It has 275 In-patient beds and provides a wide range of Out-patient services and a Community outreach program for catchment population of over 800,000 in the greater Meru North district area. According to CHAK, mission health facilities provide over 40% of medical care in Kenya. Mission hospitals operate with no Government funding except where there are seconded Doctors. However, MMH has a very high standing as a teaching hospital for both registered nurses and other medical staff. This has now been recognised by the Kenyan Government who now pays for 8 Medical Interns to be trained at this Centre of Excellence after many years of struggle to qualify as an intern training centre by training specialist Doctors (consultants) we are so thankful to the world church office (WCO) for establishing an endowment fund to train the doctors after they have served for 3 years in the hospital. This has Maua Methodist Hospital Savings and Credit Cooperative Society held its 18 th Annual General Meeting on 31/3/ members attended. SACCO ANNUAL MEETING In This issue Maua Methodist Hospital really helped the hospital to retain the doctors On Thursday 24 th Kenya Medical Practitioners and dentist Board Internship assessment committee visited the hospital and assessed the internship training and the team expressed satisfaction with the quality of intern training and hinted that 8 more will be placed in the hospital in the year The pioneer group of 4 interns completed their 12 months training this weekend. The new group of 8 interns may report to the hospital any time. On 30 th March, 2012 the hospital hosted a fair well party for the first group of medical intern Doctors who have successfully completed 12 months training. Being the pioneer group in the hospital, the hospital was pleased that they were patient as we implemented the new program. The doctors appreciated the support they had received from the trainers and hospital staff which contributed to their successful completion. Members adopted the amended by laws and replaced long serving board member (17yrs) who had worked in the hospital but retired from the hospital last year, See SACCO on Page 3 Pioneer Doctors...Pg. 1 Clinic at Kinanduba..Pg. 2 Nursing Department Pg. 3 ECD School Pg.4 SACCO Meeting... 2 MAUA METHODIST HOSPITAL COMMUNITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT OPEN S A MOBILE OUTREACH CLINIC AT KINANDUBA METHODIST CHURCH (JACOBS WELL) --- Evangelist John, founded the church at Kinanduba in February during the visit to the community of Kinanduba he found a community that had not been evangelized and were eager to start a congregation. A few members began to meet under the tree near a well where rogue buffalo had attacked a pregnant mother. Since the church began here at the well, it was nicknamed Jacobs well! Our vision for this community is to establish a mission School that will provide basic education for the very young children in the community, provide primary health care services to the population, and an agriculture demonstration area on the church grounds. All of this is supporting a vibrant congregation and will provide the spiritual nourishment to the members. We plan to empower the community by equipping their own resource persons -Community Health Workers that will be trained to provide on site first aid care. They will be equipped with a mobile phone to contact the hospital or community health department contact person for quick response to their health need. Currently the outreach clinic is held once per month but as the time goes, the community will require a dispensary which will provide both preventive and curative services 7 days per week with residential service providers. We will provide updates on this exciting outreach from the Hospital in following newsletters Jacobs Well where the church began in February of 2011 Prevention of malaria is key to the health of this community The community appreciated the hospital and church for bringing the medical clinic to this very remote area. 4 MAKING RE USABLE SANITARY PADS FOR THE ORPHANED GIRLS IN MAUA COMMUNITY Our Peace Corps volunteer Jill pottratraz trained girls on how to make re usable pads, 14 girls (TOTS) were trained on making reusable sanitary pads. The girls will train other peers. The training was facilitated by Jill an American Peace corp.providing re usable sanitary pads to orphan girls in the program. The biggest problem that faces orphan girls in Meru north District and poor girls is access to safe and clean sanitary towels, by providing these girls with re usable pads they will be able to stay in school. Orphans girls lacking pads fear to go to school because they don t want to be seen with cloths soiled and be embarrassed, instead they choose to stay at home when other children are learning until the periods are over- their guardians cannot afford to buy them sanitary pads when they have the monthly periods. We appeal to partners to support this initiative with cash or in kind to continue making these re usable pads for more orphans and other girls who continue to miss classes because there is nothing they can do. Reusable sanitary pads that the orphans have been trained to make. Trained girls holding a workshop for others TOTS demonstrate completed sanitary pads ECD PROJECT - A NEW SCHOOL Maua Methodist Hospital ECD project was started in Food and Nutrition Children were provided with 2010 with funding from USAID through partnership with porridge at 10 and lunch at 1pm. 5 ACHIEVEMENT The ECD project was designed to promote, provide and support quality, sustainable and holistic early childhood development for the orphaned children aged 3 years 7 years in Athiru Gaiti. This was to be achieved by providing access to quality training in ECD for teachers and care givers and also ensuring nutritional needs of children are met. Throughout the program we have achieved: 76 Children have graduated to class 1 and 90 are already at the centre GRACE Africa bought 20 milk goats for guardians as a sustainability purpose in their working group. Forma on of youth groups has helped crea ng awareness on HIV/AIDs in the community Health and Hygiene as been improved in the family level where the program supported Forma on of cell groups between guardians and orphans. This has helped the beneficiaries in sharing their daily experiences and the challenges that they face in taking care of the OVCs and the possible solu ons on the same. The cell groups are also taking a very vital role in having inter-home visits where they are helping each other in domes c cores i.e. lling of land, water and firewood fetching among other du es. CHALLENGES Long distances when carrying out home visits and while making field visits. Though we have to walk, it has taken us a longer period than expected to finish the exercise as expected. The community members has High interest and desire requesting for increased number of OVC recruitment into the program hence having difficult times in convincing them on program limitation. High expectation from the guardians The guardians expect much more support at the family level other than the current support from the program e.g. shelter, food and clothing considering their needs. Illiteracy and lack of information and communication in the community Lack of enough resources to feed the children at the ECD centre DEDICATION AND NAMING OF CLARK MCK ATHIRU GAITI PRE- SCHOOL Ed Clark arrived in Kenya on April 13 th, 2012 from US to attend a very special event on Saturday 14, 2012 in which the Methodist Church in Kenya, Athiru Gaiti Methodist church officially named the pre- school after Ed Clark. The church honored Mr Clark for his love to the orphans, vulnerable children and long term kind support for the school operations. Last year, the ECD program that was began 2010 in partnership with grace Africa NGO, funding was coming to an end by September 30 th, The Germantown mission team responded by providing initial CLARK MCK ATHIRU GAITI ECD PRE-SCHOOL financial support to continue the school running. After this, the school continued to support the salary of the teachers and providing the basic early childhood development education to 120 children and all the activities as outlined above. The Hospital management, the Church and the Community had good reason to sing and dance, during a very colorful celebration in which the ECD Pre- school was officially named: MR.
