1 Local and Training Opportunities for Trainers This quarterly publication provides details of the local and training opportunities that are on offer to trainers across NHS Wales to assist them in meeting the requirements of their trainer role. The opportunities are listed in date order within each organisation. If you have any queries regarding any of the events advertised, please contact the relevant person listed for that event. Please note that although many of the events are organised by a particular LEP, many of them are open to all trainers in Wales. Please contact the relevant organiser for further details. Participants explore signs and triggers affecting progression, learn pathways of referrals and discuss techniques of supervising trainees with a variety of support needs. Aims & Objectives: 1. Develop skills in understanding progression issues and recognition of flags related to support needs; 2. Develop skills in effective supervision of trainees; 3. Develop skills in constructing specific educational plans with reasonable identified objectives and outcomes needed for satisfactory progression; 4. Knowledge of how to support a trainee with health or disability in the workplace and how to apply reasonable adjustments; 5. Event Name and Description: Coaching Skills This is an interactive course which includes small group work for skills practice - an opportunity to practise coaching, being coached, observing and giving feedback. The course covers wide ranging application of coaching skills and is therefore of relevance to work with colleagues, patients, teams and in management and leadership roles. During the day you will cover: What coaching is (and isn t), approaches to coaching and its application in your role as mentors, colleagues and health care practitioners; the OSCAR process what it is, how to use it and using it in a healthcare setting; coaching practice, being coached, observing and giving feedback. IMPACT introduces the principles and practice of advanced acute medical care and related knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes and is endorsed by the Royal Medical Colleges of London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Society of Acute Medicine, the Resuscitation Council UK and the Intensive Care Society. The course enables trainees at advanced F2, CT1/2 level, to assess and treat acutely unwell patients and gives guidance on when to ask for help. For over a decade the IMPACT course has been preparing trainees to manage acute medical admissions. IMPACT has recently been revised and mapped to the CMT curriculum to provide a unique learning package which includes lectures, tutorials, skills-stations (central lines, Seldinger chest drain insertion and lumbar puncture) plus scenarios. The course is supported by a state of the art e-learning package including online simulation. QIST Silver IQT Workshops The Wales Deanery working in partnership with 1,000 Lives Improvement have developed a unique QI Training programme for both doctors in training and trainers, to provide high quality training in the principles of QI and access to QI training resources to support innovation and excellence in healthcare. 11 Sharing Training Excellence in Medical Education (STEME) Conference 2018 The Wales Deanery, in conjunction with Cardiff University s School of Medicine and Swansea University Medical School, is holding this event for secondary care trainers in Wales. The Theme for Day 1 will be A Changing Landscape and the theme for Day 2 will be Technological Innovation and Healthcare Education. Trainers can register for just one or both days. The event will provide delegates with the latest information and newest developments in medical education and training as well as practical ideas to improve their educational practice. The programme will consist of stimulating keynote and plenary sessions, as well as a diverse range of practical professional development workshops covering key issues in medical education and training. Date & Time Day 1: Monday, 3 rd September 2018 Day 2: Tuesday, 4 th September 2018 Cardiff City Stadium, Cardiff. The plenary sessions from this event will also be live streamed and uploaded to the Deanery s website after the event (links to be circulated at a later date). In an increasingly highly pressured and competitive NHS and higher education environment how do we ensure that our educational practice is entirely fair and equitable? What are the barriers to a fair approach and how can we be sure that unconscious factors are not affecting our decisions regarding students and trainees, colleagues, staff and patients? This is one of the best opportunities for medical, dental, and veterinary educators to come together to share good practice and the latest innovations in healthcare education and for networking, academic collaboration, and professional development. The conference will feature keynote speakers, workshops and short presentations designed to support colleagues in advancing their work as medical, dental, and veterinary educators. Keynote speaker: Professor Srikant Sarangi, Director of the Danish Institute of Humanities and Medicine (DIHM) at Aalborg University. Keynote speaker: Jennifer Jackson holds the International Studentship in the Centre for Applied Resilience and Health Studies at the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at King s College London.
