grumpy, angry and frustrated? The answers are enmeshed with your new job that you didn t realize you had. Caregiving is like another job. You choose to do it and truly want to do it. But when you put your own life and needs on the backburner, you can run into trouble. Caregiving can consume your me, thoughts and energy and it can chip away at your physical and emo onal health. But don t dismay, you can be a healthy caregiver! You have rights as a caregiver and following these rights will keep you healthy and help you give be er care to your loved one, too. For all you caregivers out there, please read and follow these rights. You have the right to: Take care of yourself without any feelings of guilt. By maintaining your own health, you will be happier, healthier and a be er caregiver for your loved one! Con nue having a life of your own one that does not include your role as a caregiver. Make it a priority to keep doing the things you love, knowing that you are also doing all you can for your loved one. Feel and express the strong emo ons that caregiving produces. It is normal to feel anger, fear, loss and depression. Acknowledge these feelings and find someone to talk to about them. Refuse feelings of guilt that may be put upon you by your loved one or others. Do not allow yourself to be manipulated by guilt or other nega ve feelings. Accept the posi ve feelings - apprecia on, love, forgiveness, gra tude bestowed on you by your loved one and others who see your difficult task. Caregiving is hard work and you should feel happy and proud to be a caregiver. Seek help from others, whether from friends and rela ves or paid help. No one can do it all. Accept help to maintain your own life and individuality. You will need this life to return to when your days of being a caregiver ends. If you need help finding resources for home care services, support groups or other caregiving issues, please call the Pepin County Aging Unit at ext 115. I am writing this in April, the day after our big fundraiser, the John Harmon Chicken Dinner. Again our community has pulled through for us. Thank you seems a small thing to say but we sure appreciate each and everyone of you. We thank the people who donate, our volunteers and those of you that bought a ticket. Again a reminder that this facility is here for you to use it. It can be rented for your meetings, parties or family get togethers. Please call to reserve your date. Tuesday AM coffee has gotten popular. Come have coffee with Kathy every Tuesday morning at 9:30 am. Sometimes we are gifted with guitar music. We often follow the coffee with a game of Farkel. Check with us to see what activities are going on. There is always a puzzle to put together. May s council meeting is in Pepin and you are invited. Bring a dish to pass for lunch and have a chance to win a prize on May 22nd. We would appreciate your input. 10 Hospice Care Submitted by Judy Norrish Hospice is a program of care and support for people who are terminally ill. Here are some important facts about hospice: Hospice helps people who are terminally ill live comfortably. Hospice isn t only for people with cancer. The focus is on comfort, not on curing an illness. A specially trained team of professionals and caregivers provide care for the whole person, including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Services typically include physical care, counseling, drugs, equipment, and supplies for the terminal illness and related conditions. Care is generally provided in the home. Family caregivers can get support. How your Medicare hospice benefit works: If you qualify for hospice care, you and your family will work with your hospice provider to set up a plan of care that meets your needs. You and your family members are the most important part of a team that may also include: Doctors Nurses or nurse practitioners Counselors Social workers Physical and occupational therapists In addition, a hospice nurse and doctor are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to give you and your family support and care when you need it. A hospice doctor is part of your medical team. You can also choose to include your regular doctor or a nurse practitioner on your medical team, as the attending medical professional who supervises your care. The hospice benefit allows you and your family to stay together in the comfort of your home, unless you need care in an inpatient facility. If your hospice provider determines that you need inpatient hospice care, your hospice provider will make the arrangements for your stay. Respite care: Speech-language pathologists Hospice aides Homemakers Volunteers If your usual caregiver (like a family member) needs a rest, you can get inpatient respite care in a Medicare-approved facility (like a hospice inpatient facility, hospital, or nursing home). Your hospice provider will arrange this for you. You can stay up to 5 days each time you get respite care. You can get respite care more than once, but it can only be provided on an occasional basis. Further information can be obtained by calling Judy Norrish at Ext PEPIN COUNTY HUMAN SERVICES Page 10

11 Dear Dorri: I ve been retired for a while and it s wonderful to have time for all of my hobbies! Although I am staying busy, I d like to find a way to give back to the community. I ve always wanted to volunteer but I don t want to be committed to a set schedule. Do you have any ideas that might work for me? Sincerely, Volunteer Vern Dear Volunteer Vern: Great question! The Volunteer Driver Program through Pepin County Human Services sounds like it would be a good option for you. The Volunteer Driver Program provides transportation to area citizens for medical appointments, shopping, employment, and personal business. As a driver, you drive your own vehicle and are reimbursed $0.5225/mile from when you leave your home, until you return home. Your schedule is very flexible and you decide when you want to drive! Drivers must have and maintain a good driving record, proper insurance coverage, and good physical health. A background check is required prior to volunteering. Drivers will receive an initial orientation and then annual training occurs each year thereafter. To find out more about the Volunteer Driver Program, please call 715/ Do you have a question for Dear Dorri? If so, submit it to or kjesse@co.pepin.wi.us. Bob Hope s Funny Quotes: On golf: Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees. On never winning an Oscar: Welcome to the Academy Awards, or as it s called at my home, Passover. On giving up his early career, boxing: I ruined my hands in the ring. The referee kept stepping on them. On going to Heaven: I ve done benefits for ALL religions. I d hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality. On turning 70: I still chase women, but only downhill. On turning 80: That s the time of your life when even your birthday suit needs pressing. On turning 90: You know you re getting old when the candles cost more than the cake. On turning 100: I don t feel old. In fact, I don t feel anything until noon. Then it s time for my nap. Submitted by Judy Norrish What is the Difference Between Medicare and Medicaid? Medicare Medicare is an insurance program. Medical bills are paid from trust funds which those covered have paid into. It serves people over 65 primarily, whatever their income; and serves younger disabled people and dialysis patients. Patients pay part of costs through deductibles for hospital and other costs. Small monthly premiums are required for non-hospital coverage. Medicare is a federal program. It is basically the same everywhere in the United States and is run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an agency of the federal government. Medicaid Medicaid is an assistance program. It serves low-income people of every age. Patients usually pay no part of costs for covered medical expenses. A small co-payment is sometimes required. Medicaid is a federal-state program. It varies from state to state. It is run by state and local governments within federal guidelines. GOLDEN AGE NEWS May Page 11
