8 Getting started with Kaiser Permanente medical Your health is our priority, and we want to make it easy for you to get the care you need. If you are a new member, check out kp.org/newmember. We ve gathered the information you need to get up to speed in one convenient place online. Or use these tips to help you get started: SELECT A MEDICAL OFFICE AND A PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER Choose from more than 400 primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners located in 34 medical offices across the region. For help locating a facility, see pages 10 and 11. Feel free to visit one or more medical offices to see which you prefer. You can also view the profiles of our highly skilled primary care providers at kp.org/chooseyourdoctor. To select your primary care provider, call Membership Services. If you are registered for My Health Manager on kp.org, you may select your primary care provider online. REGISTER AT KP.ORG Register for My Health Manager to take advantage of features that save you time and money. You ll enjoy around-the-clock, secure access to care. At kp.org, you can make appointments, view test results, and securely exchange messages with your care team. Signing up is easy and secure. Go to kp.org/registernow. TRANSFER YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS AND PRESCRIPTIONS Transferring your medical records from your previous provider is easy. Just download and submit the release form at kp.org/newmember, and we will take care of the rest. You can also call or Membership Services for a form. If you have prescriptions to transfer, you ll want to fill out the transfer form at kp.org/newmember right away. Certain prescriptions require that you see a participating provider before you can receive a refill. Once you have a prescription written by a participating provider, you can order refills without standing in line at kp.org/rxrefill. Save additional time and money through our postage-paid Mail-Delivery Pharmacy, available for most prescriptions. SCHEDULE YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT Call Membership Services or your medical office to schedule your first visit. You can schedule future appointments online with around-the-clock access once you are registered at kp.org. If you don t have your identification card yet, take a copy of your enrollment form to your appointment. Congratulations becoming a new Kaiser Permanente member was that easy! 9 Getting started with Kaiser Permanente dental If your plan includes Kaiser Permanente dental, getting started is just as easy. Our dental offices are open Monday through Friday. We also offer Saturday hours at most dental offices for hygienist services and emergencies. SELECT THE RIGHT DENTIST FOR YOU Our online dental directory lets you view biographies and video profiles of our more than 100 dentists and specialists throughout the area. Visit kp.org/dental/nw/directory to search by area, location, provider, or specialist. YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT To make an appointment, please call our Appointment Center at For TTY, call 711. For language interpretation services, call When you call, let the member assistant know what type of appointment you need, and please have your member ID card handy. If you need routine dental care, your appointment will usually happen within four to six weeks of your request. As a new patient, your first visit will include: Diagnostic X-rays. Gum disease test and tooth decay assessment. Head and neck cancer screening and blood pressure check. Assessment of tobacco use. After your exam, your dentist will discuss the findings with you and ask about your medical and dental history. He or she will talk with you about any treatment you may need and plan a routine cleaning schedule. For children, we recommend a visit after the first teeth come in. URGENT AND EMERGENCY CARE Urgent conditions include toothaches, broken fillings, chipped teeth, and swelling around a tooth. If you need urgent care, please call the Appointment Center. Emergency dental conditions include severe swelling or infection, severe traumatic injury to teeth, bleeding that doesn t stop, and extreme pain. If you need emergency care, please call the Appointment Center anytime, any day. WHEN YOU RE AWAY FROM HOME If you have a dental emergency outside our service area, you may go to the nearest dental office. You have limited coverage for out-of-area emergency care if your condition meets the emergency criteria above. GOOD HEALTH BEGINS WITH YOUR SMILE We believe your oral health and the health of your whole body are closely connected. That s why our Dental Care Program focuses on oral health and its relationship to overall health to keep you healthy, happy, and smiling! And our members agree in a 2012 Press Ganey survey, 95 percent of our members said they would refer a friend or family member to Kaiser Permanente dental. 9
