There were 18 total stations, including 5 for the HRO principles, visited by 150+ staff members. The primary objective of the fair was to increase awareness of various health topics, and empower our community (military and civilians) to take action through the utilization of preventive screenings for health and wellness. Those who came out to the showcase received free health screenings for tobacco cessation, glucose levels, and received tools and resources for how each person can contribute toward an error free, top quality care clinic. In the quest to eliminate preventable harm and consistently deliver outstanding care, many health care organizations seek to learn from the success of High Reliability Organizations. What sets HROs above the rest is their constant, relentless quest to improve even the smallest deficiency. There is a laser sharp focus to collectively think about, anticipate, and share concerns that could impact even the smallest deviation; as well as major issues of concern. HRO staff across all levels, regardless of their role, were invited to think of potential failures before a problem has even occurred. Additionally, the reporting of patient safety events is one of the key components in the Military Health System's effort to achieve high reliability. This helps continuously improve and provide the safest patient care possible. The reporting of events not reaching a patient (near miss events) allows the Patient Safety Program to analyze the sequence of events that may have led to errors before the patient was affected. These near miss events provide insight on how to eliminate preventable harm. Through education on quality improvement, patient safety, safety culture, and high reliability, everyone was able to learn and enjoy themselves at the same time. - HM3 Cage

2 O C T O B E R T O D E C E M B E R P A G E 2 Message from the XO Happy New Year! The holidays are history and now we look forward to There are quite a few events occurring this year that I would like to highlight. These events are both historical and traditional to Naval Health Clinic Annapolis. After almost three years of construction, the new Naval Health Clinic Annapolis is complete, move-in begins on March 22, 2017, and we expect to be open for CAPT Maryann C. Mattonen business by noon on March 28th. The facility on Hospital Point first opened Executive Officer in 1907 and originally served as a hospital. I ve been told that the maternity ward was in the space we currently call Lockwood-Heaton, the Galley was in the present Fiscal spaces, and a movie theater encompassed the PrevMed spaces. In 1979, the hospital was disestablished and converted to an out-patient facility. The size of the new facility is approximately 101,000 square feet and will offer many of the same services currently available with the addition of a Musculoskeletal Clinic and a small Dental Clinic. Moving into a new facility is exciting; however, I suspect that for some staff members who have worked at Hospital Point for a while, the change will be challenging. In May, we will celebrate the opening of the new facility with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, conduct the annual Khaki Dining Out, Command Picnic, and medically support all the activities requisite with the U.S. Naval Academy s Commissioning Week. On June 17, 2017, the Navy Hospital Corps will celebrate 119 years of service. If this year s Ball is anything like last year s Ball, it will be a fantastic celebration that I highly recommend for all to attend! The first half of the year concludes with the U.S. Naval Academy s Induction Day, otherwise known as I-Day, on June 29th. I witnessed my first I-Day last year and was thoroughly impressed by the huge amount of manpower and teamwork involved in medically and administratively processing more than 1,000 new students as they begin a six-week indoctrination period called Plebe Summer. In addition to what I ve mentioned above, we will also be holding a Change of Command Ceremony for CAPT McGinnis as he moves on to his next duty station after serving as our Commanding Officer for two years. Since this is the last article I am due to write before he moves on, I wish to publicly thank him for his wonderful leadership and mentorship. Good luck to you and your family sir! Arrivederci!

3 O C T O B E R T O D E C E M B E R P A G E HAUNTED HOSPITAL Fall is a delightful time of year steeped in tradition and family activities. There is a crispness in the air that brings with it all of your favorite fall delights. There are s mores, football, and pumpkin flavored everything, just to name a few. But most importantly, it begins the annual NHCA Halloween fundraiser. Every year the clinic hosts a haunted house fundraiser, with proceeds supporting the Command holiday party. This year was extra special, as we say goodbye to the building we ve called home since The occurrence marks the final Haunted Hospital held at the historic location as we shift to our new clinic in March The clinic at 250 Wood Road, which was visited by the Syfy show Ghost Hunters in 2012, has a history of strange occurrences and staff sightings. Just ask around, and it won t take long to find a willing orator anxious to divulge their experience of eerie happenings within our walls. On the 28th and 29th of October, 65 active duty, civilian, and family member contributors helped support one of our scariest proceedings to date. This year s theme was merely building upon the legends and lore our clinic has garnered over the years: Haunted Hospital. For two fun-filled and terrifying evenings, our volunteers used teamwork and imagination to create horrific scenes and stations in 10 different clinic locations. It will be difficult to find a better location to hold our future event, and saying goodbye to Hospital Point will not be easy. Thanks to the effort and hours by our staff, family, and friends, the 2016 Haunted Hospital fundraiser was one of the most lucrative to date. The team was able to raise an estimated $4,000 towards the Winter Masquerade Ball, solidifying its place as the principal event subsidizing the holiday party. The Hospital Point Haunted Hospital was an exceptional event to participate in, and let s hope we get the chance to come here again and share a few more frights. -HM2 Ritchey

4 O C T O B E R T O D E C E M B E R P A G E 4 CHILDREN S HOLIDAY PARTY On December 3, 2016, NHCA hosted the Children s Holiday Party in Lockwood Heaton with roughly 47 children in attendance. They enjoyed face painting, arts and craft, and wonderful games like pin the tail on the reindeer. The kids were graciously surprised by Santa himself with his little helper arriving on a fire truck with presents. Santa completed his visit by gathering the children around him and reading The Night before Christmas. Before leaving, Santa reached into his bag and handed out presents to every child in attendance. It was an incredible time to share the magic and joy of the holidays with all of the young ones in attendance. -HM3 Bumpers 2016 COMMAND HOLIDAY GALA It is that time of year when commands host their annual holiday party, and NHCA was no exception. This year s party was definitely one for the books as it was NHCA s most attended holiday party in the history of the command. The event sold out with an astounding 260 tickets dispersed. Attendees got to enjoy the beautiful environment of the Chartwell Golf and Country Club while dressed in their finest holiday gala themed attire. In the short amount of fundraising time the committee had to prepare, they managed to raise over $8,000 dollars! Events included hotdog sales, burger burns, and even a lumpia and adobo sale. This year also marked the last Haunted Hospital, which helped raise an estimated $4,000 that was put towards the holiday party. Thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts, the committee was able to give away some incredible prizes, including a television, Fitbit, Keurig coffee maker, and a multitude of gift cards. As always, child care was provided so the adults could enjoy their time. HM1 Anova would like to thank the efforts of HM2 Yi, HM2 King, HM2 Scott, HM2 Knighten, and all other committee members for their hard work and commitment to excellence. Bravo Zulu! -HM2 Schaeffer V I T A L S I G N S
