1 Your Trust, your news, your views Issue Celebrating the year in pictures Praise for Never get to Never checklist campaign Charity news PAGE 3 PAGE 5 PAGE 4 Season greeting s to all ou s member r s Celebrating the completion of our Jigsaw Building We are delighted to announce the new multi-million pound Jigsaw Building at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital has received its first patients. Funded by two Jigsaw Appeals and money from the Bournemouth Hospital Charity, as well as NHS funds, the building s ground floor houses state-of-the-art facilities for the treatment of cancer and blood disorders, while the upper floor is home to a new Women s Health Unit. Following extensive patient, public and staff feedback during the Jigsaw Building s planning process, the new building s design ensures better privacy for patients and requests from the local community, including Wi-Fi, counselling rooms, artwork and easy access to parking, have also been incorporated. One of the first patients treated in the new Jigsaw Building s Oncology and Haematology Department was Caroline Morgan. She said: I was treated on the first day of opening and you would never have known. I was really impressed with everything. I was very comfortable and relaxed and feel lucky to have this on my doorstep. Marie Miller, Cancer Care Matron, commented: The first few days have been very busy as the building is new to our staff as well as our patients. However, our staff have done a fantastic job and everything is going smoothly. We re delighted patients are now benefiting from these fantastic facilities. Patients to benefit from new vanguard collaboration A proposal for our Trust to work more closely with Poole and Dorset County hospitals in order to integrate care and improve patient experiences has been accepted by NHS England. The collaboration will see our three hospitals work together as an NHS vanguard to develop new models of care prioritising the needs of patients across Dorset. Our Chief Executive Tony Spotswood welcomed the collaboration, saying: This is a genuine opportunity to enhance and strengthen the care we provide to patients across Dorset and in West Hampshire. More information on the wider New Care Models Vanguard Programme can be found at

2 Celebrating the year: Festive best wishes from our Chairperson I always think this is a very special time of year. The festive season offers an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced in the last year, but also the successes. This edition of celebrates the successes of our staff, who are dedicated to ensuring our mission to provide patients the excellent care we would expect for our own families becomes a reality. There are many definitions of success, but doing ordinary things extraordinarily well seems to capture the essence of the challenges our staff overcome on a daily basis. Think what some of the statistics below actually mean: the Trust treated around 480,000 patients, carried out 35,000 cardiac procedures, implemented world leading scan technology, extended consultant cover at weekends, and delivered the outstanding new Jigsaw Building. In the coming weeks, whatever your circumstances, I wish you a peaceful time with your families and loved ones. If you or one of your loved ones needs to visit one of our hospitals at this time of year, please be reassured by our commitment to providing the excellent care that we would expect for our own families, that is our definition of success. 4 Charity news Light up the memory of a loved one at the Tree of Lights The Bournemouth Hospital Charity s Tree of Lights will be based at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital throughout December. Visitors can buy a light on this special Christmas tree in remembrance of a loved one for a 5 minimum donation. All proceeds will go to Bournemouth Hospital Charity and a selection of other charities chosen by Tree of Light sponsors the Boscombe and Southbourne Rotary Club. The Christmas tree s lights will be switched on during a special carol service in the Oasis Restaurant at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital at 6.30pm on Thursday 17 December. Climb every mountain Governor Keith Mitchell is celebrating his hugely successful climb of Kilimanjaro, Africa s highest mountain, to raise nearly 3,000 in funds for our Bournemouth Hospital Charity. If you are inspired to support Keith after reading this article, please donate online at: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ KeithMitchell1. Why did you decide this was the challenge for you? I try to attempt a different challenge every year and my past challenges include climbing to Everest Base Camp and Mont Blanc. Climbing Kilimanjaro was another great challenge to complete. Why did you decide to raise money for Bournemouth Hospital Charity? The charity is so important to our Trust as it funds urgently needed equipment that the NHS is unable to provide. My 92-year-old mother has had many procedures carried out at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and has always received outstanding treatment, so I have a particular interest in the elderly wards there. The money I raised will be spent there with a particular emphasis on patients with dementia. What was the most difficult part of the trek? The climb to the top was very steep with only 50% of the oxygen you would be able to breathe at sea level. What was the most enjoyable part? The most enjoyable part was to have some quality time with my youngest son Richard who went with me on the climb. What is your most memorable moment good or bad? The most memorable part has to be when we finally reached the summit and knew we had 4 Five star top prize up for grabs in Christmas raffle Tickets are now on sale for the Bournemouth Hospital Charity s annual Christmas raffle. This year s star prize is an overnight stay for two people at the Chewton Glen, a five star hotel and spa in the New Forest. Tickets cost 1 each and can be bought from the Charity Office at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. The draw will take place at the Rotary Tree of Lights Carol Service at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital on Thursday 17 December at 6.30pm. achieved our goal. The other not so pleasurable memory was getting up from the tent in the middle of the night when the temperature was -10 degrees to go to the loo in a hole in the ground! What would you say to someone considering doing a challenge like the one you have just done? Definitely go, it s a truly great experience.

5 News in Brief Care Quality Commission inspection As part of its inspection of how our Trust provides care, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) held a Bournemouth Engagement Day on Wednesday 7 October when CQC inspectors met members of the public to hear their views. The CQC s team also inspected our hospital sites. The Trust expects feedback from the CQC in the New Year and will keep members fully informed of its feedback in a special edition of. Pride of the Trust On Thursday 12 November, we celebrated the hard work of our staff at our annual Pride Awards. Our congratulations go to all nominees and winners. Praise for Never get to Never checklist campaign Patients visiting the Royal Bournemouth Hospital have praised our campaign to ensure World Health Organisation (WHO) safety checklists are used every time a surgical procedure is performed. The checklists are an additional safety protocol and form part of the Trust s Quality Improvement Programme to provide high quality care for patients. never get to never use your safety checklist Stroke Team awarded quality improvement fellowship The Royal Bournemouth Hospital Stroke Team has been accepted onto a team-based Quality Improvement Fellowship run by Health Education Wessex (HEW). The fellowship was awarded to the team following their application to implement innovative new ways of providing good nutrition to stroke patients. Nurses commended by Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing Newly appointed Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Janet Davies, praised the talent and enthusiasm of our Trust s nurses during a visit in August. Janet spent nine years as the RCN Director of Nursing before being promoted to RCN Chief Executive. She visited the Royal Bournemouth Hospital as her first public engagement, meeting nurses on our wards to find out what issues are currently of most concern for them. During her visit, Janet said: It s been so invigorating to see nurses at their best. The nurses at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital are a really talented, enthusiastic group. Their commitment, professionalism and the standard of their education shone through. Website: Tel:

You said, we did: celebrating patient engagement We really value your feedback about your experiences at our hospitals. We know every company seems to want feedback these days, but to our Trust it s far more than just a tick box exercise. Every feedback card filled in by one of our patients is monitored carefully by our Audit Department and reviewed by our Patient Engagement Team, as well as our ward sisters and matrons. James Rowden, Patient Engagement Coordinator, explains: Our patient feedback cards are offered to every patient and are collected up to four times a week from the collection boxes on our wards. When collected, they are taken to our Audit Department who type the information into our systems for analysis. Our ward sisters and matrons then review this information to see how we can address the concerns of our patients. It s the job of our team to support them. Patient feedback is something we feel very passionately about, no matter how small or large the request. This is how you said, we did was born. If you would like to make a suggestion about how we can engage with our patients more effectively, please don t hesitate to us at comments@rbch.nhs.uk or call In the meantime, we hope you enjoy reading about some of our recent actions in response to patient feedback: You said: The noise levels at night make it difficult to sleep... We did: We have advised our staff to encourage patients to use their ear plugs overnight. You said: Call bells are not always answered in a timely manner... We did: We have increased the number of health care assistants on wards during periods when patients have greater care needs. You said: Some staff lacked people skills and failed to introduce themselves... We did: We have reminded staff of the importance of introductions and good communication to help patients feel acknowledged and informed. Your governors are here to help you. If you would like to make contact with a governor, call the Governor Co-ordinator, Dily Ruffer, on or ftmembers@rbch.nhs.uk You can also visit 86
