1 2016 ACHNE/APHN Joint Conference June 2-4, 2016 Hyatt Regency Indianapolis Indianapolis, IN Public Health Nursing: Key to Our Nation s Health

2 Message from the ACHNE/APHN Presidents and Program Committee Co-Chairs On behalf of the board of directors of the Association of Community Health Nursing Educators (ACHNE) and the Association of Public Health Nurses (APHN) and the Joint Program planning committee, welcome to the 2016 Joint Conference of ACHNE and APHN. The theme of the conference is Public Health Nursing: Key to Our Nation s Health. Focusing on the theme and the conference objectives, presentations will include approaches for integrating into our education and practice; research, practice-based evidence, cost effective strategies, social justice, leadership, professional development and policy. We will hear from two national speakers who will expand our knowledge about key directions for public health and nursing that are designed to improve our nation s health. The opening speaker, Jeanne Ayers, BSN, MPH, assistant commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Health, will discuss the efforts around health equity as a key to the nation s future health. Our closing speaker, Kaye Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN, CEO of the Public Health Accreditation Board, Washington, DC, will share national strategies and challenges for improving population health. Both of the concepts presented by these nationally renowned speakers represent new and renewed directions for public health nursing. The joint conference opens with a practice and education integrated pre-conference. Featured presentations will be on how to build evidence for public health nursing practice. The pre-conference presenters have successfully engaged in public health practice-based projects and in research. The plenary session on Friday will expand on the topic of the keynote and will offer attendees the opportunity to participate in activities and discussions about integration of the concept of health equity into our practice and curricula. There will be two exciting symposia, the first emphasizing writing for publication, and the second emphasizing the role of public health and nursing in building a culture of health. Many podium presentations and poster presentations have been selected to help public health nurses in practice and in academia recognize the importance of the conference objectives and how we can share in meeting these objectives. Of course, there are many opportunities for sharing, socializing, and renewal. Two events for socializing are the walk/run with the incoming president of ACHNE and the popular event held last year, a social outing with old and new friends while enjoying the culinary delights of Indianapolis at the Friday Night Meet, Greet and Eat event. Please remember to attend the awards luncheon on Friday to help us celebrate those being honored this year. Also enjoy breakfast, breaks, and lunches and share with others your thoughts about the presentations and events. We hope you will enjoy, learn something new, share your expertise, relax, make new friends and renew friendships at the joint annual conference this year. Nurse-Family Partnership at Goodwill Industries 5901 Lakeside Blvd. Indianapolis, IN Phone: lcrane@goodwillindy.org Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is an evidence-based, community health program that serves low-income women pregnant with their first child. Each vulnerable new mom is partnered with a registered nurse early in her pregnancy and receives ongoing nurse home visits. It is a life-transforming partnership, for the mom and her child. Nurse-Family Partnership helps families - and the communities they live in - become stronger while saving money for state, local and federal governments.
